    I've been using it for a few Windows things that just aren't great on a Mac, like Quicken. been using it since the public beta, bought the production copy... works fine for me.

    DUL = DailUp List... a bit of a misnomer as it commonly refers to all dynamic hosts. My spam went down dramatically after starting to use Trend's DUL (formerly MAPS). Alas, it's a pay service, but it all comes down to your pain threshold. Mine is low relative to my income.

    Really? I've been arrested, but not convicted (no, not some trivial DUI bullshit thing either). It hasn't caused me one whit of trouble in any dealings with the police that have occurred since then.

    I'd suspect that if your prior arrest was assault on a peace office or resisting arrest, then yeah, you're going to get fucked with if you have future dealings with the police. No system's perfect. Sorry.

    You can get arrested for pretty near anything. Even on "trumped up" charges. Getting convicted is another matter. If the guy in Philly has a civil case, I expect he'll press it. If he wins, it's payday.

    He's a VC. He sells you on hype. You buy the stock of the companies that he invests in early. He cashes out at or shortly after IPO. He couldn't care less what happens to you afterward.

    The only reason Vinod is interested in ethanol is because there is money to be made. For him.

    Actually, a lot of malware is already vmware-aware and avoids hosts running windows under vmware. More and more getting this functionality every day.

    All stores ask for ID? Maybe where you live. I've never been asked for ID, other than when purchasing alcohol.
    There are anonymizing services you can use if you are so paranoid about what your ISP is saving.
    All banks have been compromised? Every one of them? You've personally checked? Didn't think so.

    So again, quit whining and start solving your own problems.

    Why did they mess with a good thing? Because a few crybabies on the then-SAGE exec committee (now LOPSA board) continually blamed USENIX for their problems and kept lamenting about oh how things would be better if only they were independent. After listening to this bullshit for years, USENIX finally took them up on their offer. And when LOPSA's separation wasn't moving quickly enough, USENIX had enough and let the door hit the malcontents on the ass on their way out the door.

    LOPSA's in a world of financial hurt and continues to delude themselves into thinking that USENIX if going to hand them over a big pile of money. After all the bad blood, I doubt USENIX would piss on them if LOPSA were on fire.

    good luck finding an sole proprietor who's going to sign a contract with a non-performance penalty. There's enough work out there, that the "good ones" you refer to don't have to. So you're stuck with a mediocre consultant or no teeth for non-performance. No, it's not just about proving it to your boss. If your loss is substantial enough, it may be about proving it to your shareholders. If you drive share price down, they have this nasty habit of litigating.

    In most caes, the CEO of a large company doesn't give a rat if you have to wrestle with customer support to get results. He most likely views that activity as "doing your job".

    Look at Red Hat. Why do you think Oracle is considering doing their own distro? Not because there's gobs of money in the distro space, but because RH can't support them well enough now and they have a significant RH installed base. One large enterprise customer would kill a startup with pre & post sales support requirements alone. This is one of the many reasons that startups have problems cracking the enterprise space.

    Cisco and Juniper offer 24/7 worldwide support. Whether or not it sucks, this is the thing that keeps people cozily asleep at night, knowing that if they have a problem, they have an unchallengeable defense of having bought the best in class support solution (notice I avoid any discussion of h/w, because in the enterprise, h/w without support is worthless).

    Yes, Vyatta talks a good game, but 24/7 worldwide support isn't something you build with a few million bucks in VC funding.
