  1. Re:the installer issue on Introduction to Debian · · Score: 1

last time i checked out the 'new isntaller' it was not useable.

anyway i do really hope there'll be a new installer in the new release.

as for now there is either autodetection (knoppix) and grphical installer (pigy) but they arent used because AFAIK they are implemented on ia32 only.

  2. the installer issue on Introduction to Debian · · Score: 1

there's a great autodetection system in a debian based distro (namely Knoppix).
you can just install knoppix to hard drive and add additional apt repositories.
why it hasn't been included into the main branch then?
debian supports more than 10 platforms and AFAIK it would be against debian policy to favorize one (ia32) over others (and knoppix autodetection supports only ia32)
the graphical interface and autodetection are planned but we'll probalby have to wait a little bit more...
on the other hand the fact that debian supports so many platfors and includes only free software pays off, there're lots of debian based distibutions including OpenZaurus for ARM and lots of liveCD

as for up-to-date software - i dont think there's other linux distro than could compare with debian sid where updates are daily and usually there's a debian package after just a few days after the release

  3. Re:Hmmm on OpenOffice.org SDK Released · · Score: 1

    AFAIK that's not right

sure app (like evolution) needs to be able to handle bonobo but it doesnt have to know them a priori

nautilus is quite good file browser but at the same time a very good bonobo-activating app able to handle bonobos that didnt even exist at the time it was written/compiled

as a user i just make it open some filetypes by some viewers which i installed after nautilus

  4. Re:Hmmm on OpenOffice.org SDK Released · · Score: 2, Interesting

there's abiword bonobo object on the way
and more to come (including gtk-vi ;) )

so in a near future you should be able to edit messages as in abiword (or vi!) wich IMHO is great
not as feature rich as oo but lightweight and very usable

  5. Re:NVidia Drivers on Operational Testing of Linux Kernel 2.5.x · · Score: 3, Insightful

one can compile and load nvidia binary module, though one needs to apply some patches

i am using 2.5.66/2.4.20 alternatively while using nvidia binaries

2.5 works prety well though small changes fool some user space programs

for example since the name extension of modules are different i had to hack my debian debconf script to work properly
also gkrellm memory monitor doesn't work (free works though)

as co-operative as someone like Linus

    you mean that Linus?!
the one who told "I'm the one to say 'no'"?
i respect Him very much but, having read a few threads on lkml, don't find him co-operative
(still i think it's good for linux, at least it has worked so far)

huh, reformatted it a little... the previous was unreadable

personally i would love that kind of model but the price is way too high, also

there should be monthly pay or traffic pay (not per track)

there should be ability to chose the format (ogg/mp3/...) and the bitrate

funny enough there's http://www.allofmp3.com which provides all that
    there's even legal info:
MediaSerives pays out fees for downloaded materials that are subject to the Russian Federation Copyright And Related Rights Law.
    but this is probably bullshit

anyway that's the way i would love the music industry works in the (near!) future
plus the albums are all packed (tarred?) and contain the bitmaps of the inlets

right now when i buy a cd i usually put it into cd only once - to rip and encode to ogg
