  1. Great Idea! on All Fifty States May Face Voting Machine Lawsuit · · Score: 0, Flamebait

Awesome! Let's pretend the only solution to accountability issues in voting is to make the voting process so expensive that we can't afford to do it anymore! Way to go, America - it's nice to know that the extremists (and yes, extremists often = stupidest) are making policy once again. This is what happens when: (a) You aren't honest about the facts of the issue, in order to add weight to "your side"; and (b) You don't bother analyzing the costs/benefits and parameters of the problem before trying to solve it.

That's about "terrorists" and "foreigners" - and they are probably right, for now.

Valid and carefully measured statements about the wrongness of what our government is doing here is going to get a HELL of lot more traction, longterm, then overwrought and trumped up B.S. like this.

Well, interesting. I've got OS X running on a mac laptop right now, and I crashed it doing something pretty simple - I opened a new document in OpenOffice, and shut down X11. The Mac completely froze, with no error message - just completely non-responsive with a nice little "wait" icon for a cursor. I got online to see if I could find out how to shutdown or whatever (recover, in any way), and didn't find anything under any sensible search term ("Mac frozen", etc.) - so I hunted around until I found the menu item in the finder that allows me to "Force Close". After "Force Closing" both X11 and Open Office, the Mac started working again. No error message. No nothing explaining what happened. It just started running again. I'd consider that more cryptic then your average BSOD - and harder to fix - since a BSOD usually only requires a reboot - and it gives you instructions on what to do, if that doesn't work. Not to mention the fact that it's incredibly rare to get them anymore...

  25. Hello? Natural Selection? on Chimps Evolved More Than Humans · · Score: 3, Insightful

This should be obvious, people. The whole point of evolution is that a species changes over time to deal with pressure from its environment. Humankind has been "coddling the weak" for thousands upon thousands of years now. We protect and nurture those who would not, could not, make it on their own. This means that evolution, as it functions for say, apes, isn't working the same way for us. Our "large brains" and the technology and advantages that come from the abilities we get from it, mean that our genes do not need to change as much as most other species - because instead of changing ourselves, we develop technology, etc. to deal with our environment. Again, I'm guessing that most scientists are looking at this data and saying, "Well, no shit. I would certainly be surprised if the data showed something else, but this? It's confirmation - nothing exciting."
