I understand the scientist's difficulty with the issue. And, the blog is a funny way of approaching it. I just logged into Slashdot to make this post, and I was looking at my old comments, and it's quite telling. You can really learn a lot about me by looking at my old posts. You could probably learn more by what I am saying now, then by asking me direct questions in a polygraph test. However, the polygraph machine is a means of control. In any institution, there will be those on top making decisions and pushing the buttons. Control is inevitable. I understand his resistance to that control and am shocked if this is the first time he has felt it. I don't know how much they get paid at Los Alamos, but I imagine it's a decent salary and that they have opportunities that a lot of others would love to have. This guy has two options: Stay or quit. Stay and deal with a shitty administration that obviously doesn't care about the human behind the white coat, or quit and join a lab and do work for someone who you think cares about you. Trying to go against such a machine is not going to get you anywhere, unless you are above such things.
I sort of disagree. If 80 percent of the people are tourists, then you should cater to the tourists. I did a bit of traveling this summer, and I remember signing the visitors book a few times at the tourist centers of the states I went though. It was kind of fun to see where all the people came from. It might be interesting to have the tourists in your lab do a web page about themselves and their travels. This could be added to a main web page that lets you check out all the people who came into the lab. Digital cameras might be an option. You could teach basic HTML, or an easy editor like Frontpage.
All I can say is that good quality books can easily last hundreds of years. If you are worried about file compatibility or access to your work, then simply print it off on good acid free paper. Store it in a file cabinet and scan it back into your machine when you need it. Make a paper copy of the source code. Same thing for those JPGS, just make a nice color copy and laminate.
If you only do an hour of work-what are you doing the rest of the day. When I was in school, I had a part time job, took a full class load, and still had time for happy hour. My grades dropped from straight A's in high school to B's in college, because I was always out at the record shops, art museums, concerts, or clubs. I always managed to get my papers and projects in on time-sometimes staying up all night doing them. That's just how it is when you are in college. Now that I've been out in the real world, I have absolutely no time for anything. I work about 50-55 hours a week, and have a family. When I have projects due, it is no problem for me to sit down and do them in the evenings. As you get more responsibility and more work, you adapt to the situation. Work becomes a habit. Hopefully, a good habit. My time now is precious, so I try to get all my work done before it is due, so I have have family time or just plain down time. Enjoy yourself in college- I guarantee you will not have the time to worry about how to get the work done when you are out- You will just have to get the work done!

I bought a 92 Honda Accord from a friend, and she had installed a Blaupunkt CD stereo. The cool thing about this stereo is that it has an aux in cable that is connected to the stero and ends up in the glove box. I have a 2nd generation 10gig iPod and I connect it to the stero using this cable- and leave the iPod in the glove box playing away. There is a button on the stereo that lets you choose the source of the music, aux, cd, or stero. It's a nice set up. You might want to check out the Blaupunkts to see if they fit your needs.
I have size 11 EEE feet, so I always order my shoes by mail- there is no way the mall would have anything that would fit me. I have a pair of boots that I bought from Mason Shoes- a mail order company- that I have worn for the last 6 years. I wear them every day and the sole of the boot is guaranteed for life. I believe that I will wear out before the boots do. Mason Shoes has a great return policy if you order a shoe and it doesn't fit- just send it back-no questions or problems.
At the very worst, you could use a digital camera to take a picture of the output on the screen, plug in your camera and save it as.jpeg and email it to whoever you want to have the info.
