  1. Kegerator and a white board on Ultimate Software Developer Setup? · · Score: 1

It sounds weird but some of the best brainstorming sessions I've had was with a few people, a bunch of beer and a giant white board. Now for even weirder preferences. Have the ability for mutliple keyboard and mice connected to one computer and use an LCD projector as the monitor. That way people can demonstrate what they are talking about quickly and take turns prototyping with peer review. The last strange preference is that I have a KVM hooked up to multiple computers, but the KVM is on the floor and I use it as a foot pedal to switch. It's really convenient.

  2. Re:Typical ignorant developer.... on Hacking Mac OS X · · Score: 2, Insightful

Fair enough...kind of. "database independent" is a dangerous term. Almost as dangerous as a senior database architect who is unfamiliar with abstraction. You can have reasonable database independence with optimizations for prevelent databases. The system can be database independent while performance isn't.

  3. Certifications to be fair on Are IT Certifications Meaningless? · · Score: 1

I used to interview incompetent individuals who pimped their certifications with nothing to back it. Oddly, I'm considering following the same path. Why? Because with the tight job market and the realities of an established workplace. There are some truly impressive developers out there, but there seems to be a lot more arrogant developers who are incompetent at their jobs. And they are judging the relevance of my experience? I'd like the option of getting a certification, instead always depending some jackass who thinks expertise in a subject involves reading half of a Software Developer article about a common sense practice and fucking it up. So yeah, I hope certifications get even more prevalent in order to lessen the dependence on years of experience and questionably skilled senior folks. I'd rather have a guy who has two years experience and a desire to learn than a guy 10 years of incompetent and unstable programming.

  4. Re:"The IT100 did it all at a cost of $1,395" on Low Powered Mini-Server for the Masses · · Score: 1

I just built a server with the Via mini-itx M10000 board, adn SuSE 9.0 Pro (512MB, Mad Dog DVD/CDR, and Seagate 80GB drive). No problems at all yet. No problems with components either as others have mentioned. I might have gotten lucky. I also haven't used the combo drive for anything other than playing CDs, but $320USD is a hell of a lot better than $1,395. Admittedly, I don't have 802.11b in it, but I'm not sure why you'd even need it. I'm not sure why there were so many returns to Newegg, but I'm very happy with it.
