This goes along perfectly with my long running wish, half jokingly and half serious: Government by lottery. Pool us up, put us in odd numbered groups, and let the randomly selected make decisions.
Part of the issue, and I've railed on this for a long time, is that in the US there is often an illogical separation between "Business districts" and "housing districts". When I lived in japan, I could walk down to the local market that the owner lived above or behind. Here, zoning codes often preclude this. Lots of houses miles away from a clump of businesses.
normally I don't throw out the Marxist tag easily, but the "everyone should contibute to the society according to their abilities." certainly fits it. As in "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need"
Thanks for clarifying that. And, for the record, since you are part of the WE, you should improve the world by shooting yourself, thus leaving one less terrible American.
I'm surprised at how angry people got at you for this comment. I happened to have been bit, when I was 8, by an angry German Shepard two doors down from it's house, on a public street. This was circa 1978. Animal control had put the animal under "house arrest" three times already, once for attacking an animal control officer. I know my mother had to physically restrain my father from walking down the street and shooting the dog. There are times I wish he had, though it would probably have put him in jail. The owner fought to keep his kick toy( he beat the dog and was an ass) and eventually the dog died years later. I received $3000 total, medical and "pain and suffering" included, and spent years ( to this day) horribly scared of any dog larger than a chihuahua. Even though I logically know that shouldn't be the case.
shame only works if one feels shame. You can't enforce shame, and as much as you'd like to, if the other person ain't feeling it, they just ain't feeling it. When someone says "shame on you", I generally don't. It's the worst sort of motivator, really. And this has nothing to do with your argument, i'm just commenting on the shame portion.
The pastor of my school, a catholic school, would regularly expound on evolution and why it didn't need to clash with the bible, enjoyed comparing biblical passages to factual data and how they overlapped, he never taught "earth created in 6 days". We learned evolution, and used to have good debate on why people felt the need for such a divide.
I spent a few years living in Japan ( non military), specifically in Hiroshima. Due to the obvious acknowledgement of the bombing there, I did a LOT of research on the subject, talking to people when able to, reading historical accounts, etc. The answer I came out with, eventually, was that it was tragically justified as part of that war. Not sure if Nagasaki ( bomb #2) was, however.
What struck me most was how the people of that city have managed to put that behind them, move on, and actually use the experience to push for a better world. I'm not sure we'd (the US) be up to it.
Everyone's leaving out the obvious: The employees of the library are lazy. Rather than do anything, they can claim "1st Amendment", ignore everyone's complaints, and go back to reading a book in the corner. Never underestimate laziness as a motivation.
I've gotta throw this in: I'm puzzled why everyone keeps hammering you with pretty silly insults re: your supposed lack of knowledge. You seem to be honestly statinga point, presenting your problem fairly, and getting lots of people taking cheap shots at you for your request. With a few honest replies. I guess this is why people don't ask for advice on slashdot. You're likely to get fifty "you suck, you're an idiot, hire someone else, "XXXX" rules!" (where XXX is OS of choice) Every time someone makes a crack like that, I imagine an old boss of mine who loved putting everyone down. Fat, no social skills, sitting in a filthy office berating others.
or, it's like knowing A girl was picked on by a group of boys, including Jimmy. But refusing to do anything to Jimmy until we're 100% sure that all the boys have been identified...
You are absolutely right. When something bad is being done, we must not chastize anyone for doing it until, across the board, we punish all. For example, with Tax Cheats, going after the largest tax cheat would be wrong. We can only prosecute if we punish ALL cheats at the same time....
you state that as though it's common knowledge he's running around with his pants on his head. Please give us more to go on.

use of the term "exterminate" in any form other than addressing rodent infestations is a bad idea.
are you honestly equating a dead dog with a dead kid?

So yeah, i give you a thumbs up on that.

Please cite your Bigfoot sources, please. I'm curious.
You can. It's just the pyramid has to be transparent. or perhaps floating in the air, that would work too.
or....(shudder) YOU ARE THE PYRAMID!
The part you're not thinking about is the "If I see a PC component I want in a store", which you then go on to say won't exist much longer.
Did you really just say that it's the "social aspect" of sitting in front of a computer by yourself and ordering things that seals the deal?
You never explained why this would never make sense. Some people do like windows/are comfortable with it, but still like mac hardware.

I noticed you enjoy the use of exclamation points. Please stop. !

Ah, let's flip this argument. What's the center of the Christian world? Rome?
If you think both sides of the political spectrum don't go around telling everyone what they should or shouldn't do, you're pathetically naive.
Oh, wait, i read the rest of your response. I didn't even need to say this. It's painfully obvious. Nevermind.

I second the motion.
Why, oh why, would ANYONE want their Mime back?
Bravo, sir, on one of the better typos I've seen recently.
