Because QBASIC comes free with DOS and Windows. PowerBasic costs $$$. Also, back when I was learning how to program, long before the Internet became widely available, this was the only thing available to me.

Should C++ compiler vendors have waited until there was a C++ standard before selling C++ compilers? Sure there were inconsistencies between compilers, but everything seemed to go fairly well.
With hardware, interoperability is a bit more important, but that's what firmware updates are for!

Fortunately, Ambrosia Software is porting Escape Velocity Nova to Windows so a wider audience can enjoy it as well. I look forward to being able to play it on my computer at home instead of having to find someone with a Mac.
