I completely disagree. The "crime" is the same either way. The kid is guilty of cheating, and should be suspended for a couple of weeks, or possibly expelled, but the cops don't need to enter in to the picture. Just think about this for a second, if the kid had attacked another kid and beat him senseless the cops would NOT be involved. Why is this a more serious issue? And don't tell me he 'more likely would have gotten away with it' because the individual teachers computer is almost certainly NOT the only places the grades are recorded. There's almost 0 chance of him actually getting a change to his grade to actually affect anything for more than a few days. What the kid did was TOTALLY wrong, but it is NOT a criminal matter.

So now schools get to pick and choose which cases they turn over to the cops? It's ok for someone to be the victim of a Assault and Battery, but it's a FELONY to cheat now? And that's all this was, remember, cheatting. It's not a felony to use a pencil to alter your grade in the paper gradebook. Why is it a felony to do it on the computer?
Punishment should have been handled by the administration and the kids parents this was NOT a metter for the cops.

Being bullied as a kind/teenager turned me into an asshole eventually. I'm now abrasive, verbally abusive, and sarcastic to anyone that I hear put down anyone else. Of course, that doesn't apply to me since I seem to have no qualms about personally heaping abuse on people. Though I have noticed I tend to try and make it good natured with my friends. But god forbid some random stranger say something marginally stupid in my presence...
The reason for my atrocious behavior is that I'm subconciously trying to pick fights with people. Since now I'm physically able to take care of myself I have an underlying desire to have someone start a fight with me. So now, whenever I can't get a controlled fight every couple of weeks I get edgy and start working out more and more. I have to have an outlet for my agression.
In fact, I started back to my martial arts classes to pursue my second degree BB because I started to have powerful urges to attack people on the street. So now I can channel that back into my classes and I'm a much happier person again.
But I can definately say that being bullied through elementary, middle, and part of high school made me a much more violent person than I would normally be and I've had to work to control that. Oh, I'm also paranoid, I continuasly suspect that random people might attack me on the street and evaluate them level of threat they pose while preparing to repel an assault and run.

"Love" is the same way. I mean, how many people REALLY "Love" spaghetti? I hope it's not as many as keep saying it... Extremes of words are too often abused in our culture because most people lack a clear understanding of what the word really means. Also, extreme words have fewer letters, so it's easier to say "I HATE broccolli", than to say "I dislike the taste of broccolli" so laziness breeds extremity of language, which in term reduces the extremity of the feeling associated with the word. After all, how can I feel the same way about spaghetti as I do about my wife? If I say I love them both, what do I really mean? I Love my wife, I like the taste of spaghetti. Substantially different concepts.

It's also more difficult to establish a goal in Go. In chess your goal is clear, "Capture the King", in Go the goal is much more ephemeral, "Surround the most territory points securely". Also, there is no clear "end" to a Go game until both players agree to stop placing stones. I picked up one Go program that didn't ever have an End condition met. It would keep placing stones for ever. That meant it would fill in its own territory until there were no more legal moves, then I would place one stone and take all of the stones it had on the board, and it would start over filling the board in until it had no legal moves.
GNUGo is much better at figuring out when the game is over and will Pass at the appropriate times. Sometimes it passes a bit early but it never continues to play stones long after it has become pointless.
And with GNUGo running on a dual 2.4ghz Xeon it kicks my ass. I regularly lose by 30 moku in an even game. But I can usually beat it with a 3 stone handicap and sometimes with a 2 stone. And for those keeping track my rating is 7kyu. Which sucks, but doesn't suck uberhard.
