last I checked the sun has never failed. And it's never needed an upgrade... However to be fair, it is a power hog.

  3. They don't need anymore money. on Copy Protection - Scapegoat or Real Threat? · · Score: 1

Most bands are richer than rich, and don't need any more money. And some bands realize this are release full albums on mp3. They don't care about the money they could've received, but have no use for anyway. I respect bands like this.

Some bands still make music because they want to, because they like music. It's them I would rather support.

  4. Money's not disappearing... on Copy Protection - Scapegoat or Real Threat? · · Score: 1

The money is still being spent. People will still have to buy high bandwidth connections or computer upgrades.

Maybe the Recording Industry should start investing in these other areas if they're that greedy.

  5. Re:legislating the number on Copy Protection - Scapegoat or Real Threat? · · Score: 1

I really doubt that any other format will take off. I mean really how many other versions of DVD's are there? LD, VCD is about all I can think of. But even combined they make the slightest fraction of money compared with DVD.

Another example. jpg versus png or other picture formats. Standards are really hard to knock off. And let's face it, Mp3 is standard.

It's accepted. It's popular. And it's here for a long while.

  6. Now here's a money maker... on Copy Protection - Scapegoat or Real Threat? · · Score: 1

I just wish I could be the one to find a perfect copy protection and sell it for X dollars.

On a sidenot I consider myself an audiophile and anything above 192kbs sounds damn near CD to me. Just make sure you're not using you're cheap computer speakers. But I still buy just as much music now as I ever did. Mostly on Vinyl however.

Aw, but at least hackers had an excellent mood set to the film. And the actors didn't break in to ruin stuff, just have fun or explore. that's the true spirit of hacking, not many films got this right (see MTV True life article).

This of course assuming you don't count the FBI agent attacks which were really funny. "you wanna do what to my..."

We could do it the annoying way, and make it have to do a confirmation reply to enter successfully. Who would want to confirm x different accounts just to vote?

  10. No not... on Major Star Wars Character To Die in Next Books · · Score: 1

It's like R2-D2 dying you just don't do it. Sometimes I feel like i could take on the whole (publishing) empire myself! (I wish i was R2 so i could get chicks!)

  11. outer limits on Genetically Engineered Children · · Score: 1

i seen an outer limits on this one time. Actually it was mostly about possible side effects. The show explained that one out of every so many geneticly (sp) engineered babies would have a bad reaction to it. And turn into a powerful "freak" who looked quite ugly and was quite strong, with no thought of consequences. The best part about the show though was the ethical dilema it implied. In order to do well, you almost had to engineer your child, otherwise he wouldn't be as smart, wouldn't get as good a job etc. And if he couldn't get a good enough job, he couldn't pay for his childs engineering. And if you did 1 in 1000 would get this defect... catch 22

  12. politics online...failure. on Is The Net About to Transform Politics? · · Score: 1

I think it's just like the eCommerce thing. Everyone goes to the online world thinking of how much money they can make, when really almost everyone loses money or makes very little.

You have to be really unique to survive the web. If you open another auction website you have virtually no chance of surpassing the already established ones. Politicians have to come in with unique ideas...

  13. Bout Time! on iMac II to have LCD/Firewire/DVD/AirPort/new color · · Score: 1

Go figure. The OS i disklike creates what i've always wanted. A widescreen computer. It's about time too. just look at how much nicer widescreen tv's are compared to standard. It should be less eyestrain for all of us nutcases!

  14. what about the little guy? on More Moderation Madness · · Score: 1

What about the little guy like me, who never even has a chance for anyone to see his post? Almost the whole first page of comments come from the first 5 minutes of a posted story. Not everyone has time.

There has to be something we can do to allow everyone to get a fair chance to post, and be heard.

One idea i have is that moderators become moderators for one story. They get as many points as they need. But they should have to go through all of the comments before they get to go at it. This way they can succesfully weed out bad comments and heighten good comments without having to worry about which good comment is better that this good comment. (they're both good comments!) Although they'd have to be good moderators.

Another idea is pools. All +5 posts get onto the main "pool" (page). All +4 posts goto the next "pool" (page).

This way the best posts will get through and seen first.
