Clusters are ideal for problems that are easily parallelized (sp?) - such as the modeling of protein strucures/protein folding. As a matter of fact, most of the researchers here (UIUC) that do research in that area are using LINUX clusters. As are the people doing this with the CAVE/CUBE. So it looks like a lot of them have already made the move away from supercomputer based research and to cluster based research.
You know, I am amazed that people are so quick to bash daredevil for the weak dialogue and such, and have been unwilling to turn the same criticism on spider-man, which is much more deserving. I definitely related more to the "heart" of the daredevil portrayal than that of spiderman. Both movies had a great buildup of background story (which I hope is where the Hulk shines as well). Spiderman quickly lost that after the horrid green goblin and overly "batman and robin" type scenes with our hero. Daredevil I felt never made that bad leap, and stayed more or less dark and character focused (as superficial as it was). No to mention toby maguires constipated reaction to Ol' Ben's death - still makes me laugh. Ok, that was a bit mean:) But I hope the Hulk avoids the mistake of both of these - though I am not counting on it (better to be surprised than disappointed).
I agree - when I see Enterprise in the subject line of the TV Guide, I immediately go it it, expecting that I will be viewing a show about Star Trek. When I do open it, it is just porn (with pointed ears).

Anyone else feel that the scariest thing about last nights attack is that the last 10 minutes of Angel got preempted?
I am a biophysics grad student doing Computational Neuroscience research. Our lab uses Matlab exclusively, and so do most of our collaborators here. In this field it is considered the standard, unless you are doing large biophysically detailed neuron models, in which case you would use Neuron or Genesis or some other modeling software.
The reason Matlab is used is because most things in Computational Neuroscience are easily implemented as matrices. Specifically, inputs and outputs are generally stored as long vectors, and connection weights are stored in large matrices. Matlab is ideally suited for this, because of all the functions available specifically for dealing with matrices. Also it is very simple to manipulate them - and the syntax to do so is very simple.
I have heard that a lot of computational biology people use matlab for their modeling. Those that require speed just code in matlab and then compile it in C.

I don't know if I would be so quick to dump the envy card. I think it is a valid factor in bullying and unpopularity.
Come at it from this angle: you are an average student. During class, your teacher constanty showers praises at a particularly smart nerd. They always seem to have the right answer. They always seem to get the good grade.
You go home, and your parents berrate you for doing so poorly. While your friends may not think it is cool to do well in school, and you might agree, maybe your parents and teachers don't.
The parents thing especially might cause some resentment to build up. You decide that maybe roughing up that smart nerd will make you feel a bit better.
So we have the motivation for bullying. Unpopularity may be something related, in that bullying (verbal or physical) has a way of eating at someone's confidence. I think confidence is a large factor in someone's popularity. If others are eating away at it (for whatever reason), then of course they are going to be unpopular.
For the people that mentioned that they were smart and popular? Well, they had confidence in themselves, and probably at one time early on stood up to a particular person of average intelligence.

The cells that produce the gametes are "immortalized" cells, constantly producing telomerase (see my Anonymous post a little further up regarding immortalized cells). Because of this, there offspring (the gametes) have the proper telomere length, minus maybe one generation's length.
So the sexual reproduction iteself has really no bearing on it, though many of the early cells during development do express telomerase (otherwise you may have cells by the time that you get to your fingertips or other extremeties that are really old!:P)
Hope this give a little more clarification on why old parents don't necessarily have "old" DNA in their gametes.
