isn't it great to see a/. comment thread where the people aren't flaming each other or shunning someone?:-) i love it
but anyways... i completely agree. its not about numbers anymore. really, it hasn't been about numbers for the past 2 or 3 years once AMD Athlon XP became big. if all the little 12 year olds want to fight over decimals on benchmarks, let them. but when i saw the dual 2.0GHz G5 BLAZING past the dual 3.06GHz Xeon at WWDC, that was enough proof to me. they could show me all the numbers they wanted to, it wouldn't change anything. Cubasis crashed on the Xeon. Logic ran beautifully. Photoshop COMPLETELY blew the Xeon away, by a matter of minutes, while the G5 finished in, what, maybe a minute? And mathmatica... man, was that crazy. The G5 could have done the Logic, Photoshop, and Mathmatica tests in the time that it took the dual Xeon to do just the Mathmatica. so all you little script kiddies can b*tch at me all you want, but i know what i saw. and what i saw was the fastest desktop in the world. and many others did too, to back me up.
running MacOS X on 64MB of ram is equivalent to running Windows XP on 64MB of ram. it can be done, but why you would want to is beyond me. put OS 8.5 or 9.1 on that box and i'm sure it'll work for ya... i've got a 5500/225 running 9.1 at home with 64MB of ram and don't have a single problem with speed.
i only got Qt/Mac setup in/usr/local/qt by following the install directions. its kinda annoying to compile though, you have to like read the PLATFORMS file for more info. they need to make it simple for people like me that don't like to RTFM. i like./configure, make, and make install.
thank you, god, it's finally here. and, i've already got it set up. but i'm not really concerned with running Konqueror inside MacOS... i love safari. but what i am interested in running is Kate and Konsole, which are IMHO the best text editor and console combination ever. i use Kate for all my development, and currently do it on MacOS inside of the X11, which sucks, because it takes like 5 minutes for the apps to start. hopefully this will make life a lot easier!
i'd like to repeat the specs of the powermac G5 for $2999:
Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5
1GHz frontside bus
512K L2 cache/processor
512MB DDR400 128-bit SDRAM
Expandable to 8GB SDRAM
160GB Serial ATA
SuperDrive
Three PCI-X Slots
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
64MB DDR video memory
56K internal modem
so how does that $630 athlon box compare? give me a break. sure, you save $3000 (if you get an apple 17"LCD with that G5). but a single athlon compared to a dual G5? let alone the other features like serial ata, pci-x, airport extreme, superdrive, etc.

Why is it exactly that people support such a company to such great lengths?
why do people support baseball or football teams to great lengths? because they're winning, or maybe because they're the underdog. either way, they spend money on their tickets, buy merchandise, and tell all their friends about it even though it won't get them anywhere. same concept, in my opinion. (most) mac users love their computers. i love my mac. i support their company, because right now they are the underdog, and have a great product. i tell all my friends about my beautiful powerbook. they see it, love it, and buy one and it gets apple business. what does it get me? nothing. i just love my mac.
oh, and you didn't "put straight" anything. i, and many others like me, still stand beside the "myths" that you're trying to "put straight".
monopoly: Exclusive control by one group of the means of producing or selling a commodity or service.
a monopoly of their own product? freaking duh. what do you expect? for them to throw their company out the window by allowing someone to intrude on their copyrights? okay, sure. they're monopolistic. whatever.
yup, i just bought a 15" 1GHz Superdrive model for $2500 on ebay. coulda bought a new one for $2599. oh well. mine came with a lot of extras, (total value about $3800) so i'm not complaining TOO much.:-)
I have been a mac user for years and their customer support has been very good, until now. I go to buy a 15" powerbook last week and i find out that i am not qualified to receive anything out of AppleCare because i am (a) a student and (b) a resident of Florida. The guy couldn't explain to me why, but thats what he told me. He told me i am unqualified to receive support from apple because i'm a floridian college student. WTF? Does anyone know about this? I thought they had good customer service before. But now i'm not so sure. Why they would say "yeah, we'll give support to this child in new york, or this parent in washington state, but forget those floridian college students"?
maybe on newer machines... but i had one hell of a hard time installing debian 3.0 on a powermac 5500/225. (yellowdog wasn't stable on this machine! maybe they should look into that? although i think it was a problem with BootX.) now, even though i got it loaded up, i still have to ssh in whenever i turn it on and reset the keycodes for the ADB keyboard... it is harder on older machines than new ones. i didn't have a problem on a powermac g4.
i guess you didn't catch the memo that apple doesn't own the music, it just sells it for the record companies. and i assume you don't have the testicular fortitude to post non-AC.
Since when did a BusinessWeek article become official confirmation? Probably, BusinessWeek got their information from rumor posts on MacRumors.com. As well as calling it "official" instead of just official, MacRumors also adds:
No specific executives are quoted, however... so it's unclear from where the information originated.
The PowerPC 970 has been widely rumored and expected to be used in Apple's upcoming Macs, though both IBM and Apple had not made any official announcements about their use.
I use a PowerMac G4 350MHz, 128MB RAM running OS X.2.5 and a 16MB video card (a riva or something similar) and even on this older machine, everything still runs smooth no matter how many programs i have open, and even with other programs running, i can play DVDs flawless too. i don't consider that a problem, especially with the newer machines with faster video cards and more video memory
since we've all been modded -1 anyways, i'll go ahead and explain myself. (this is way, way offtopic lol) i have a very "laissez faire" opinion on the gay matter. i don't agree with it, but i'll let it be as long as they don't mess with me. if they want to be gay, let them be gay. as long as nothing is imposed on me. and yes, i do regard it as moral abomination, but lifestyle is more politically correct. i just dont want to piss anyone off. apparently i pissed off the modders tho, lol
for the love of god, could you be any more flamebait? i know there's free speech and everything, but you don't have to talk about (a) people's lifestyles and (b) the greatest computers on this side of the universe... i mean, come on. that was inappropriate.
not only is this post offtopic, but shows blatant disregard for other factors. that's like saying "i don't know why anyone would want my BMW Z3. it runs slower than most chevy cavaliers, and the chevy cavaliers are a lot cheaper!" when your transmission is bad in your Z3. maybe you f***** up mac os with some rogue tweaks. and, like the other guy replied, mac os 9 does suck compared to X in speed and crash-resistance, that's no question. i currently have a PowerMac G4 350 with 128 MB PC100 RAM running OS X 10.2.5 and it has run more stable, been ten times faster than, and has proven to live longer than its windows counterpart.
Maybe this should have been posted to the Apple section. I had to actually click on the/. logo to see this post! My home page is the apple section, to filter only what i really want to see;-)
another lemming helping to further the apple myths... for the love of god, people. can't you realize that 90% of your arguments against apple either (a) are totally incorect (b) show blatant disregard for current information or (c) are based on your bias against anything the majority of society doesn't like, because of others like you? myths spread like a virus. and, unfortunately, the truth isn't strong enough to break them apart. sorry, but comments like those REALLY make me furious... kinda like when you get pissed off about how fast food workers never get your order right. BTW, this guy had a very well written review of the iTunes Music Store. I tried it today, but couldn't connect. Maybe it was just my ISP...
isn't it cubasis, not Qbase?

last time i checked, both american football and international football (or soccer in america) kick the ball with your feet... it's called punting

if the spammers said that they were white people from great britain or the united states, we'd hate the spammers too. it's nothing about being racist.

About a zillion people wrote to announce Mozilla 0.6
:-)
i guess that was, what, 2-3 years ago? i wonder how many people submitted the story about Firebird 0.6...

scary thing is, that when i read it the first time it made perfect sense to me...
