I'm thinking that the RIAA found a new expert to listen to. This move makes perfect sense given their earlier failed attempts to curtail swapping.
They were successful in slapping down Napster, only to watch the tunes reappear under Morpheus, and then KaZaa (sorry, winbox here).
This is far from a 'last ditch effort' - this is the RIAA working from experience. Target the largest of those who make these works accessible. Sue the crap out of them and move to the next largest of the group. Repeat as necessary.
Winning the suit isn't necessary, the litigation should suffice. Who among the sharing community has the cash to mount a defense against the RIAA?
Secondly, I have the following to offer. What is wrong with having a rating system for games?
I am an adult that happens to enjoy playing computer games and I welcome the opportunity to experience games that are slanted towards my demographic.
I don't want to become embroiled in the Bill of Rights question-and-answer debate, I can't pretend to be a shepard of the younger generation, and I won't become a guidance councelor - apologizing for the industry for games created for a more adult audience.
I believe that a ratings system could possibly bring a thriving industry into something known as the computer age.
I'm an American, and I'm sorry for that. I'm sorry that I'm still alive, I'm sorry that I still drive an internal-combustion automobile, I'm sorry that I still pay my taxes. Busted, my bad.
I work for one of the evil lackies that found their way to Somalia by way of the American military, and I have to say, this guy looks human. 2 eyes, 2 ears, 1 giant pain in my ass.
Is this movie about that day or about the politics that inspired that day? There is a world of difference in that comparison. Maybe we should start damning the dead for their involvement in a situation they never defined. Would that work? Perhaps we should deny survivor benefits to those killed in unpopular incursions.
Maybe we should just roll-over and let the historians decide what & when was right. God love those who can examine the past as they are blessed with the obvious gift of being able to rationalize the decisions of others made in a time of crisis.
In what "group" do your union officials sit? The poor, middleclass, or "well-to-do"?
In my circumstance, the union officials sit in the same group as I do. I'm speaking primarily about stewards & chief-stewards - I have no contact with those higher than that role.
And shouldn't people have the choice to join a union?
Absolutely. I work at a closed-shop, we all pay a percentage of our earnings to work there. Some pay union dues, others pay an agency fee. It all works out the same, the non-union employees are afforded the exact same benefits as the union folk.
As an "unofficial" tech worker, I am upset that I have to deal with the union re: raises - in fact, I haven't had a raise in several years (not counting the cost-of-living BS that my union manages to wrestle from management every 4-5 years).
I work at a university and have been in 2 unions in my 15 year experience there. I've worked my way from janitor to system admin plus. And yet I was offered absolutely no assistance from my union(s). In fact, I was attacked by 1 union for trying to advance myself through tech ability.
Am I bitter? Sometimes. I troubleshoot their PCs, I install/maintain their CMMS systems, I write their reports (& then have to run them), I create their web presence (including cgi), I am a help desk, I train, I analyze, I code, and I also perform the job I was hired to do.
All this and yet I'm paid less than a parts-chaser. Wow, looks like I'm extremely bitter.
Logging in from the non-religious zealot side of things here...
I'm not about to mention the morality of genetic modification as I have no concrete opinion on the subject. I can see both good & bad in the idea.
What I would like to comment on is your premise that it is somehow a right for an individual to alter the chromosomes of another. Last time I checked, an embryo/sperm-egg pairing was completely unaware of it's rights under whatever government model it happened to inhabit.
I don't pretend to inpress my opinion on others, but if this tech had been available in the '60s & my parents had decided to alter me so that I had webbed fingers, a flat head & red, white & blue fingertips, I'd have been seriously pissed.
Extreme? Yes. But you state 'MY body, MY right', but what do you do when the altering of your body alters subsequent generations?
Two countries pointing fingers, two countries completly divided by ideology, two countries that could transform the planet into a charcoal briquette.
And? Where's the interest? Where's the dilemna? Neither of these two super-powers are stupid enough to let this incident escalate into war.
Both countries will work towards resolution in one form or another. My prediction - the US will not offer a complete apology & China will not demand one.
This entire situation is pure posturing bullshit. Let the news media from each country spew whatever crap they choose, I'm not listening.
I thought that the whole issue was in regard to 'predatory practice'. The notion that MS was able to effectively shut down PC-retailers when the PC-retailer opted to offer an OS that wasn't from MS.
I know I'm usually out of it, but, did I miss something?
Maybe we could find a way for Nike to bring production back to the US - and maybe we could find a way for your child to construct these shoes with your YOUR name on them. Sound good?
Nike is doing good? C'mon... They are doing nothing more than any out-sourced US corp who is maximizing shareholder & company profit by moving production to an economically-deprived labor pool.
You want to volunteer on frontline production? I dare you.
What exactly is a 'sweatshop'? It's a factory, often located in a third-world country, where young employees work long hours producing consumer goods.
Young employees == children. How did you spend your childhood?
if you were a starving Vietnamese kid, you'd probably be pretty grateful that someone would offer you a job and allow you to work enough hours to be able to support your family.
Thats the whole point - corporations move production to economicly stagnant locals so that they can offer diminished wages to an eager populace. But don't believe that the corps are doing this out of their collective goodness. The bottom line of any corporation is profit. Nike doesn't sell shoes, Nike makes money selling shoes.
Not only that, but the inexpensive labor cuts down on the cost to the consumer and helps keep Nike running shoes affordable for all of us.
You expect me to believe that the material & labor cost of any Nike shoe is close to their market value?
Nike is making a killing on every pair of shoes they sell - and an even bigger killing since they moved production to the third-world.
Is there anybody here who would place themselves into the realm of the public? We speak of these people as if they are cattle in need of fences. You took a course - good for you. You think education is the answer - again, congradulations.
The fact of the matter is that these nuke sites are run by/administerd by people. People who are the same people that I work with. People who care/don't care - People who work towards perfection/slack - People in charge/empowered.
People make mistakes...
Do you trust all people based upon a high school/college film? I don't.
And I would be proud to consider myself a part of that dumbass collection of ditch-diggers known as the public.

I can live with others deciding this issue - I made a decision long ago not to get involved with the abortion decision.
But I have to ask, what's with all the banner ads on the mentioned site (lancasterlife.com/NurembergFiles/).
Advertising seems to knows no boundaries.
