  1. Re:(Sorry I'm late...) on Girls Don't Want To Be Geeks · · Score: 1

Better late then never.. I've been too busy to post as well, and I feel a bit of guilt over it, but nothing to strong. =b

I have to agree with a lot of what you said about growing up.. toys and all. I've gone through the "girlie" phase, and the "tomboy" phase, and every other "phase" that a girl can go through.. almost as if it was expected of me.

When I finally got into computers 8years ago, it was strictly to do my job of processing court documents and writing letters to our clients. It wasn't until I met a geek that I was even introduced to the whole idea of doing something other then work with a computer. I was top of my class in math and english all through school, and I just never thought of pursuing those subects outside of the daily humdrum of school. Now, 7 years after meeting a geek, I am addicted to my computer, and people sometimes mistake me for a man if I can't prove that I am actually lacking a penis. In my circle of close friends, I know more females that are "geeks", then males. That isn't to say that I don't know more men that work in the computer field, but of the truly interesting folks, I know quite a few women who work in the computer field. What the article fails to mention, is that not every woman that is interested in the field goes to a 4yr college and gets a degree. My best friend is a great example of someone who actually fought not to be in computers, and now shes been sucked in, and is a network admin for a huge company in the silicon valley. She has no degree, she just buys books and reads, and experiments and teachs herself.

They may say that only 30% or 14% or whatever are graduating, but that doesn't mean that there aren't people out there that can handle the load of information that is required to be in the computer field.. it just means that there is a ton of us female types that don't think you have to know how to program a calculator in C++ in order to be a good programmer, or net admin, or sys admin or whatever they can forsee conquering in their futures.. me included.

  2. Re:Aesthetics, elegance, and ongoing learning on What are Your Programming Goals? · · Score: 1

Being that there is nothing else posted that truly grasps the nature of how one might feel when setting and trying to attain goals, I would have to say that this would be the main basis.

I have spent the past 6 years trying to learn how to code with some type of efficiency, and what drives me, and pushes me on, is my desire to see my own finished product, and to know that anyone can go inside of said finished product and read and understand exactly what I did to accomplish my goal for that project.

I have to agree with the overlying question though.. how do us small time, wanna-be big-time people with a head full of interest, find what we need to accomplish the things that those before us accomplished?

It's not too simple, but the basic answer would be.. find one of the said gurus that you know exist, and hope that they don't shrug you off and give you the bird. Once you have that guru to bounce stuff off of.. and they can take the the emails of long questions and your disorganization, then you have found what every beginner, mid-class programmer needs.. someone to share the experience with and someone to critque the material.

Thats just my opinion though, and since thats how I am reaching my goals, I know it works.. atleast it works for me.. seems to work for my guru too... *wink jor*

  3. jms, season 5, the reasons for dull episodes.. on Sci-Fi Channel Picks Up Babylon 5 · · Score: 1

The contracts were only held for a certain amount of time, and another part of the problem with the ending of 4 and beginning of 5 was that the chicky who played Ivanova (too tired to recall her rl name) said she wanted more money AFTER they had killed off Martin (dont wanna remember that guys name either) jms got into a very sticky situation with things not leading to where he wanted and also being practically forced into zipping up the whole series with 4, instead of having the ability to lead on through 5. I forget where the article was, but there is, and did exist an article which focused on, and discussed the fact that actor contracts, as well as tnt, had driven jms into trying to do a lot of stuff with a small amount of time. when he was given the extension, as someone else said in this string, he wasn't given the time to "give birth" to ideas and plots that would be more enthralling.. so season 5 basically was a type of 'premature birth' of what he was trying to do. Only about 4 or 5 episodes of the last season were up to par.. and those were the ones that were end of the season, not the one in the beginning.

The hardest part of the last episode, was them giving insight to the future. Not only did they close off a lot of options, but when Crusade was aired for a "season", we already knew the outcome of their mission. So no matter if it took them 3 seasons, or 5 seasons (last minute type stuff) we knew they found a cure and saved the world, etcetc. WHICH, made Crusade cheesy in a way, bt ended B5 from future episodes if need be.

All in all, I was/am sorry it went away, but jms did a decent job of ending the series with what little he had at the time.

Dude.. if *anyone* in this group of readers reads your post, and HASN'T seen the episode you're talking about, you've basically just spoiled what was an "epic" moment for me the first time through the B5 series. Only a few episodes actually mention Delenn's connection to the Earth-Minbari war.. shush up! =b

  5. Re:Technomages on Sci-Fi Channel Picks Up Babylon 5 · · Score: 1

Technomages were around the end of year 2, beginning of year 3, if I remember correctly. Just to give those that haven't seen the very few B5 episodes with technomages in them. If you are only interested in seeing those episodes, I would probably suggest starting to watch them right around Mid-End October. (as they are starting sept.) This would be right about the first time they are mentioned. If my memory serves me right, they also come up in the movie 'A Call to Arms' (help me if I have gotten the movie title wrong) When one of the mages (later featured in crusade) contacts Sheridan and brings him together with the others needed to complete said mission. Other then those two times, they weren't shown/featured until Crusade.

Having seen all the episodes atleast 3 times, and more in some cases, I have to say that I truly wish/hope that they could get the actors back to revive B5 or Crusade as the case may be. Of the very little TV I watch, my interest in the boob tube would most definately be revived if one or both of these shows were.

Don't be sucha spazz..be greatful that ANYONE does ANYTHING and that there is even a /. for us to read. Dorko.

Thanks for the great interview Nik.. hope to hear more about this as the subject progresses.
