Arrgh... I had 3 paragraphs about what a pain in the ass my linux experience has been and I hit 2 keys at once on this @#$!@#$ win95 box and it erased the entire thing... sigh... Guess that's what I get.... Well, the short of it was that I could get the thing to install, but nothing worked as documented. The bash shell didn't provide the same options that were listed, even after fiddling with it for an hour trying to create a new users I could create a user, but not login with it, and couldn't delete it... So I had 6 different variations of a name and no way to use them or get rid of them. Nothing else on the system worked right... I learned all of the basic navigation commands and then gave up.
My second attempt at a linux install was on a p2 350 that my parents got (They are big techies and wanted a chance to try linux out too). Well, same problem, the install was easy enough, only took me 3 tries to get one that I could login to and work with! Well, still can't create users that are usable... I purchase Linux for Dummies, which comes with Redhat 5.2, I follow the commands it sets down, EXACTLY, to the letter, still no go. Bash does NOTHING that the book says it should do, X-windows refuses to create users, complains about all kinds of things. Linux Appear to be buggier than win95. Even though I know it's just my own incompetence in not quite being able to figure out first try how all these bloody things are supposed to work. So, with that said, how did all of you start out with Linux? I'd just LOVE to be able to run Linux on one of my older machines just to tinker with, I'm dos junkie, so I love CLI's. FRAGILE MY ASS! Our ecosystem is about as fragile as a 30 ton boulder. Why must every wacked out Environmentalist flunky spout off about how "Fragile" our ecosystem is?? It's a PLANET people, No matter WHAT we do to it, it WILL recover if we kill ourselves off, and if we don't kill ourselves off then who cares what we do to it? If you want to keep some Rhino's around for aesthetic purposes, go ahead, I want to eat Rhino steak for lunch every day for a month. Rhino's as a species aren't that important, neither is any other species really... The Earth will recover eventually, and if it doesn't then who cares? It's just one planet out of an unlimited amount. The only motivation we have for keeping it up is that we'll die if we screw it up too bad. The universe isn't going to end if we blow the planet to pieces. We're a insignifcant speck in the universe, get used to it.
Oh yeah, we're monkeys, right? Since when do monkeys wear Huia hats and hunt a species to oblivion for the fun of it? Since when is it natural to eradicate total species just so you can sit on an ivory toilet and smoke out of a rhino-horn pipe and stuff another Huia feather in your hat? That has NOTHING to do with natural selection and survival of the fittest. By your rules, given our numbers, we will literally destroy life on earth and die as a species leaving only bugs (that survive UNATURAL pesticides) and plants (that survive the mutated bugs that survived the UNATURAL pesticides). And that we can consider such a thing seems, well, unnatural. How many monkeys does it take to build and set off a nuclear weapon? This isn't a creationism vs evolution rant - it's just a way of saying that we are totally UNATURAL as a species and go totally against the grain of natural selection and survival of the fittest which rules nature. By this, we have the ability to destroy the world, or restore it from past UNATURAL acts - which appears some smart people are attempting to do so. Hey, save the whales, recycle and all that green mumbo-jumbo...
Ok, I just have to point and laugh here. Does anyone complain when fireants erradicate a species in an area? This is Natural, well, so would whiping every elephant on earth out with machine guns. Because we are PART of nature. No other creature on earth is equipped to stand up against us. I'm a devout christian, but just because God created the Earth doesn't mean he can't change it, or allow it to change and grow after that. Creationism and Evolution aren't mutually exclusive. But certain facets of evolutionism are exaggerated, for instance, if Man were once Ape, then why are Apes not continually in the process of becoming Man? Creationism is frequently overblown as well, some people seem to think that The Earth is still in the exact same state as when God created it, which is obviusly untrue.... The Bible states in Genesis that man is the steward of Earth, we are supposed to watch over and take care of everything while we are here. If we kill off something, then decide to bring it back, then that's just fine.
I wanted to write a much more cohesive essay, but I'm at work and have to go earn my paycheck. Kintanon
Welfare in its current state IS BAD!!! Welfare SHOULD cover the situation here. This is one of the few times it operates in an acceptable manner. Of course, if everyone wasn't paying for it, then maybe friends and family would have had a little more cash to help your family out without the need for Welfare, but despite that this is what welfare should do. Welfare shoud NOT pay the 15-17 year old girl who got pregnant, dropped out of highschool, and proceeded to have 3 kids in 5 years. People on welfare tend to have more children so they can get more money. That is seriously wrong. People do what you pay them to do, if you pay someone to have kids, then guess what they are going to do?
Sigh... I think Minimum wage is good, otherwise a lot of college gets would be getting screwed up the arse because of the labor glut in some cities, like Athens, Ga. The University of Georgia makes up a large part of Athens, the economy of Athens is based on the 30 thousand or so people who flood into the city from fall to spring. Those people all have to work. Labor glut = Wages go down. Corporations are financially secure enough to pay people decent wages for working.
Although that's the image that many people have of US society, that's really not the case. A lot of books have documented how US society is pretty stratified with significant barriers to movement between classes. Otherwise why do so many lower class people remain in the same class for their entire lives? Please don't tell me that they're so lazy that they want to live without basic utilities. Some of them work 10+ hours a day for 6 days a week but get paid very little. I wouldn't conisder that lazy at all.
60 hours per week at min wage = $315 a week, very little in the way of taxes on that kind of money. So call it 300$, that's without overtime pay. So, 1200 a month, nock of 500 for an overpriced yet shitty apartment, 700 left, 200 for utilities in shitty apartment, 500 left, 150 for food, 350 left, 50 for any clothing that might need purchasing that month, 30 for gas, leaves 270. 10 for bus fare to and from work, 260 left. No mortgage, no car payments... 260 a month left from that scenario. I could buy 5 computers in installment plans on that kind of cash... Put the damn things on lay-away at k-mart or whatever. If they want a computer they can get one. But they don't need one. If their kids need to use a computer, or want to, give them 3 dollars and send them to the library.
-Eating twice a week (yes, week) -Wondering if you will have to move under the bridge next month for lack of rent money -parents and child going without
These people DON'T NEED COMPUTERS!!!!! They have absolutely no need to own a computer. The electrical usage would be enough to bankrupt someone who eats twice a week, 17$ a month would cripple their income. Since it only takes 8$ to feed a family of 4 for 2 or 3 days these people must be making like 20 cents an hour!
And for those of you who have never had to buy things on your own: Kool-Aid: 10 packs for $.25 --- Must add water. Bread: $1.29 per loaf of decent quality bread, $.79 for lower quality bread. Sandwhich Meat of any kind: $2.00 for enough for 20 sandwhiches or so. Mayonaise, Mustard, Cheese: About 4$.
If you can't scrape together this much cash you definately aren't going to benefit from a computer.
I Said: If you barely make 10,000 a year or are on welfare then DON'T HAVE KIDS damnit... It's not that damn hard
Troll boy said: damn, your stupid. you can't get on welfare if you don't *already* have kids. I don't know why people feel that they should form opinions when there obviosly stupid... of cource, they are probably to stupid to figure that out on there own.....
Let me rephrase,
If you barely make 10,000 a year or are on welfare then DON'T HAVE MORE KIDS damnit... It's not that damn hard.
I find what you just said to be Obscene, I recommend that it be moderated down to -5 with the reason of 'Obscene Material as rated by 1 person'.
Oh wait, I forgot, I don't dictate to the rest of the world what is and is not obscene. I find nothing wrong with nudity of any kind. Clothing should be for physical protection and comfort, not because you are afraid of someone else seeing you naked. I think sex is a little more private and should be kept between the participants, but that's just MY opinion, so I can't force that on anyone else. If obscene was clearly defined in those obscenity laws as 'Any picture or reproduction containing a nude body' then maybe that would be better. Of course, what if a breast cancer website has a naked breast on it for legitimate reasons? Who decides what is actually obscene?
I'm 19 years old, I have no credit. If I walk into bestbuy or compusa with a big handful of 50 dollar bills why are they going to check my credit? It's not that hard to amass a little cash.
I'm in total agreement. I don't see why so many people see Elitism as a BAD thing. Why shouldn't we skim the intellectuals off of the top of society and flush the garbage? Do we really want a bunch of hopelessly stupid or unmotivated people, regardless of race, to be propogating on our planet? I swear to you that if you are 16+ you can find a job. It might be 20 hours a week at McDonalds, but that will buy you a workable computer after a month or two.
*Subject change*
I realize that at one time Racism was a large problem, my Grandfather probably seriously oppressed some black kids grandfather. Does that mean I owe that kid something? No! Does society owe him something? NO! Does my grandfather owe him something? NO!! Racism is dead. The only thing keeping it alive is government programs to keep people aware of Race. Why do we think about race at all? It doesn't mean anything. But, people are NOT equal. I'm not equal to everyone who posts here, no individual is equal to any other individual. We should all be given an equal CHANCE. If I want to educate myself more than the kid down the road then I'm going to do better than he does. If he happens to be hispanic then why would that make a difference? Are we supposed to give preference to stupid minorities while still letting stupid white people get shafted? Social darwinism says let the stupid people DIE!
Depends on how you define 'Truly poor' my parents had a combined income of about 20 thousand a year while me and my brother were growing up. My parents got married right out of highschool, well, after my dad dropped out... He got his GED, and got into construction work. We had a WHOLE lot of money trouble, but we got by. by the time I was 7 or 8 we had managed to build our own home and moved out of the tiny little trailer we were living in. Around 13 or 14 we bought a 8088 computer. We proceeded to learn everything we could about it, it cost about 150$. We upgraded it to a 486 33, then a 100 then a 166. Now, because my parents spent 150$ on that computer instead of Cable TV or a beer I make 27 thousand a year at 19. Believe me, if you can't afford kids don't have them, if you DO have kids then either make the sacrifices neccesary to give them the right chance at life or give them to someone who will. If you barely make 10,000 a year or are on welfare then DON'T HAVE KIDS damnit... It's not that damn hard...
I'm forced to very much agree with this position. Since when has anyone gone out of their way to stop any minority from gaining internet access? It's not MY fault if someone chooses not to buy a computer or learn how to use it. If the minority family is making an equal amount of money then why don't they purchase a computer? It seems as if they don't wish to own one. If they don't WANT to own a computer are we supposed to force them to? Why? Should my tax dollars be used to further their education or entertainment? It's bad enough that I'm paying for cable TV for 3 welfare families every paycheck, do I now have to pay for their 'net access too? And if so is it ok to just give them 33.6 or 56k modems or do I have to pay for Cable modems? T1s? Why don't we just let everyone work and pay for their own stuff. If some PRIVATE sector group wants to donate computers to poor people that's fine. As long as I'm not forced to pay for it.
I really do have a problem with the way the US government wants the people who work their asses off for their money to pay for everyone else to have stuff.
Kintanon plans on not filing income tax as his income is legally a Wage and Wages aren't taxable under the US tax laws.
America will always have a gun problem, because it's legal to own the damn things. Here it isn't. It doesn't stop criminals using guns just the same as making drugs illegal hasn't stopped drug taking. You're looking at it from the wrong angle.
Are you insane? Making Guns illegal just means that that criminal with the snub nosed 45 can terrorize 50 people with no thought of retribution. There are several places (Kennesaw Georgia for one) where it is required by law that every household own a firearm, they have a crimerate of less that 1%. Firearm ownership has no bearing on crimerate. I don't see why I, as a tax paying law abiding citizen should not own a Remington 350 magnum and sleep with it loaded on my bedstand in case someone decides he wants to rob my house. Can you honestly say that making gun ownership illegal would stop criminals from obtaining guns? Can you honestly say that you think law abiding citizens should not own firearms?
I am in the Army myself, so this topic hits home for me. There is no way in hell that the thousands of military members would attack their own country. It just wouldn't happen. Even if foreign troops were brought in, how far do you think they would get? The united states is not like europe, A LOT more people have weapons here, not just the military. The military along with any civilians defending their homes would be a very tough defense. Unless you are not willing to fight, which would greatly reduce your odds of survival. The real thing to look out for is gun control and similar laws. One of the first things Hitler did was to confiscate all firearms.
Define "Attack". Is "Attacking your own country" opening fire on the confused and angry mob that is throwing stones and stuff at the troops because they THINK they are being attacked? Is it opening fire on the looters who are trashing the local Best buy for free TVs? Is it rounding up everyone and keeping them in one place for their own "protection"? Which one of those would you refuse to do if ordered to? Who needs foreign troops when you can convince your own troops that they are saving the citizens from themselves.
Don't think the government doesn't know that... the Treasury Dept. is printing money like crazy to help cover the rush, and there's always a possibility of a bank holiday to force the idiots to keep their money in the bank.
I for one am going to proudly keep my money in the bank (as if I had enough to really worry about anyway:)
Can we say "Hyper Inflation"?? That could cause as many problems as a bank collapse. Wouldn't you just love a mexican economy, go to the market for bread in the morning because it will be more expensive if you go in the afternoon....
Printing more money is NOT the answer to this problem. I'm all for letting everything go to Anarchy, I'll be spending new years with my girlfriend and my family in Georgia, in the woods, with our Garden, our well, and our hydroelectric generators.
And before 1949, of course, our government had perfect respect for the liberty of its citizens. Just ask anybody who, in those days, was: trying to organize a union African-American Japanese-American and living in California female and aspiring to work in a primarily male profession gay
I was only referring to this particular portion of our nations laws. I in no way implied our government was wonderful and benign before that time. There have always been horrible problems with government in general by its very nature. If you wish to deiscuss labor or racial laws and policies before 1950 we can do that somewhere else.
These laws have been around for a very very very long time under certain disaster laws enacted around 50 years ago, about the same time the gold standard was removed and welfare was created.
Also, for those of us who are economists you should know that it only takes 2% of the people how have cash in the banks withdrawing that cash to cause our banking system to collapse. There is FAR FAR more money in the world than actual currency. So if 2% of the population decides to be on the safe side and pull their cash out of the Stock Market and Banks, then we have an economic collapse.
Also, these "fringe" people aren't going to be reacting to the problems, they are going to be causing them. A lot of people believe that Y2K is going to be the end of the world, a huge disaster, or something very very close. So they are going to go crazy on new years eve and cause a lot of the problems they fear. Can you imagine having a few hundred thousand people in each city who are primed for the end of the world, and the power goes off for 45 minutes because of an ice storm or something? Or the power goes down for an hour because of some obscure Y2K problem... anything could be enough to turn those people into a raging paranoid mob bent on looting and burning the city. That sort of situation would easily convince me to delcare martial law if I were president, and with everything working so much more efficiently without Congress, well... why bother to lift it? Just boot congress and get a REAL "government" going!
What I'm talking about isn't exactly far fetched if you know a little bit about human nature, and if you have ever worked in phone tech-support you know how paranoid the average idiot is if something he/she doesn't understand happens.
If I could program this is what I'd love to create, maybe someone else will grab the idea and do it for me:
Win95esque look except for a few things, put a Dos/Linux like command line across the bottom of the screen instead of that bloody taskbar, or on top of the taskbar, or something. And not that stupid address thing that you can put down there in win98. I mean a REAL CLI. Link the CLI directly to the GUI and make the CLI smarter, so it I type 'open opera' it will open opera in the GUI area, I can then poke around on Opera with my mouse, or I can type 'Open Quake2' and then Alt-tab switch, or mouse switch between them, or run the at half size next to each other. Equally, if I type LS or Dir in the CLI it will pop up a window that lists the contents of the current directory, if I type cd \usr\fred it will switch to that directory and display the contents. Of course, I want it to be able to run every app I can think of. I want to be able to use exclusively the mouse, or exclusively the KB without losing any functionality. And I want it to be easy to install and configure, easy to add hardware and software, and I want it to be stable. If an error occurs I want it to tell me exactly what the problem is, not just 'FileX doesn't work'. Is this too much to ask?!!? If anyone knows of an OS/GUI that does that already, or wants to create one and send it to me let me know at sleffer@hotmail.com or sleffer@home.com
Linux IS a far cry from the "Feature-rich Windows 2000" to the average person. How many people can install windows and go directly to 99% of the applications on their system? How many can do the same for Linux?
Linux HAS gained in the server OS market.
It HAS grown quickly in the last year or so. a few years ago the only people who knew of linux were the people who used it.
Linux CAN be a legitimate competitor to Win2000, if linux is made more accesible to the average joe.
"Widely accepted" is relative and could be a legitimate nitpick.
The average user will be using Win2k eventually. Unless Linux starts looking prettier, and acting prettier, and feeling prettier. Linux just isn't pretty enough for the average user. Oh, and my Linux rant is that it's a B***H to install!

:)
I for one am going to proudly keep my money in the bank (as if I had enough to really worry about anyway

Just ask anybody who, in those days, was:
trying to organize a union
African-American
Japanese-American and living in California
female and aspiring to work in a primarily male profession
gay

If anyone knows of an OS/GUI that does that already, or wants to create one and send it to me let me know at
sleffer@hotmail.com
or

Hmmm... with good enough technology you could slap a camera on the side or top of the thing and see the whole world at 30fps in 800x600....
Could you further explain your nitpicks?
