I'm glad I read your response before posting my own version of basically the same. While Stewart can play to both sides of the political spectrum (even though he clearly leans toward the left...and please don't start down that BS road of none of American politics being left...it's left from an American viewpoint), Oliver completely abandoned even the moderate right. Stewart often has guests with opposing viewpoints, and I don't recall Oliver doing that once during his fill in period. That's great for those of you who want to have a left wing circle jerk. I, on the other hand, would prefer someone who lets us laugh at all the idiocy in politics, not just one side.
"No one believes that." Bullshit. What world do you live in that any parent controls their kid to that level? Answer: You don't. And you cannot point to any parent who can "control your children adequately" to the level that they'll not be exposed to this. Kids have access at neighbors, schools, and their cell phones, and unless you're planning on homeschooling, not letting them have friends, and blocking all their solo access to the web, your definition of adequate is lacking.
And for the record, I am not interested in censoring anyone's access to information. In my "perfect world", any adult who wanted access should have it, and kids would but only with their parents consent. But, that's not realistic. So, parents are stuck with accepting that their kids are going to see this kind of stuff and talking with them about it, hopefully beforehand.
Having raised a very well adjusted kid (now an adult), I agree that teaching them right is required. The comment by mexsudo that this parent is lazy is simple speculation, or the uninformed babble of someone who's probably never been in those shoes.
I didn't suggest that it needed to be. But this ridiculous argument, often seen here, that parents can somehow magically monitor they're children 24/7 needs to DIAF. If you believe it's possible, you don't know WTF you're talking about.
I'm not interested in removing all access to this sort of material, but would very much be interested if there was a way to limit access to adults. But then, I don't believe that's a possibility either.
I'm speaking as an "empty-nester", but parents are rightfully concerned with things like this, and there's no simple solution, or even a difficult one. So, you're stuck with teaching your kid, monitoring what you can, and explaining this crap when they come across it at some neighbors house, or a friends cell phone.
Typical whiner. It was a for profit product. If it had been selling in your country, it probably would have been available with the data there as well. But go ahead and pile on because you got something for free that doesn't have everything you wanted.
It's not up to Google to do your bidding, or even spend $.01, much less.001% of revenue on you or your ilk. They're a business, and it's businesses job to make money, not to cater to some whiny jackass.
"Do you have kids? I do. I trust them and teach them right and wrong etc but don't watch them 24/7 and am not keen on young kids coming across violent hateful crap online"
So you think it is OK to let your kids cruise the web however the want... because you are lazy? Take some personal responsibility and raise your kids like you Know you should
By your answer, I'd bet money you've never raised a kid. What you're asking for is an impossibility in the current environment. If it's on the web, a kid will get to it. Maybe not at home, but at the neighbors, school, or some buddies cell phone. You seriously think you can limit their access these days? Get real.
The statement that "suicide is illegal because it is of no benefit to the state" implies that some conspiracy of the state has created the anti-suicide laws. This is patently false.
I am sick of idiots who think they have a right to interfere in the lives of others.
Of course the US is full of such idiots, and I am most of the time embarrassed that I share a country with such scum.
I'm sick of idiots who think that only their opinions matter. I'm embarrassed to share the same country with such intolerance.
As for interference in the lives of others, and this is just my $.02, I'll agree up to the point where it interferes with someone else's rights (take your suicide off my lawn punk). Or, possibly is attempting to assist the suicide of someone in order to collect their insurance, inheritance, etc. As long as proper controls and safeguards get implemented...have a Kevorkian day!
What you have is an anecdote. Do you presume that the rights of individuals to take their own lives should be limited because of the case you've cited? Should others have to live in misery? While I'm sorry for your loss, you can't project it on everyone else's situation.
1. This shit really stinks, like burning old clothes which were stored in an attic for decades
Really? I have heard people complain about cigarette, or worse pipe tobacco/cigar, smoke; but not marijuana. If it is grown properly, it usually has a sweet citrus smell.
Yes, it does stink, as do cigarettes. It wasn't a comparison. I was stuck living in a room with a frequent user who thought he could cover up the smell...idiot.
2. People who are high usually listen to loud music, and it's annoying
Are you sure it's not people who listen to loud music that often tend to smoke marijuana?
Yes, and while I occasionally enjoy loud music, the roommate mentioned above played Meatloaf "Bat Out of Hell" about fifteen times a day at max volume. It was the late 70s, and he ruined a perfectly good album for me.
3. We can only produce a limited quantity of snacks
I believe poptarts are a renewable resource.
Possibly, but if that drives the price up due to increased demand, I'm gonna have to hurt someone.
As someone who did take an oath, I understand your point of view. I also understand that human nature being what it is, you'll always have sheep on the sidelines who will always be passive no matter what the threat.
I guess I missed the civics lesson where we covered that every citizen is responsible. Where does that come into play? I know the military, and many political offices require an oath to that ideal, but ordinary citizens have a responsibility? Kinda reminds me of "original sin"...you're born with it.

Parents don't control their children's access 24/7. Never have, never will. If you believe a parent can do so, you're living in a fantasyland.
Which is why you teach your kids not to go seaching for stuff they really shouldn't be viewing.
Yeah, that works...fucking get a clue.
Male or female connector?

Mine in VA shows up shifted about 3-4 ft. away from the street, and overlapping the neighbor (opposite side) by a similar amount.

Please back up your tin-foil hat argument.

So, define person. http://hardware.slashdot.org/s...
Ugh, did you really have to whine about what is a perfectly acceptable slang word?
Um, addicted? No.
Awaiting the inevitable comparison between this science and AGW.
I also understand that human nature being what it is, you'll always have sheep on the sidelines who will always be passive no matter what the threat.
Yep. Responsibility doesn't imply action.
Yes, but it does imply duty, and that's the point of my argument. I see it as the duty of every citizen.
As someone who did take an oath, I understand your point of view. I also understand that human nature being what it is, you'll always have sheep on the sidelines who will always be passive no matter what the threat.
You appear to have completely misunderstood my statement and question. So let me try to clarify it.
Where is it indicated that every citizen is "responsible" for upholding the Constitution?
I in no way stated that MLK or anyone else has the power to interpret the Constitution, but we can discuss that as well if you like.
I guess I missed the civics lesson where we covered that every citizen is responsible. Where does that come into play? I know the military, and many political offices require an oath to that ideal, but ordinary citizens have a responsibility? Kinda reminds me of "original sin"...you're born with it.
The phrase is ambiguous. But if you learn a little history, you'd know that the framers didn't mean what you think.
