In four or five years, saying he's the star wars kid will be a good way to start a conversation with a girl. If he can laugh about it by then. The only thing better than money is celebrity.
Yeah, I know. Compare the property tax of a 2000 square foot house on a lot with a 600 square foot apartment.
Before I bought my house, I lived in an apartment. I doubt if the 16 unit building I lived in would have appraised for more than 3x the cost of my house.
You can get into trouble for it. In Dallas about ten years ago somebody did that to Robert Tilton (a local scumbag televangelist) because Tilton had gotten a bunch of money from his mother. They started noticing a lot of hang-ups on their 1-800 number, and eventually had the cops trace the call and busted the guy. Can't remember the exact charge, but they can get you for something.
The legal exposure to doing something like this is big enough to keep it from happening. How do you think voters (and jurors) will like sharing the road with robot semi trucks?
Ivory tower academics can talk all they want, but anyone funding something like that *will* lose their shirt in a courtroom, and will probably go to jail.
Well, what would happen is that, say, Wendy's wouldn't automate for that reason. McDonalds and Burger King would, and they'd be able to lower their prices, and they'd take away business from Wendy's, forcing Wendy's to automate.
Same thing happened a while ago with full service gas stations. Used to be they'd all be full service, then they were self-service with a few full-service pumps that cost extra, now you can't find full-service pumps anymore (at least around where I live).
And as far as "a few minimum wage salaries" are concerned, I'd be willing to bet that salaries are the largest single expense for a fast food place.
Ask the people in the flyover territory if they mind that you think that way. They don't, because it keeps all the riffraff in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
I own a home, and I pay a hell of a lot more property tax than anyone living in an apartment. *Your* kids are being educated at *my* expense. The tax break I get by owning a house doesn't come close to making up the difference.
Oh, and when I get my house paid off, or paid down to the point where I can't itemize, I'll *still* be paying a hell of a lot more property tax than anyone living in an apartment, with no tax break.
And don't forget that those tax breaks make it possible for a lot of your working poor to buy houses.
My parents. Most of my aunts and uncles. I should have my house paid off in about three years; I bought it less than eight years ago.
The average apartment in the city I live costs $700 a month. My house payment is $1100; I know people that pay more than that in apartment rent. I get about $200/month cut off my taxes, and more than $300/month going into equity. And that's not counting the increase in property value, either, which is at least $100/month. So the "cost" of my house is about $500/month. And then there's the couple of years I got $400/month rent from my old roommate.
And the taxes/interest on the property you're renting? You really think the owner isn't passing those costs on to you? What, are you renting a room out of your parent's basement?
And a crackpot who *says* he would bet anyone $1000 is not the same as someone who actually *does* bet $1000.
They're even further from being communist. That's kind of the point of the thread, that communism requires a totalitarian govt.
Yeah, because in this economy of non-scarcity, I can have my fabricator make me as much gold and platinum jewelry as I want for my girlfriend.
You still need to *get* the raw materials, including energy.
Because they leave enough capitalists alone. A successful parasite doesn't kill its host.

There are two types of jobs in the world: ones where you shower before work, and ones where you shower after work.
I grew up on a pig farm. I'd much rather shower before work.
Don't know; haven't been to Vegas or Hoover Dam in over ten years.

I forgot to put in the smileys for the people on the coast. Sorry :)
Like the sig - you read the metaverse article in Scientific American a month ago?
I wonder if the name psychokillerwithnothingtoloseandwhoknowswhereyouli ve is taken.
ISPs usually keep track of who is using an IP at what time. Having a dynamic IP won't help much.

Not to mention the 20 or 30 million telephone operators we should have by now.

Hoover Dam's a pretty good tour, and it's a good excuse to spend a few days in Vegas.
What if we made Austria the 51st state? Then Arnold would have (retroactively) been born in the United States. :)

Kind of how unions usually give to Dems? :)
It's July. I live in Texas. Not an acceptable option :)
I'll give you $100 if you inject yourself with a full load of HIV virus. Should be a sweet deal for you, $100 for no risk.
So why exactly do we not have to worry about smallpox and polio anymore?
Oh wait, I guess we do, since nobody gets vaccinated for it anymore.
