"Now that hybrids and electrics are really on the road we can't use the assumption that cars pay for road maintenance with fuel taxes."
Electrics? Do you know ANYONE with an electric car? Give me a break! And hybrids use gas, just because it's 40mpg instead of 15 doesn't mean they're dodging gas taxes.
This is the sky-is-falling argument and it's just one more thing the middle-class and working poor will get screwed on while welfare recipients will NOT HAVE TO PAY THE TAX because they don't pay taxes now.
Ah but doctors and nurses have to be approved by the state licensing boards and none of them recognize foreign degrees, while engineers and programmers are not licensed by any governing board and any 4 year university is sufficient. So why does it seem like their are so many foreign doctors? They didn't graduate from the University of Dubai, they actually came to the US and studied for 8 years to get their PhD which is fine by me.
I'd say he's qualified. I don't understand why parent automatically assumed he was just an informant. If you're a private detective and with PhD in Criminal Forensics and you see a felony take place wouldn't you call the police? Would/. then assume you're simply an informant instead of being the private detective that the article correctly identified you as being?
This professor hit the nail on the head, what American would want to work in technology after this video from US attorneys explaining how NOT to hire Americans for IT jobs? Here's the full video. And how much jail time did these attorneys get for sending millions of jobs overseas? None.
This is why I left CS. Videos like this and the job market full of fake job ads with fake software you MUST know how to use in order to be hired because companies have to run XX# of job ads in order to get H-1B visas to hire foreign workers. Couldn't find an IT American that knows Windows 10.3 and Microsoft Office Turbo Edition? Then here's your H1B visa's, hire some foreign programmers.
I went back to school and now I'm in the medical field, hopefully they don't start giving visas out to doctors.... aw crap
I use to work for.... big hosting company. We were constantly getting calls about problems with https, especially people who bought their https from another company. Most of the problems were people not filling out the information correctly causing the https not to resolve or the other company not communicating with us properly. It's also just another thing to remember to renew every year.
Every year on a cellphone is like 4 on a desktop, so a 3 yr old phone is like a 12 yr old desktop. I'm shocked my two yr old 3GS runs as many apps as it does, if I had a two yr old Droid I'd be SOL
Why is it that when someone likes something they are automatically labelled a fanboy? It use to mean someone that supported a product without listening to reason, but the term has degraded to the point that I'm now a fanboy of pizza apparently.
I like the iPhone but I know it has some flaws, guess I'm a fanboy.
Reason we don't see clones is because Apple stomped all over the mp3 player market despite competitors offering more memory for a lower price. Apple has 73% of MP3 player sales. Closest competitor is SanDisk with 9%. No wonder everyone's scared to buck-up against Apple. Even Droid is barely keeping up with iPhones and Droids are free. To stay competitive with Apple your product has to be free! How can anyone compete with that?
"I bet shoplifting is driven by high prices as well."
Nope: "over 50% of apprehended adults were educated professionals and financially secure. " Adjustment disorder "is a type of mental disorder resulting from maladaptive, or unhealthy, responses to stressful or psychologically distressing life events." Most of the people that steal don't do it because they can't afford it, it's the cheap thrill and excitement of breaking the law.
I think the survey was a good idea, you can't solve a problem without studying it.
" It doesn't seem fair to pay more "because you can.""
So who should pay? Obviously game developers can't live on $1 a game, so if games were $1 everywhere there would no longer be any multi-million dollar games like Starcraft II. How many billions would Microsoft lose if Windows and Office all sold for $1? Would anyone bother learning programming knowing that you can't make a living?
"The fact that 10% of the U.S. Population makes almost 90% of the wealth and the other 90% makes only 10% "
No one cares. As long as that 90% can live the American dream: white picket fence, 2 car garage, 2.3 kids, etc. They don't care if the garage houses a Camry or a Lambo, long as they can live their lives, they're happy with 10%.
Problem is with 10+% unemployment and another 20+% underemployment you now have 30% of the population that can't live the american dream. If this trend continues to increase we'll see Egypt in front of the White House.
Great. I know someone with a MBA from UofP... from 4 years ago. They still can't get a better job then cashier.
You got lucky, and thankfully now that you can put network admin on a resume UofP doesn't matter, you have a bachelors and experience which is all HR cares about.

Are we losing $$$$ on the gas tax? Has income generated from gas taxes gone down significantly over the past 10 years? The gas tax only makes $25 billion a year. Welfare costs $888 billion a year. Cut welfare and we don't need a tax on vehicle miles traveled.
last I checked the gov't PAYS for sex: every kid a welfare mom has she receives MORE money
Welfare costs more per year than the ENTIRE Iraq war, $888 BILLION a year on welfare vs $622 billion for the iraq war
There are people that have been on welfare for 50+ years and refuse to work and they have children doing the same thing.
""I tried it for a year..you know...working and all. It's not anything I would want to go through again, or wish on anyone in my family, but I am damn proud of that year." "
Welfare needs to stop, it is killing our country. A year, maybe 2, and that's it, no more welfare.
AHHH I've been Rebecca Roll'd
this makes it better
It's Holy Spirit. Holy Ghost is from Old English gast, "spirit"
If your Catholics are saying Ghost they're doing it wrong, my Catholics say Spirit

You're really joking right? more and more
Lawyer's have is worse than IT!
"The stigma of being a "confidential informant" is quite hazardous. Why do you think there's a Witness Protection Program?"
/. then assume you're simply an informant instead of being the private detective that the article correctly identified you as being?
But... he is a security researcher, here's his security websites and his LinkedIn says he has a PhD in Computer Science and works at the Mississippi State University Center for Computer Security Research (CCSR).

from Monday: Why Doesn't Every Website Use HTTPS? "HTTPS is more secure, so why isn't the Web using it?"
Oh Irony!
"first grade was great today..."
"Teachers get a large fraction of their pay in the form of health care and pension benefits...."
And days off. With 3 months off in the summer, 2-3 weeks in the winter and another week off for spring break teachers only work 75% of the year.
"Americans just aren't interested in Science and Technology whatsoever."
How was this marked Insightful on Slashdot?

And they will destroy themselves. How long will 2 billion people live under such oppression?
link to the original article instead of the... um, "slightly" biased blog
Good.

"Because the iPad is significantly thinner and somewhat lighter. "
You mean the 4.6mm (3/16") difference and the whopping 79 grams (2.8 ounces) loss? Who cares? No one thinks "Gee, I would buy this laptop/computer/screen/etc, but it weighs 2.8 ounces too much". This isn't a cellphone or something where an ounce or 1/4" can make a big difference, it's a tablet.

Is it cheap? The iPad is a 9.7" touchscreen with 16gb for $400. I can buy a 10.1" 1.6ghz Atom netbook with 1gb RAM and 250gb hard drive for $250. And no, Best Buy isn't running a crazy special, Amazon has two different models of netbooks for ~$250 brand new.
True, the iPad has a touchscreen and those cost a bit, but the netbook has a lot more parts and the cost of a Windows 7 license.
I'm trying to figure out why we're not being flooded by $200 iPad clones.
