  1. Re:You are only hurting yourself you know.... on Kansas Board of Ed. Adopts Intelligent Design · · Score: 1

Yes there is an end, but that end will only come with the recognition of our pasta-based religion. I too am a Pastafarian, having being touched by His noodly appendage and these Christians with their teachings of 'love thy neighbour' prove just how false a prophet their god character is by their absolute disrespect of all sons and daughters of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Despite appeals to the Kansas Education Board by literally thousands of Flying Spaghetti Monsterists, they refuse to take our beliefs seriously and, despite a few notable examples on the board (see all those who voted 'against' in this case), they will not even give face by answering some of our most basic questions regarding equal rights for all religions. By redefining science to include the possibility of supernatural phenomena as a source for life on earth, they have already taken half a step towards admitting that they know deep down that we are all products of His noodliness. Now they just need to go that one step further and fully announce their conversion from this psuedo-religion Christianity to become followers of the one true God in all His Pastafarian Glory. Rejoice that He has come and He shall come again. Commune with others, break the garlic bread, drink the tomato sauce, share in the Holy sanctity of pasta and marvel at the purity that is life as a pastafarian.

It can actually be traced back to MacOS too... strangely enough! The OS is based on NextStep btu the GUI has one foot very firmly in the Mac legacy... which is why it wasn't such a pain to switch from 9 to X.

  3. Re:OSX Virus on Computer Security Still Totally Inadequate · · Score: 1

I'd say that how long he's been running a Mac has everything to do with it. If he'd been running them for 20 years (and totally virus-free) like some of us, then he'd have a different perspective on the issue.

Given that the Mac commands a good 15% of the market and Apple are no longer some obscure 'other' operating system, being continually in the public eye with the help of the iPod, why aren't we seeing a corresponding level of virus/worm/trojan activity on the platform? Surely there should be at least 5% of all viruses written being Mac-oriented!? But no, we're not seeing this at all... no doubt we will as more generic lusers buy into the Mac lifestyle (purchasing their Mac mini as an iPod accessory the way Apple would like them to)... they're not the brightest sparks at the best of times so they're easy to trick out of their credit details, but for the time being the Mac's NOT under attack despite the title of the article suggesting it is.

I've written to the author of the article to suggest he displays bar charts showing Mac/Windows virus release comparisons on a month by month basis for the past year to show the true picture, but I doubt this would be condusive to getting those pennies in from Symantec's advertising budget (I noticed the symantec banners all over the place around this 'article'... advertorial anyone?). They need to expand their business and with more and more people 'switching' (just generally away from 'Doze) it's slowly disappearing before their eyes!!!???

But apart from that.. I reckon you're bob on. :)

  4. Re:"One-click"? on No PodBuddy for iPod lovers · · Score: 1

Actually, I'm just wondering if using an FM transmitter with an iPod could land you in legal hot water. Not sure about the US, but in order to broadcast in the UK (if a 3rd party can freely tune into that broadcast) you need a radio broadcasters licence. And in order to broadcast copyrighted music in the UK you need to submit a copy of your playlist and pay the copyright owners their royalties through the PRS. Hmmm... maybe it's time to start legal proceedings against the manufacturers of these devices for inciting illegal radio broadcasts... mwuhahaha!!!

  5. There is no compatibility issue... on Windows to Mac Migration Guide/Advice? · · Score: 1

    1. One big difference you'll instantly notice is the lack of compatibility issues. Suddenly you're compatible with the rest of the world where previously you were only compatible with the Windoze using world. 2. Multi-button mice have been the norm since USB became standard on Macs. One piece of useful software to grab for anything more than a 2 button+scroll wheel mouse is 'USB Overdrive'. It will detect how many buttons you have and allow you to assign any of them to any task (or simply 'Pass to MacOS' for standard Left, Right Click etc) - it can also be configured to use buttons contextually, so different buttons do different things depending upon the program you're in - handy for setting 'Forward' and 'Back' in Safari, or 'Prev Tune, Next Tune' in iTunes - you'll get the idea. 3. The built-in CD writing software works well enough, but Toast is a much better option if you need to fine-tune a CD for a particular purpose. 4. As others have said... learn the kybd shortcuts. I'm amazed at how many Windows users I've met who simply don't bother to learn the shortcuts on THEIR OS (or even know they CAN use kybbd shortcuts). I use both platforms at home and work, and after having to go to a menu for a task once I don't want to go back again, so I have a look at what the shortcut is and use it the next time around. 5. You can navigate Windows, folders and pretty much everything from the keyboard and you'll find consistency across the board from one app to the next for the most used shortcuts (Open, Close, Save, Print, Quit etc etc... Option Drag to copy works in many apps, such as Illustrator, Reason, Photoshop, iMovie). Try typing the name of a file you want to open whilst you're in a folder and hey presto, it'll highlight. Want the next but one alphabetically? Hit Tab... it jumps alphabetically to the next item, use shift Tab jump reverse-alphabetically. Try Cmd (Command - or Apple for newbie Macheads) and the cursor keys for navigation. Cmd-Down is 'Open' for folders/apps/files. Cmd-Up is 'Next folder up the hierarchy'. Option (aka Alt) double-click a file to close the finder window as you open the file/folder. Option (Alt) close a window closes all current windows. Option whilst switching apps hides the app you just switched from. So many things in there that you'll discover. 6. Plug n Play is a reality. Drag n Drop is a reality. USB Memory stick? Digi Camera? Need to install drivers? Noooooo... just plug it in and it'll pop-up on the desktop as a removable drive annd you can just drag n drop the files to/from. Suddenly your camera becomes your portable storage device!!! 7. You'll like this one - a greater than average number of Mac users are Macevangelists!!! This comes from many many years of defending their choice of OS, but also comes in extremely useful when needing advice or help - hence the regional and local MUG's (Mac User Groups) out there. I've been using Macs since about '85 myself and am very evangelist about it, and ALWAYS happy to help a needy user or newbie. Recently I've seen a much bigger shift to my fave OS than ever before, so you're very much at the head of a growing trend. 8. Once you've had Mac, you never go back. Well... you'll probably still keep the odd PC about for PC-ness sake, but not for serious productivity. 9. A good rule-of-thumb is: 'if it makes sense for a particular action to yield a particular result, it's probably built into the OS'. This is generally missed by most people because it's something Apple don't shout about. There's an amazing wealth of stuff built-in (and the same holds true for the hardware) that you'll never know about until you stumble across it. If it seems like a sensible thing for you to be able to email a file to somebody by simply dragging it to the Mail app, then try it, it might work and if it doesn't then it won't have hurt to have a go (the mail one will by the way *hehe*)! Same system-wide though. So when you're PC-owning friends are bashing their heads against a wall because they're trying to set up a computer to computer network but have no twisted

  6. Oh, for f**k's sake, c'mon on Examining Microsoft Update · · Score: 1

M$ have been dodgy since their inception and nothing they do will ever shock me any more, whether strictly 'legit' (like buying out new technologies and grafting a cumbersome, useless and clunky M$ front end on it to the point where it's usability is negated) or totally dodgy (90% of their activities - hehe). The point I want to make is this - if the software was written properly in the first place, there'd be no need for Windoze Update and the multitude of patches to fix serious security holes et al... isn't it time to look elsewhere for your computing kicks? Spread the message - be deviant in your useage whatever the hardware/software configuration. The more people (users who know nothing of the IT sector must still get sick of WinUpdate's constanr demands) who realise how shoddy this ParaDOS (a paradoxical OS - it's an Operating System that doesn't really Operate) is then the more of them might start to actively seek alternatives... we hope :)
