Jeez man its a joke.
Ok I am in evil entity Linux, but thats harder to explain. So a simple refernce to KDE is easy. Like how do I explain how I got to look at my programs in enlightenment? Not so easy for the masses.
I have looked all over my computer for this IE thingy you all speak of. I cant find it anywhere. I typed "whereis ie" in the console but nothing turned up. I typed find / -name IE and again nothing. I looked for a man page found none. I clicked on the gear icon thing and looked though the programs installed I dont have it. So I typed apt-get IE. No luck.
Must be some obscure piece of software that I cant find. Guess I am better of WITHOUT IT!
I know the original story is long gone, and we have different opinions about this matter. But I do know you might check your page for a response, and I want to give a quick one.
As I mentioned, UT2003 runs well under linux and was sold with the windows package, so either way, if anyone bought it they got a choice. I like that, and hope to see others work towards that goal.
About MS: I am in the camp that MS wants to know a little more then is good for them (or maybe me), but your opinion is sound as well.
Finally, I wanted to thank you for an open honest discussion without bashing or name calling. Its refreshing these days. If I had karma to give....
My point was simply that some people wont want to dual boot just to play games, and I am out of context beacause this really is a discussion about WineX and I was writing more about the general windows vs Linux dual boot issue. And in the end, if I use WineX for now to run old games, perhaps when the developers realize I only have linux (hopefully many os us) they will native port. For example UT2003 under Linux runs great!
The Mozilla issue WAS one of the strangest things I have seen on a windows maching. I assure you I DO know the difference betweeen installed VS default handler changes. Mozilla and all its files simply did not exist. The complete installation and directories dissapeared. The registry had no entries for it.
This has only happened once. This was Win2000 update to Service Pack 3 (something by the way I dont do anymore). Wether this is repeatable I dont know, but we both know that the EULA DOES allow for this. Microsoft explicitly says that they can enter your machine and make changes, supposdly for security. It IS conceivable that MS would consider using a different browser a compromise in security, although I find that laughable.
Because I seriously dont wont windows on my computer anymore. I dont like the direction MS is going, and I dont want to be a part of it. MS wants to eliminate us having local files, (.net) pay every 6 months for windows and office as per the next EULA, chooses what software they want on my computer, etc. etc.
For example I was setting up a computer for a customer and one of the first things I do when its a windows machine is get Mozilla. Then I did a windows update. Upon reboot Mozilla had been uninstalled! Thanks MS!
If you think I this is all doom and gloom, and it cant be that bad, etc, keep in mind that microsoft has only 2 products that make money: Windows and Office. When shareholders demand you make more money (growth) and you are the monopoly, you only have ONE thing you can do: raise prices.
So you should thank us folks who dont want windows at all, because MS knows that we are out there telling our friends and the balance right now is this:
Which one makes me more uncomfortable: Linux, Mac, or Windows. It does slow MS's plans down.
Are you trapped in time like 4 years ago? I think you said it yourself, cant expect a modern game to run on much less then the above.
And as for price, late last year we bought a Athlon 650 plus motherboard, 256 megs ram, case and powersupply, and a TNT 2 32 meg card for our file server. Total cost = under $100. Yes adding the hard drives did cost us more, but they were raided scsi 10,000 rpm , but you dont need that for gaming.
So the specs above are very old, and one should be able to grab a computer like that for not too much. My year old laptop next to me is a p3 1Ghz with 512Megs, and the computer I am typing on now, I upgradded from a 750 athlon to a 1.4 for the whopping sum of $35.
All parties interested are in on this one.
Watch this logic:
Step 1: Use other peoples names in your product
Step 2: Complain, get Media Attention
Step 3: Ask for Mass Emailing!
Step 4: Sell those emails to spammers
Step 5: PROFIT!
Seriously, would I have heard about the other browser or the database? How many more names will "pop up"?
Heh.

I posted this same idea a minute ago but I'm going to say it again:
The oil companies have already divied up their share of the Iraqi Oil. The Kissinger plan in the mid 70's (Completly documentable by the way) said that we should invade the middle east to secure the oil. He never went through with it because he believed in Alies, the UN and had fears of reprisal by the other super power at the time: Russia. But that idea has not gone away. We are implementing it now because we no longer need the UN and we dont have any fear of Russia.
Like I said before, the oil pipeline that was not allowed in pre war Afganistan is likely to go though now, and the leader we installed there is a former employee of the company that wanted to put it through. Coincidence?
The fact that Bush and Cheney are oil men doesnt at least set of some warnings in your head? The fact that Haliburton, Cheney's company has been fighting 18 court cases in the last 3 years for tax evasion shouold give you an idea about his character. Setting up a "OIl probing" operation in the Caymen Islands (known tax haven) is just ludacris (like they have any oil).
No this isnt just about oil, but its a factor. Global dominance is a much bigger facter. Please read the US document "Stragey to Security". Then you decide.
Agreed. Thats why the oil deals HAVE ALREADY BEEN MADE. We have already divied up the oil to the corporations. If that isnt enough for you how about Afganistan? The pipeline wouldnt go through, they were against it. Using terrorism as an excuse (but possibly a justifiable one, but the ends werent that alone) we took over, and put who in charge? A former employee of the oil company that wanted to put the pipeline in.
IN any case, this world is going to get much more dangerous. The only way a country can have a way to get the US to talks now is to have Nuclear weapons, or else the US will just run them over. Why do you think there has been such an increase in spending to have intercepting devices (missles and lasers?). Please read the US goverment publication "Strategy for Security" and see how little it has to do with terrorism, and how much it has to do with using US force to create an empire.
I cant believe you people are saying this is a bad idea! Are you nuts?
There are many good reasons to switch the college over to Linux:
Frist there is a Linux distrubution for colleges called college linux and as such is free and geared towards teaching students about programming and computer languages.
Second, Linux is by far less costly to maintain giving a college net savings over Windows Machines even without a donation.
Third, Any institution that recieves any sort of public funding should be using open source software anyways. I dont want colleges teaching kids how to be MS or Apple drones.
Fourth, any class that needs a specific application that is windows only, such as SPSS, can just use wine, winex, or VW to run that software anyways.
Fifth. Some argue that students wont be prepared for the real world. I disagree. Microsoft has only 2 products that make money, and since they dominate the market, the only way to increase revenue is to raise prices. Liscence agreements are getting worse every year, and Office is expectd to cost $250 every six months in the next few years. I would argue that the group of students who have learned Linux will have AN ADVANTAGE over the others in the workplace (how much is an MCSE worth today anyways?). Most information they learn from Linux is easily transferred over to windows anyways, such as how TCP/IP works, or programming such as C++.
Is the man voting with his money? Sure, but were talking an individual here, not a corporation. He has nothing to gain except insuring that the future of computer users will still have choices and not be all Microsoft.
Perhaps the college and the donator could begin by funding a student organized feasibility and cost/benefit anlysis study. We have a question, we want to find out. Isnt that what schools are supposed to do?
genetically modified organisms? Are you serious? The history so far of this is to kill off important species that are needed to keep the plants growing! We find genetic drift that kills the polinators. Hows that help? We discover that plants grow better with the heavy use of synthetic fertalizers that we later discover robs the soil of nutrients we need.
If anything we need to reduce our population. Not try and reengineer our science for how to grow more food. It has not worked and probably will never work.
Thanks. I was hoping someone would get that I am having this and that break, and face it its annoying.
Someone else said that they wondered why I would have an Xwindow on a server. I do, but I dont use it much, nor install anything on it.
However I also run Linux on my work computer and on my laptop and I do use KDE and sometime Gnome and Enlightenment. So this is what I am talking about. I need a work computer to be stable and at the same time I need an interface that I can use to get work done. So thats what I end up breaking, not the servers.
I am relativly new to Linux, but I have a fair background in UNIX. Hell, I can program in COBOL (dead I know but its what I learned in college). So its not like I am completely lost. But with so many things to configure when something goes wrong, I get lost at trying to solve the problem.
So you are a troll?
interested in what is not one's personal or proper concern (Curious).
Heh
Hey arent we all trying to get to the best GUI for Linux or are we not?
Calling me drunk is ok. Calling me stupid is ok. Calling me offended is ? Why would I be offended? Lets recap. We are talking about computer gui's. I have an opinion where is yours? Personally I find the Amiga a great interface with and easy command line. The topic was about KDE VS Gnome. Yeah I took the liberty of calling gnome nome, and yeah I sort of went off with a bent towards KDE. Ok whats the rebuttle? I am stupid? I am drunk?
Um OK like this is my United States of Whatever.
Liam Lynch.
Are you being narrowly, stodgily, and often ostentatiously learned (pedantic) or are your being of or relating to knowledge that is restricted to a small group (essoteric)
Right now, and I am telling you this becasue you are geeks.
No MATTER what I do, KDE, GNOME, Redhat, Mandrake, Evil, and all the others..........THEY BREAK! I have broken every installation possible, except maybe Knoppix, but thats in a class by itself.
When I setup a SERVER I dont give a damn about the GUI interface. I want stability. And thats what I get. Redhat 7.3 on my servers. Redhat 8 with no gui on my firewall seems to work OK but is a pain in the ass.
The point is that NO xwindows system has got it down cold. I want a review of the Xwindows server that knows my vid card, knows my sound card, knows that I have hardware graphics etc. My redhat 8 using KDE has become broke at my work. Sound card is busy. Always busy. Windows doesnt complain only Linux. Configure till my ass is blue and its still refusing to play XMMS. WTF. More important then KDE or GNOME is that linux gets its act together. Yes I know a new X is out.
Sorry to say this but windows slogan was "where do you want to go today" and Linux under a graphical interface is "What do you want to break toaday?"
I use gnome when I am root. As a user I like KDE. I am using Redhat 8 and I like KDE. I wanted to like gnome, I really did. I have upgraded it and KDE, and yes KDE is HUGE and its bloated big time. But so what, its linux, and its not like its gonna hit a swap file. Linux does what it does well, and on this laptop KDE is running smooth and sweet. I have eye candy, I have apps I use, and they work fine. Gnome just doesnt cut it when it comes to looking good. There are also several things in gnome that bug me.
But the best part of all is that it doesnt matter, I also use Evil Entity and have been very intrigued with Enlightenment. When I get around to gentooing E17 as long as I get font antialiasing, I am going there and not turning back. Evil Entity Linux has shown me enlightenment and I am on board. How cool is it to double click the desk top and get a console? Very.
How fast is it? Click and GO.
So in conclusion KDE is huge, but has a reason to be, gnome? I dont know what your thinking. Its becomming more blurred every day.
On NPR a scientist was saying that space station funding and cooperation with Russia was at a standstill because they are helping Iran work towards a nuclear powerplant.
So congress wont give them money, then they force money on NASA.
That aside, I hate space exploration. I want our problems solved first. Why go out there when we are so busy trying to kill ourselves here?
I do not understand the point of exploring space at all, its such a waste of money, time, and resources. I am a geek, and that makes me realize the folly all the more. Until we develop the tech to do it right, Blow it off.
Thanks

Oh I forgot to mention, you are on the wrong site....this is not the pron you are looking for. Go back to playing CS on your win 98 box. Geez.
wow how intelligent of you. Someday you will see one.
Humor my friend, simple Humor. I got modded down, I knew I would. Like I care.
I have looked all over my computer for this IE thingy you all speak of. I cant find it anywhere. I typed "whereis ie" in the console but nothing turned up. I typed find / -name IE and again nothing.
