The reasons private schools are better is that the parents who put their kids into private schools tend to care more about their kid's education. The problem with education in the US isn't religion or lousy teachers, it's incompetent boobs raising children.
Well, if it's taught *correctly*, it'd be a good thing:) If a *science* teacher does his/her job of explaining what defines a scientific theory, it should be blindingly obvious (to someone that isn't bornagain) that ID isn't science. The most important thing you can teach a kid is critical thinking.
Why would you have a checkbox for stockholders? People buy stock to make money, and buying politicians is the most cost-effective way of making money there is. The people who run corporations are ethically obligated to influence politicians.
Analog and Asimov's science fiction magazines are the same way; just a page or two of ads and a page or two of classified ads. It's been a while since I've read one, but I imagine Ellery Queen's Mystery magazine and other literary magazines are the same way. And what ads they do have are relevant, i.e. for books of that genre.
Easy. You prove that you destroy them by having weapons inspectors witness the destruction. Seriously, how stupid did he have to be to destroy them without having it witnessed properly?
You do know, don't you, that nations that "donate" peacekeepers to the UN get a per diem for each one, and that countries like Bangladesh make quite a bit of money on the deal. Why do you think so many peacekeepers come from impoverished countries? A lot of countries fund significant parts of their military budgets by providing peacekeepers to the UN. Plus, they get to meet new people in strange countries and rape them.
I've read somewhere that if one happened less that 6000 light years away, we're screwed. The half of the planet within line of sight of the event would be sterilized and the ozone on that half would disappear. Over the next few days the ozone left would disperse evenly, so whoever lived would have half the ozone layer. Crop loss, skin cancer, environmental devastation and other hilarity would ensue.
I don't think the plan ever was to stop the plague; I got the impression that was impossible (probably would cause a time paradox). The mission was to find out the source of the virus and get a pristine sample so the people in the future could figure out how to deal with it and get back "on top". Bruce Willis failed, but they did find out where to get the stuff.
If you bother to check out snopes, you'll find that John Denver was never a sniper. He tried to enlist in the Air Force, but they wouldn't let him (he was missing a few toes from a lawn mower accident).
It does make for a compelling hoax, though. Supposedly Fred Rogers (of Mister Roger's Neighborhood) was a sniper too:)
Um, the focus of society (at least American society) isn't on amassing capital, it's on spending money on shit. Not even close to being the same thing.
I'm sure that's mighty reassuring to the poor dumb fucks in the spaceship.
No bucks, no Buck Rodgers. When the launch system is designed by Michael Brown, don't be surprised if the taxpayer says fuck it, let's just put a robot on Mars.
Seriously, even the Soviets weren't fucking stupid enough to use SRBs on manned launches. And if you know anything about history, you probably can figure out how much they figure a human life is worth. The fact that NASA was willing to do it makes me wonder if they're stupid or just plain fucking evil.
We aren't evolutionarily successful because we evolved to believe in God. It's because we evolved to furiously try to explain reality. It's just that we haven't evolved long enough to be very good at it yet.
And I'm sure there's happiness to be found in smugly believing you have all the answers and that you're going to heaven when you die. When y'all decide once and for all what the the One True Belief is, let me know. Or are you advocating self-delusion as a path to happiness? If that's the case, I can pull a Elron Hubbard.
Was mostly concerned about having a safe abort. Even if you got away with an escape tower you've still got a uncontrolled running monster outside that will probably pass you. At least with a liquid rocket you can kill the fuel pumps; any acceleration by the booster after that point will be roughly uniform in all directions.
I thought it was cancelled well before Saturn was cancelled, mostly because the military wanted to keep "shaped" nuclear device technology tightly held, far away from civilian eyes. Or at least, that's what the book I read on Orion a year or so ago said.
It wasn't the wings per se that was the problem. It was putting the wings where all sorts of crap could fall on them during launch. If it's on the top of the stack then it wouldn't be that bad. Now just get rid of the SRBs...
There is a God, and if you believe in him, you will go to hell when you die. He doesn't like it when you believe in him.
What was that about belief provably being better?
And as far as happiness/long life mapping to religion, has it occurred to you that may not be a cause/effect relationship?
Married men live longer. Does that mean marraige makes you live longer? No.
Gay men are less likely to get married and are more likely to die young (AIDS, suicide).
Men who die young are less likely to get married.
Men who have mental problems or chronic health problems are less likely to get married.
Personally, I'd rather know the *truth*, and as far as I've been able to tell, the scientific method is the only halfway reasonable way to determine it. Seriously, haven't you noticed that the vast majority of religious people are the same religion as their parents? Doesn't that smell faintly like Pavlovian conditioning?
Why do hackers always confuse Christmas and Halloween?
Because Oct 31 is the same as Dec 25

As long as they don't terraform them first, it's a good idea. They can start with Venus.

Chicago? Dead people don't surf the web.

I think it's time for you to go up to two pills a day.

The reavers had only been around for ten years (since the death of Minerva); they weren't going to survive as a culture or propagate.

You can buy both those CDs on Amazon. New. For less than $15.

You (and NASA) forgot the part about not using SRBs. Wonder if they could use hybrids and get similar performance...
Yes. That way the throwing in the kitchen sink part will be done at a national level, in multiple nations, instead of at an international level.

Mini-Orion? Don't know about that; can't see us putting a few hundred nukes into space without causing all sorts of screaming conniptions. :)
Unless you're talking about a fusion drive with lasers.
