There has been a program (xfree86setup, and to go with XORG, xorgsetup) that probes your video card and monitor to use the "correct" drivers to run X. I'm not sure whether or not it is compiled into the package, but I believe it has been in there since 8.1 (9.0 at least).
However, AMD CPUs on VIA chipsets are one probable culprit.
I don't believe that is true as my AMD, a 2700 running on a KT333 VIA Chipset ran for a solid 6 weeks. Doing such things as using 3DMax Studio and Photoshop and gaming. The only thing that killed it was the wrong power switch was flicked off.
"...it automagically configured my X server..."

Strangely enough, it doesn't seem to have any bugs!
The return of Goatse
I find they only really "dominate" in with 64 bit architexture with their Opteron, but again, Intel hasn't yet released their own "desktop" 64bit cpu.
Intel (as far as I know) are trying to increase cpu speed and reduce the die (or the cpu) size.
