Instead of a bunch of kool effects I would be much more interested to see a *true* 3D desktop as a finite 3D space modeled after the real world...
For example, imagine a set of virtual "rooms" each one is dedicated to a specific task. You have an internet room where each wall works kinda like a tab in firefox... or file room that looks like a library.. possibilities are endless.
And this can be done, we already have seen this in Doom:)
The fact is that probably 9 of 10 MS users just do not care. 9 of 10 windows users are just, well, - just users. Two-thirds of InternetWeek readers may be willing to switch but does this number really mean anything? I'm afraid it doesn't. And I'm afraid MS knows about this.
Most people use computer just as a tool. Just as an example - I have a friend who is a designer. He loves his job and he's forced to use computers but hates them. He dials-up to internet without any firewall; he's PC probably is infected with all kinds of shit and was rooted long time ago... but as long as it works - he doesn't care.
As it stands now, there is no future for Linux in Russia. Two main reasons for this are:
Desktop is taken by MS. Contrary to other countries, there is no reason to switch to Linux to save money because Linux and WinXP costs the same - about $3. You can buy pirated XP and almost any Windows software and development tools for the same cost - about 100 rubels - everywhere. What works for Linux in eastern countries doesnt work in Russia.
Servers are taken by FreeBSD. Ask any russian sysadmin and you will hear that Linux sucks on server side. Almost all major ISPs and hosting companies are running *BSD.
There is some tuny amount of commercial Linux development coming from outsources projects, mainly in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
The unfortunate truth is that IBM opens this center to push IBM hardware not Linux in Russia. Russia has always been a Sun land and IBM realises this.
Yesterday, North Korea has switched all their 7 PCs to RedHat Linux. That makes them second MS-free economy in the world (first was, of course, The Principality of Sealand. Film at 11
So if you forget to lock a window in your home, and a burglar comes in and steals your stuff, and the burglar gets caught, YOU should be prosecuted for burglary for leaving the window open?
Yes. If YOU forget to lock windows in YOUR house, YOU will be guilty.
That's why you're locking your windows in the first place, right?
Actually, Parallax was doing this since what... 1992? They got TCP/IP stack for their BasicStamps too.
But of course, their stuff runs a bit faster than 1MHz...:)
The most irritating (and IMHO most damaging to OSS) thing is that so far OSS produces only clones or varying quality. GIMP, OpenOffice, Mono etc are trying to re-implement and imitate functionality of their commercial analogs.
This is a chase for ever changing target, and obviously it is doomed to fail.
We need more original software... more original ideas..

You do not know what you are talking about. Just try to design 3kW hifi audio amp and see what will be cheaper...

They *are* out.
Sealand is located 7 nautical miles off the coast. That is what allowed them to proclaim independence in 1967.
Yes

There's always *BSD.
