If microsoft developed sw that worked w/ older computers they would see a major hit in sales of new computers, but as long as they continued making new versions incompatible with old versions, they would still force the sales of just as many sw units.

MP3 is a fine (although plenty inferior to other codecs *cough* ogg *cough*) format for storing masses of music on a computer or pocket sized player, in order to play them back on some cheap headphones, but the low sound quality would never permit it to *replace* the CD, even if MicroF***, the record industry and God went into a joint venture to make it happen. The succsessor of the CD has to lie in optical media, preferably a format allowing greater storage than a DVD, or at least a smaller disk with DVD capacity, perhaps even dual layer. Mini players like, todays MP3 players, will only be viable as the primary method of music distribution when data storage becomes so cheap, and audio recording becomes so good, that you can listen to 4000 songs, in perfect quaility (as in no human detectable difference from live) sound or your iPod.
