Gotta love Peter F Hamilton. I'm not sure how widely known his name is, but he writes some truly brilliant worlds and characters (Night's Dawn Trilogy being top of my list). Also Larry Niven. The 'Known Space' series, and 'Ringworld' series (they may be the same series, it's been a while).
