  1. Compatibility and support on Microsoft Hyper-V Leaves Linux Out In The Cold · · Score: 2, Interesting

there's a difference. folks, the listed OS's are supported by MSFT...ie, you can call them up for support. there's a difference. The other OS's operate just fine in many cases. They just haven't gone through qualification and you can't call MSFT for help. umm, how many folks out there run apps that currently aren't "supported" on VMware and Xen?

  2. Comments and availability. on The DS Lite U.S. Launch · · Score: 1

I picked one up in Cambridge MA @ Best Buy about 12:30pm yesterday. I asked and they still had several left. They were running a special to get a free copy of brain age with a DS lite purchase (coupon to print out on Bestbuy's front page). I bought a DS Fat w/ a copy of mario kart days before the DS lite announcement. When I heard about this I decided to just return the DS fat and hold on to Mario Kart till the DS lite came out. Definitely worth waiting. I'm 30 and this is a much more "adult" looking unit. It's all of the things you've probably already read (blah better screen, blah sleek, blah). I really like the feel of it (for some reason, the DS Fat left my hands sore after about 30 minutes of playing). I have a PSP and a copy of Syphon filter (dell had a special @ one point where it was $160 so I picked it up on a whim). It's going on eBay. It's probably a decent system, but I just don't want that complexity. It's more than I want/need. I played new SMB, what a blast. love it.

  3. Sony is blinded by arrogance. Nintendo will rise. on PS3 to Sell at Over $800 in UK · · Score: 1

I really can't believe the stupidity and arrogance of the Sony folks here. I was a PS1 and PS2 buyer, always assuming that it was an absolute given I'd buy a PS3, like as soon as it came out. I make a very decent living...but after 1) the pricing release 2) Wii's strong showing at E3...I simply can't justify this purchase. I don't want to be @ss-raped for a format that really just might not catch on. Sony assumes they have the golden touch..and the people will come. and I believed sony would come out with a rockin product..I believe both to be wrong. Nintendo has captured valuable mind share with the DS (and DS lite). The DS's success over the PSP has shown gamer's willingness to just get good games with a less powerful system for a more reasonable price. This halo effect will carry over to the console side. It's not entirely dissimilar to Apple's iPod strategy.

  4. Specs are what I'd expect. on Microsoft Releases Vista Hardware Requirements · · Score: 1

Both OS X and WinXp don't run well at all with 256Mb. 512Mb is the minimum I spec out a machine with. OS X sees a big jump in performance at 512Mb and XP, once AV, antispyware et al are loaded, usually sits at 256Mb used, and that's before you open a program. A lot of Mac users (G4 mac minis, most iBooks among the few) are locked out of the spiffy core image graphics (or whatever it's called, I haven't had a coffee yet) that came with Tiger...so I'm not surprised about the steep graphics requirements for the spiffy graphics. And the steep hard drive space req's are just for all the patches and service packs...

  6. Glad they dropped the price but... on DS Lite Price, Launch Date Announced · · Score: 1, Offtopic

One can obtain a PSP for $160 by catching a special with Dell. PSP homebrew doesn't require more than a memory card and GTA (in some cases)And with only a little effort you can fill a memory card up with ripped DVD's... but I do like the DS games better (Mario Kart, Advance Wars, Metroid Prime...). DS lites are going to fly off the shelves. Gamers could win big as this will hopefully put some downward pressure on PSP games. I refuse to pay $50 for some of their titles.

  7. The risk greatly outweighed the reward on The 360 Is Too Cheap? · · Score: 1

Sure, MS could have squeezed some more $$ during that initial run..but the risk of having the units sit on the shelves was huge. that's an armchair quarterback statement. It could have negated the impact of a new console release. You're talking about risking throwing away years of big $$ for the chance to make a few extra bucks per unit (this is a millions to billions argument). The goal is to get as many out there ASAP in front of the others to get a foothold..and reap the benefits down the road. MS's failure here was their inability to get their supply chain in order to meet demand.

  8. In baseball... on Apple Switched Chips Too Soon? · · Score: 1

...teams always value player performing well now over a prospect. Someone who might show all the signs of being the next Mickey Mantle could never leave the minor leagues. Apple didn't jump the gun, they traded their prospect for a proven player.

  9. Evaporating music collections... on Burned CDs Last 5 years Max -- Use Tape? · · Score: 1

how many music collections comprised of CD-R's will be going. Whether they're backups of their own or burned copies of other's CDs, some people's music collections are going to start shrinking...much to the record companies' delight. Not everyone stores music on their computers. Was the limited lifespan of CD-R's a design consideration or a flaw?
