I was suprised too... and there sunday night industrial show makes me smile... ohhh to be 16 dressed in black and missunderstood again. But I have to say that 90.3 KEXP is the best radio station in town.
i tend to just avoid the sucky programs... I don't really like rock-a-billy so I don't listen to that hour on friday nights... i don't like reggae, so I avoide saturday morning. I don't like gospel so no sunday morning. None of that is really difficult... the hard part is avoiding world pop weekdays, 6-7. That's usually when I'm in the car the most... most often bad, but sometimes a european rap song will put a smile on my face.
Try KEXP. It's a great place to hear music, you can listen to the last two weeks worth of programing online. It's the best radio station i've ever heard, and might be the best internet radio station as well. The only downside is their pledge drives, but since it's non comericial, i'll gladly trade these to have commercial free radio.
I agree... i think this or the iRiver players are much better deals than the iPod. they do everything the iPod can do (except work with iTMS) and more.
You should have tried using notmad explorer from redchair software. It's one of the best pieces of software I've ever used, and lets you use your nomad like god intended.
I just looked up both the 20gb ipod and the iriver... and they're both $399. So the iRiver is the same price (or cheaper if you shop around) and you get more features. Plus I own a iRiver SlimX and must say it has impressed the hello out of me.
The Rio Karma supports Vorbis and FLAC. It has the ability to use ethernet to sync using a java so that you can use any OS. It's equivalent to the iPod in every other way I can find. And it even weights.1oz less. This or the iRiver (i've had a good experience with the slimX) is what I would buy.
It also has alot to do with what you listen to. If you're listening to complex music with tons of different frequencies playing at one time, it's going to be harder to compress, and hence will sound worse. A good example is the polyphonic spree. There are 25+ members in the band. The feature a choir with girls singing alto and men singing tenor and barritone. The lead singer is a tenor. The have keyboards, guitar, bass, drumms, percussion, violin, viola, flute, trumpet, tuba, harp, etc. In their more complex arrangements it really doesn't sound that good in ANY lossy compressed format i've tried. But on your average 3 or 4 piece band, MP3 even 128kbps will sound find to most people.
Actually, when I listen to MP3's I get booming bass. I think it's because the 60-100Hz range is compressed less than the 20-60Hz range. Therefore when I listen to the music at higher volumes the lower end doesn't amplify the same as the boomier frequencies.
Unless you're playing WAV's I wouldn't talk about "audiophile" quality. I would bet the rio karma playing flac would probably sound better than the iPod playing the same song compressed.
I agree... I think all meat should be produced free range and all vegetables should be grown organically. The fact that we feed chickens, pig, and euthanized pets to our cows is deplorable.
That sucks... I guess I'm spoiled in seattle (and to a degree in dallas). Our farmers markets get the majority of our stuff from local producers. The exception being tropical fruits, but alot of that is from california which isn't that far anyway.
That helps, but as to my current living conditions I can only grow tomatoes in the summer and a few herbs. But one thing that everyone can do is to buy local. Shop at farmers markets. Doing so saves the energy of transporting the food long distances and packaging materials. Another thing you can do is buy organic food (not hard if you're shopping at farmer's markets). This saves on the petrochemicals used in pesticides and fertilizers.
It's a little more complex than that... 1lb of beef requires about 7 pounds of grain. But 7 pounds of grain requires 1000 pounds of water. so (assuming the cow doesn't drink) it costs 7000 pounds of water to get one pound of beef. Now the earth doesn't loose or gain much water, so on the surface this doesn't look bad, but remember that every time we put the water on the plants it picks up pesticide and fertilizer pollutants... not a real good system.
I'm glad everyone doesn't have this attitude, or the world would be a pretty shitty place. The world doesn't revolve around you... we're all in this together.
They also finace them... without studio money very few big movies would get made... it's not like peter jackson has the 300 million dollars to do LOTR by himself... very few people are George Lucas.
But there are things that this can probably do that you're custome $1000 system won't.
Does your system have push button on, no boot up time? Does your system have one touch CD burning capability? Does your system have the yamaha remote and the ability to be easily controlled by universal remotes? Does it provide a simple OSD (keyword here being simple)? Does it look and function just like every other audio component.
I won't argue that this thing is overpriced. And you or I or any geek could build something that does 99% of what this does for less. But to non geeks things like this are much better than anything you or I could set up. That's the reason I don't have a HTPC right now... my GF has a hard enough of a time trying to watch a DVD now... imagine if the DVD player was a PC!
But what's the real cost of oil? If we had to spend the real cost of that gallon og gasoline every time we bought it, people would switch... the problem is that the real cost is hidden.

You mention seattle, but you fail to mention 90.3 KEXP. That's the station to listen to in town.

I listen to KEXP and 90% of the time they are playing something good.
I agree... i think this or the iRiver players are much better deals than the iPod. they do everything the iPod can do (except work with iTMS) and more.
And of course you were modded down.
You should have tried using notmad explorer from redchair software. It's one of the best pieces of software I've ever used, and lets you use your nomad like god intended.

KEXP in seattle... the best radio station on earth. There is plenty of good radio out there, you just have to know where to look.
You're telling me the University of chicago or Northwestern or any of the other colleges around don't have a radio station?
I agree... I think all meat should be produced free range and all vegetables should be grown organically. The fact that we feed chickens, pig, and euthanized pets to our cows is deplorable.
sorry, i meant it takes 1000lbs of water to produce 1lb of grain... my fingers went faster than my head there.
That sucks... I guess I'm spoiled in seattle (and to a degree in dallas). Our farmers markets get the majority of our stuff from local producers. The exception being tropical fruits, but alot of that is from california which isn't that far anyway.
Guess I should get my own garden :)

Trade Wars... ahh the memories...

It's the same way in most of america. If the scooter is 50cc's or under in most places you can get a license at 14 or 15.
