MOSTLY HARMLESS
Of course the HHGttG will be lost on most people, but it's fun.
Anyone interested in getting one of these T-shirts e-mail me at sleffer@home.com. They will probably end up costing about 15$ apiece depending on how much it costs to have them printed.
I'm not. I have abandoned all hope of intelligence springing from the US. This way I am never unpleasantly surprised by US stupidity, but sometimes, just once in a while I am surprised at a slight sign of reemerging intelligence.
Yeah, right before the politicians grab baseball bats and beat the shit out of it and leave it bleeding in the gutter to die a slow death by committee.
Intelligence is a scarce commodity in the US, and it's mostly applied to obtaining more and more money instead of educating people or making the living conditions in our country better.
Anyway though... When doing freelance computer work (or anything like this, even plumbers, electricians and all that) it's usually better to get an idea of how much it is going to cost you to do certain jobs and charge by the job. People are really reluctant to give up $60/hr for "General computer labor" (which is actually a good price) but a "Well, I can install that hard-drive for $50.00" usually makes it easier to swallow. Incidently, that is how Best Buy (where I work) prices computer labor.
Does anyone who work at best buy realize what a TOTAL ass Rape their prices for computer work are? I walk in there, stand near the customer service counter and offer to do jobs for half of what you guys charge. No to mention that the techs at the Best Buy near me don't know shit... It's pathetic!
Oh, sorry about the Rant, my Hd crashed after my GF kicked over my box and Best Buy didn't have the 13 gig for 140$ that I wanted, So I had to pay 125 for a 9.1. >:\
I mean, everyone I know who is looking for new hardware asks me about what 3d card to buy, and that's still only like 10 or 12 people.
The subset of consumers who read Ars and Slashdot really isn't enough to make or break a company. And if you ask me, it shouldn't be. One schmuck in marketing shouldn't kill off the parent company.
It may not make more break the company, but it's still alienating a big chunk of consumers. Which is ALWAYS bad for a new company looking to make it big.I mean, say there are 100K people who read Technica and slashdot combined, and each of those people gives advice to 10 people to steer clear of that company. That's 1 million sales right there. Heck, Sega is exstatic because they just hit 1 million sales with the Dreamcast, 1 million sales could make or break most companies. Of course that deal with nintendo goes a long way towards assuring immunity to market pressure.
I'm guessing that Mr. Marketing there is going to have his ass hung out to dry. When you alienate so many people who are potential early purchasers of your product as well as the subset of the population that makes recommendations to 80% of the consumers making purchases you have fucked up royally.
How many people are going to recommend this card/chipset to their friends/family after this incident? Not me, I'm still pimping the V3 2000 for cheap gaming and the GeForce 256 for the bad boys. After I check out the V4 and V5 maybe I'll revise my recommendations, but they definately won't go in favor of ArtX.
Kintanon PS. Watch for my article entitled 'Devil's Advocate' to appear soon on www.dailymac.com, the site isn't open yet, but my article will be one of the first! In the meantime you can check out www.dailyimac.com for a taste of what DailyMac will be like.

You have given a prime example of the need for education on the relationship between rights and responsibilities.
As a semi-fascist, I truly believe that everyone should ask how their actions could affect the country and their countrymen. You seem to be only interested in what your rights are, and how you can interpret your rights to interfere with the rights of others. This person wanted to cause a scare. He wanted to walk into a crowded theater and yell "Fire". I have no doubt of that.
The FBI probably asked the site to take a gander at the site and determine whether or not this broke the agreement the site maintainer signed. I would be surprised if it didn't.
Now, having given 6 years of my life to defending the rights you enjoy, I think you need to consider what affect this person's perceived rights might have on others. If I ran around saying that everything you posted contained an HTML exploit, I would look as silly as this "artist" did. You would also be inconvenienced.
"Think not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." - JFK
We all need to live by those words. The needs of the few do not outweigh the needs of the many, except in the minds of children and romantics.
Ah, excellent, then since there are more of us than there are of you, and we find you to be taking up resources that would be better spent in purchasing us large screen TVs and T1 lines, you won't mind turning over all of your posessions to us for the benefit of the many, eh? I suggest you rethink your beliefs in the sanctity of the majority as there are FAR more idiots in the world than intelligent folks. Maybe sometime the whim of the majority and 'what's best for society' isn't always what's RIGHT? After all, it would be GREAT for society if we took the 10 richest people on earth and divided their assets among the rest of the population....
Off topic but I've said it before and I'll say it again. You can say all the inoffensive things you want. No one needs to say controversial things, no one needs to say offensive things.
I find your statement to be HIGHLY offensive and demand that you be censored in the future and your posts to slashdot be automatically deleted.
Just to comment, the second amendment guarantees the right to bear arms *to form a militia*. It doesn't guarantee 1) what *type* of arms, and 2) that those arms will go completely unmoderated... and I don't think *anyone* sees a necessity to own automatic assault rifles in their own homes, other than nutballs that need such guns kept *far* away from them
According to the founding fathers every able bodied man in this country is part of the militia. A militia should be effectively armed in a manner which would allow them to contend with armed troops. I'd say having government issued M-16s would be perfectly acceptable. All other regulations would stay in place and be more enforced, and anyone being issued an m-16 would have to A. Have no criminal record, B. Be certifiably sane, C. be 25 years old.
considering what chaos goes on during any other ney year's, i think i have to side with the FBI on this one. The last time we had a turn of the century, people thought the world was commming to an end. Lucikly back then the average smoe didn't have access to firearms.
What the HELL are you talking about? At the turn of the last century (1900 over to 1901) fire arms where in abundant supply all over the country, shooting was a gentlemans sport, and almost every man in the country owned a rifle. Of course, at the turn of the last MILLENIUM there weren't quite so many firearms ya know....
One must remember something extremely important: free speech is protected.... HOWEVER.... Nothing says that anyone else must support your message with their resources. For example, you have the right to publish and distribute your own magazine, but you do NOT have the right to demand that an arbitrary magazine publishes your essays. Similarly, the FBI (or anyone else) does not have to get any sort of legal document to tell an ISP to wipe out your web site. All they have to do is ask nicely, and get the ISP to agree that they shouldn't be supporting this. Then, subject to the agreement that you have with your ISP (which almost ALWAYS protect the ISP, and practically never gives you any say in anything at all), your pages get trashed. End of story. Nobody's constitutional rights were stomped on at all.
So what's the moral of the story? Find yourself a medium that you control, don't depend on renting space from other companies. How you do that is up to you.
Ahhh! Excellent, that means I can put that big 'No Blacks Allowed' Sign back outside of my resteraunt! If they want to eat freely they should do so in a medium they control, right? This guy was paying for his website, no one was being forced to look at it, support it, or even acknowledge it. but he DID pay money for the service he was recieving which should count for something even in this country. Would you be equally as complacent if the FBI had asked your ISP to pull your site? What if they decided to go one step further and yank your 'net access? Maybe decide you were a rabbel rousing dissident who needed to be jailed? After all, if what this man has to say is SO dangerous that the FBI doesn't want it said then he must be 'Evil' right? You seem to be implying that the person who owns the brick and mortar structure you are using has unlimited authority over who uses that structure. You're wrong. This man is being discrimnated against on the basis of his political beliefs if nothing else. This is shameful and your atitude towards it is equally shameful.

I know I run the risk of down moderation or flame, but I would just like to say this one thing. Why keep this topic limited to "Christmas" and not have it as "Holidays". I know some may thing I am being picky about this, or overly PC perhaps, but I happen to be raised jewish and am myself agnostic. If I were to practice religion I would be jewish. Either way, when I see things like this even though I try not to be too critical I am still somewhat bothered by something which is so christian based in a place where there is no need to be. I don't mean this to start a flame war over religion, just to say that you could be more ambigious in order to fit in people from other cultures.

In 10 years time, we'll supposedly have the technology to start taking pictures of distant planets - what if we eventually take a picture of a planet that definitively indicates that life exists on that planet (hey, are those *cities*?)?
One-hundred times slower than the speed of light? Ummm, no, sorry, light's nothing but electromagnetic radiation at a lower frequency than that which we commonly associate with the use of "radio." It's all the same thing, ergo, moving at the same speed.
If they were broadcasting Radio waves 5000 years ago then they've either blown themselves up or moved past radio waves long ago.
I'm by no means a physicist, but as far as I know, the electromagnetic spectrum is all there is. There's no faster, more efficient way to communicate than that. So they may well have moved on to higher frequencies (x-, micro-, gamma rays, etc.) than what we normally use but they would still be detecable by our instruments.
My mistake if everything travels the same speed.
As to the second point you make the erroneous assumption that we have discovered everything there is to discover. I'd not be so quick to hop on that horse if I were you.
Think about it.. They say there is a planet. They are able to see light reflecting from it. They say they found Oxygen. That means that life like ours could be capable on that planet. Taking both of these statements as true, then why cant we "hear" anything from this planet? If we can see it, we should be able to hear it. It must be that, THERE IS NOTHING TO HEAR! And if thats the case, then there is no life, or at least intelligent life. To prove my theory that WE ARE THE ONLY LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE! -matt
Lessee... Planet is 50 lightyears away from earth, assuming a nice round estimate of Radio waves being 100 times slower (Which is wrong and giving radio waves a much higher speed than they deserve) it would take 5000 years for anything to be audible here. If they were broadcasting Radio waves 5000 years ago then they've either blown themselves up or moved past radio waves long ago. And likely abandoned the planet or developed in a manner which we can not guess. Also, since they would of neccesity be silocon based I imagine they may not have any concept of many things we take for granted, sight and sound being 2 of them. As they would be VERY VERY close to their sun and going VERY VERY Fast. A rather harsh environment, eh?
10: When the power fails, lights go off one at a time, in timed sequence. Ditto for lorge-scale blackouts.
This is because the speed of electricity is actually only about 70 mph. So we can watch as the buildings run out of electricity one by one, even down to running through a cooridor just as fast as the lights go out! >:)
..that the people behind the religious fanaticism which is the real Millenium problem, don't catch wind of the whole "You fools, it's 2001 that's the new Millenium." Because they'll think, "Oh, goody another year to consolidate our power." Remember, Left Behind was a best seller before NBC announced its contribution to uninformed Apocalyptic hysteria. Besides which, didn't Pope Gregory (who I assume most non-Catholic Christian Apocalyptic Cultists would consider a tool of the Anti-Christ) eliminate a certain amount of time from the calender? Maybe it's the Eastern Orthodox new year that's going to be the Day of Judgement....
'Left Behind' is a pretty good book, as are the other 4 books in the series so far. Also, it can't have contributed to any kind of apocalyptic ferver as it doesn't give any dates. It's completely tim neutral. It has 1995-1999 technology, but that doesn't say anything about the actual date. I can't see how the book would cause uninformed apocalyptic hysteria... At best it would cause mass conversions to christianity, which I can't see as a bad thing.
.... and all the rest of the TV news media as well. They seem to enjoy promoting paranoia in every form. Every news segment about the Internet is inevitably a paranoia bit. Better not let your children anywhere the net, it's all pornography and pedophilia. This Y2K thing is WAY past the buzzword stage, but they keep insisting on rubbing our noses in it, as though we might be made MORE aware of it. Admittedly, there may be a few, probably small, problems related to the calendar rollover, but I doubt that it will be near-apocalypse as this feature will almost certainly predict.
The Y2K coverage by the networks is sponsored by the government so that people will be more accepting, even grateful, when the government 'saves' everyone by declaring martial law and putting us all in labor camps on Jan 1. Any Y2K problems will be caused by: A. Panicking hordes set off by a 30 second power outtage. B. Terrorists or Religious whackos blowing shit up. C. The goverment turning off the power so they can declare martial law, suspend the consititution and get rid of all of those damn free speech nuts.
Any actual techincal problems will be with the 20 year old government system or the IRS 386 win3.x systems.

Re:digits, or whole year?

Happy Odd Day!
·
· Score: 2
If you are looking at digits, then the next even year is 2/2/2222, since 0 is not odd nor even. But if you are looking at the whole year, then 2000 is even. But that means that 1/1/2001 would be the next odd day, since 2001 is odd. So I suspect that it is digits we are looking at. Therefore, enjoy today while you can, it's going to be a *LOOOONG* time until an even or odd day.
Ok, one more time for the math impaired. 0 = EVEN. Because it is divisible by 2 with no remainder. 0/2 = 0. Done, fini. It fits the definition of even.
but the argument could be made that 1 is not an even or an odd number because an odd number must be only have two factors, 1 and itself. 1 is divisible only by itself, therefore, not odd.
You just described PRIME numbers. Odd numbers are #s not evenly (that is with no remainder)divisible by 2. 0 is even because 0/2 = 0. 1 is not because 1/2 =.5.
It may be the last one of the millenium, but not the last we will be alive to see. (At least I hope so!)
This kind of story brings out the people who don't bother to read before they post. 2001 contains 3 even digits, 2, 0, and 0. the requirements state that all digits must be odd.
Ok, to Clarify this, TODAY IS THE *LAST* Odd day until 3111. However the 17th, 15th,13th, and 11th of this month were ALSO odd days. But this is the LAST one.
Paul Allen is funding Transmeta Transmeta has just given a release date Transmeta is promising an announcement in January Paul Allen buys a TV station which features a lot of tech stuff Airtime - lots of it - will be critical to Transmeta beating the ix86 in the mindshare stakes Conclusion:- ZDTV will be a major marketing vehicle for Transmeta, featuring and advertising the product at every opportunity, in a gamble to build up the market before the release.
That's actually an extremely good theory! I had forgotten all about Paul Allen funding Transmeta until I read this. That would be a damn good idea from a marketing standpoint, you can pimp your own product and deny companies like intel advertising on your channel. Bloody good show Paul!

Any Y2K problems will be caused by:

Kintanon
but the argument could be made that 1 is not an even or an odd number because an odd number must be only have two factors, 1 and itself. 1 is divisible only by itself, therefore, not odd.
.5.
You just described PRIME numbers. Odd numbers are #s not evenly (that is with no remainder)divisible by 2. 0 is even because 0/2 = 0. 1 is not because 1/2 =

Last time I checked, 1,1,2001 is odd...
The formula for odd numbers is 2*(n+.5)
N for 2001 = 100
N for 1 = 0
It may be the last one of the millenium, but not the last we will be alive to see.

Kintanon
1 is not an even didgit, ALL of the didgits must be even for it to be an 'even' day.
so nothing from 1000-1999 can be an even day.
And nothing from 2000-2999 can be an odd day.

I think I've figured it out.
:- ZDTV will be a major marketing vehicle for Transmeta, featuring and advertising the product at every opportunity, in a gamble to build up the market before the release.
Look at the facts:
Paul Allen is funding Transmeta
Transmeta has just given a release date
Transmeta is promising an announcement in January
Paul Allen buys a TV station which features a lot of tech stuff
Airtime - lots of it - will be critical to Transmeta beating the ix86 in the mindshare stakes
Conclusion
That's actually an extremely good theory! I had forgotten all about Paul Allen funding Transmeta until I read this. That would be a damn good idea from a marketing standpoint, you can pimp your own product and deny companies like intel advertising on your channel. Bloody good show Paul!
