You don't need anything faster than a 1GHz P3. A P2 500MHz should be more than enough to serve static web pages and run a Sendmail daemon. If you want a real server checkout eBay, you should be able to find a good deal on an IBM Netfinity or Dell PowerEdge. Since this is for a club project you may want to get a SUN server or a DEC Alpha, and run something other than Windows NT/2000. I would recommend FreeBSD 5.0. Install it without a GUI (KDE, X). A RAID is a good idea; you should also get a tape drive.
I totally agree. What does M$ know about secure computing, other than making it not secure. Lets face it they makes horrible applications and operating systems. If only everyone would switch to FreeBSD!
I think that this is too much to pay. This is a rip-off. Consider what your getting a laptop with only a 12 inch display and a VIA processor. I think that most people would be better off buying a low cost Dell or IBM laptop. I have never used Lindows, however it looks like a good version of Linux for the beginner. I do not believe that the first time linux user will want a Linux only PC. I think that a beginner would be much happier with a dual boot system. Unfortunately, M$ Window$ is still the dominate OS for the desktop. As much as I hate to admit it I am still forced to use Window$, because majority of computers run Window$; I have been using Linux and BSD for over seven years now. I think that in a couple of years Linux WILL be ready for the average novice user.
Yes, SSD disk are very reliability. This would be great for the consumer. But do the manufacturers want to make drives that are that reliable? That kind of reliability could cause sales to reduce, due to the devices longer life span. Why would anyone consider replacing a drive that has the penitential to work reliably for 20 + years, if it meet their needs. I'm still using my old 6 GB drive. I will continue to use it until it dies.
