"Then there is hte fact that firewire support is OFF by default -- comeon, this is NOT a new technology -- I have to recompile the kernel to use my external firewire drive? That's very disappointing."

What's really disappointing is that it's broken up-stream. What would you rather have -- a system with Firewire support on that won't boot, or a system that boots and lets you point the gun at your own foot by enabling Firewire after the fact?

"The principle of the thing"? Which principle is that? Not including any non-FOSS software in the Core? Why is that a bad thing?

Build quality my eye... http://www.thinksecret.com/news/g5noise.html .

The only reason I don't own a Mac is because I know where every single thing inside my PC came from and when trouble occurs I can pin-point what to fix pretty quickly.

PS: I tried PearPC on an Athlon XP 1800+ with 1GB of RAM and OS X didn't so much run as crawl. It might be usable... if you take a bottle of Quaaludes first.

Argh! OK, I posted this comment before reading the second page (their servers were Slashdotted or just being piggy). He does go on to mention the gconf-editor option.

However, he *does not* mention the fact that you can right-click on "Computer", choose "Browse Folder", and get a browser-style window. One right-click. Seems pretty easy to me!

  5. Petreley Lied. Or He's Just Ignorant on Nicholas Petreley Slams Gnome · · Score: 1

His article says, in part: "But it turns out there is no preference setting that tells Nautilus to use a single window to browse folders." That's untrue. He's either lying or just incompetent. Probably the latter, tho with the amount of vitriol he dumps on GNOME, I'm not so sure. Anyway, Petreley, if you're reading this, or for anyone else who doesn't like the spatial Nautilus, just invoke gconf-editor, browse to apps->nautilus->preferences and set "always use browser" to true. By the way, GNOME != Nautilus. A major pet peeve of mine. If you hate Nautilus, use Konqueror or some other file manager. There are only a dozen or so good ones...

What kind of a comparison is that? You've compared YaST to Anaconda, and nothing else. You never even USED Fedora Core. The installer is just one package in a multitude. Your problem could probably have been fixed with a quick visit to fedora-list@redhat.com or http://bugzilla.redhat.com/ . Linux helps those who help themselves.

Do more reasearch into Fedora Core before dismissing it as "unstable".

But the standards compliant one works *great* in Web Pro 3.0. It renders better than the current main page (no horizontal scroll bars), and IIRC looks better than the Palm-specific page currently there (I can't get it to come up right now for some reason).
