Apparently you're the one who didn't "rtfa." The people who order drugs from canada often DO "get the big jars of pills the pharmacists get" because they're ordering a 3 to six month supply at a time.

I guess you also missed the part of the article that reminds us (again) "experts don't expect it to stop there." And the part where they are already making the argument "the cost is great but the need is great" etc.

Go ahead, mod this post down too. You fucking well know I'm right.

Yes, that's right - the lot of you just keep repeating to yourselves "there's nothing wrong here - it's always the user's fault when a distribution breaks during an OOTB install..."

I would remind you this attitude of zealotry is what's prevented linux from completely overtaking microsoft until now, but I'm sure you won't care since "linux doesn't need more users."

That's OK too - like I said: I've left mandrake in the dust and don't care to look back. You lot enjoy your circle jerk and keep buying plenty of that french whine!

And with the stated mission being to remain "free as in everything" it's a safe bet it's going to continue to grow in popularity.

So yes, I would say that, compared to the system on ubuntu (deb packages with synaptic), RPM sucks ass. they use bsd and that's "open source." But their version of bsd doesn't give you access to that gee-whiz desktop, and contributing under apple's "open source" license gives them all the rights to your code but everyone else has to pay if they say so. People still contribute to that project, and Apple still gets to charge for every OS. Granted they're talkign about giving away Solaris, but their customers are corporate, not home users, and corporate customers buy expensive service contracts (that is if sun still has any solaris customers).

Java is "open source." Has been "since day one" (I guess). If it's so free why isn't it included with so many linux distributions? Because it ISN'T FREE. It's "open" - that ain't free. I can read a book cover to cover, but that don't mean I can republish it, altered or otherwise.

  8. no justification on Fedora Core 3: Worth The Upgrade? · · Score: 2, Interesting

But I will tell you anyway. I ran mandrake for a long time. they changed gcc systems with every release, and seemed to install it broken about half the time. Until this most recent switch (when I left them forever) I had been using mdk10.1 "community" for the last few months and have been completely unable to get the damn compiler to work even to run basic make-installs on simple stuff like rar and divfix.

So, every time I wanted to install something I had to spend hours looking up shit on rpm.pbone and hoping I could find all the packages it needed to solve the dependancies. Even with urpmi (which is inarguably better than basic RPM) it was not uncommon for the installer to get completely stumped and either give up or just mangle the OS. The times I tried to upgrade gnome resulted in my having to perform a complete reinstall over the mess it made of my desktop. and because I use an encrypted userland it NEVER shut down because of the way it (and last I tried, RH) deals with encrypted partitions (although that's another unrelated point I mention it because I find it hilarious they've apparently been given a bunch of money to develop a "secure linux" - good luck France, you're gonna need it.)

With ubuntu "upgrades" are about two clicks and a lotta downloading away. If you're on a broadband link I doubt you'd ever have to reinstall, because the package installer is so very reliable. It's not perfect, but compared to RPM it's like running linux in seven league boots.

RPM sucks ass. I used mandrake for the longest, but never again. I never realized how easy linux could be until I used a debian distribution.

Ubuntu is a fantastic distribution, easy to install and with good support. It's a single CD which they will send you free for the asking and, because it uses debian, you can order an assload of easy to install software on 7Cds for about ten bucks. I don't have broadband either but I do if I take my laptop into town, but even with all that free bandwidth it's still cheaper just to order the CDs (even at a couple MBps it takes HOURS to download seven CDs!)

  11. not unless portage sucks on Mandrakesoft: 10.1 Official, Good Financial News · · Score: 1

This was posted early in the day and still less than two dozen comments? I think that says a lot about the state of mandrake.

I used mandrake a very long time. But I got sick of the difficulty in upgrading, the long time delays, the lack of decent support. Mandrake is very easy to install, but I have always found it a pain in the ass to upgrade or even install anything that's not included on the CDs. The urpmi installer is an improvement on rpm, but that ain't saying much since rpm sucks so bad.

The main thing I always disliked about mandrake was the segregation of distributions. It's a decent enough system, but the community around it seems almost fanatical about the money. The websites are a goddamn confusing mess and just getting a basic question answered requires you to fill out all sorts of crap and then pay them money even to the "volunteer specialists" that list themselves on the site. (The irony is the website is so bad I personally found it not worth the effort even when I had my credit card in hand and was ready to send them 30 bucks for an answer to a support question.)

Even in the newsgroups anyone who mentions the idea of (ohmygosh!) running "the good version" of mandrake without tithing them draws a barrage of insults. Quite frankly, I find the overall tone of the project way more offensive than even that of some of the more overtly commercial efforts like Lindows (er, "Linspire") and Suse, both of which have much friendlier support communities. (Must be a French thing!)

I've been using ubuntu now for a while, and I ain't looking back. It's a very nice distribution and the software installer is fantastic. But more importantly, it has some fantastic people in the support community and the project espouses a wonderfully idealistic concept of "free."

The cdr door isn't too bad (except that it also means you have to remove the front of the drawer on the drive thus leaving the noiseproofing gasket out of the picture, which means going back four years to listening to jet engine takeoffs every time you use a DVD or CD) but the doors on the connectors mean your stuck with two choices:

    1) never use the front panel jacks

    2) use the front panel jacks and risk damage to the cheap plastic doors thus ensuring your nice looking system eventually looks like ass.

Of course, 1) isn't foolproof either, since it's incredibly easy to break on of these things off at the hinges just by laying it in the car seat wrong.

I can't stand those cubes with the jacks sticking out the front like some afterthought, either - but would it really be so hard to stick all those jacks in a nice even row at the bottom of the case behind a black rubber or felt gasket? Maybe use those black nylon fibers like at the end of vacuum cleaner dust attachments. It would look nice, be unbreakable, and only slightly more cumbersome to connect (Where's the hole? I know it's here somewhere...")

Anything other than flimsy plastic doors would be an improvement... especially at 650 fucking dollars! Yeesh!
