Did it occur to you that having already implied that he's not white/German (possibly Indian), and that he works in a facility doing some sort of research (possibly a university), and that his professor (most certainly a university) is giving some speech at a conference in Paris has already released too much information to those that might do him further harm (read - so called "authorities") in his neck of the woods?
To give names and specifics would further cement the ability of whatever bureau or employer that was to screw him over completely. He gave you a sample. That's all you need. Go collect more. Stop arguing with his spelling or grammar.
Hey isn't that amazing? My coffee maker boils water too (that's how it gets that steam to make the froth stuff in the milk). And my espresso is boiling hot when it comes out... Guess I'll sue Target for selling me a coffee maker that makes coffee at the "scalding" temperature, after I warn them not to do it again. After all, it should be "hot" but "industry standard hot", not "boiling hot" like water gets in a normal coffee maker. Because obviously, in "the industry standard temperature" water becomes steam at less than boiling temperatures! Only Mac Donalds had non compliant machines that boiled water at scalding/boiling temperatures. Shame on them.
I have difficulty respecting people who make "industry standard temperature" coffee. But maybe my views are slanted because I make it at home, and I made it at home in a third world country for my folks, and it was made without a "coffee machine" (that was something we couldn't get our hands on over there, it was "capitalist contraband"). So we made coffee by filtering a boiling pot of water through a filter containing coffee. We even had to *gasp* GRIND OUR OWN COFFEE!!!
Ever since I was little, I knew that coffee should be hot, and you SHOULD be careful enough not to quaff it without testing it first and that to spill it on your crotch meant PAIN. That was COMMON SENSE! Then again, the common sense of Western schooled individuals must be heavily damaged upon graduation from high school, after all, the USA is the first country where I've found hair dryers that had a "legally required" tag stating "operating hair dryer while bathing, or submerging into water can result in electrical shock, injury and/or death". Is the average user of a hair dryer so completely uneducated, ignorant, or just plain stupid (despite mandatory schooling through at least four to twelve grades' worth) as to not realize the outcome of using one's body as a grounding connector for electrical current (arguments about frequency and intensity can be left for other days)? Are parents not sharing "common sense" anymore? Do people not research what products they buy?
Judging by the warning label on a peanut butter candy, I am pretty sure the answer is no. "This product contains peanuts and has been produced on equipment that regularly processes peanuts and other tree nuts."
Well hot damn. Guess you need that warning to know that a peanut butter candy bar will affect your allergy to peanuts, eh? What's next? Milk labels to tell you that "this product contains Milk, which is a known source of lactose" ???
I actually lost any desire to waste time on pirating or even really purchasing that much "dvd content" years back.
Last DVD I burned or even "decrypted" was Gentoo 7.0 DVD... I even used that verboten technology "bittorent" to download it... aren't I the evil sophtwarez pirat3, eh? (For those of you not in the know, bittorent copies of Gentoo Linux are actually the only way the Gentoo foundation distributes their Linux DVDs.)
The irony is that the government clamped down on any form of usage, preservation, backup or , so I went and bought the books instead, and stopped wasting time with their movies. (I'm in the USA... I think we're ahead on "clampdown", Germany and the UK are only now catching up with the USA in draconian software / copyright law.) All that posturing your parliaments and that European Union did, was only intended to make Americans look worse, but "ya'll" caught up real quick, eh?
Regulation doesn't kill any industry, it merely kills the small players, like you, possibly me... but the big corporations and roaches of the industry are well subsidized and as you well know, regulatory agencies suffer a bit of a syndrome similar to Stockholm syndrome, only in this case, the kidnappers (aka the regulators) fall in love with the kidnapees (the regulated industries) and eventually become their protectors.
EPA did it numerous times, OSHA does it (haven't been to a single construction site where OSHA wasn't screwing the small players and barely calling into question the big players)... FCC does it to this day... SEC does it too... look at all the insider trading that goes "unpunished". Even the big and mighty BATF. Its supposed to regulate Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms used by actual villains, criminals, et al. All it does is screw over the small shops and regular "honest folk", but they have done nothing to stop drunk driving senators from killing civilians (*cough* Ted Kennedy *cough*).
Meanwhile cops are making a common policy of tazing anyone that so much as refuses to submit to interrogation (without the officer either detaining or arresting them). They're also killing or beating up more people, and the media, even video.google.com is pulling the videos within days (sometimes faster than that) from circulation. But videos of Britney's nipples poking through her shirt are the rage.
We've all got some messed up priorities, so regulatory agencies will continue to serve as the "bouncer" at the Abuse Club. They bounce only those who cannot afford the entry fee... everyone else is welcome to abuse us as much as they like.
Try what I do. Turn off the alarm during sex or even plain during after hours, work hours are done, if I'm not on call, they can leave me be. Nothing is so important that they can't leave a voicemail. Family time is family time, no exceptions, unless God him/her self shows up and has a reason to interrupt (and it better be one hell of a burning bush). If a boss or a client can't respect that, there is no point in working for, or with them. Everyone I work for knows my family and my personal life are just that. MINE. I would sooner live in a basement or a shack than let someone other than myself dictate my personal life. My life is relatively spartan anyways, I've cut all the unnecessary stuff out of it, but YMMV. If I can fit my computers, gym stuff and library in a house, its "big enough":)
When I was younger I used to run only a pager, and that also helped out. If they cannot page me, their message is obviously not important enough. If they wasted my pager airtime, it didn't cost me a damn penny anyways:)
You weren't around for the days when port 139 ICMP/Nukes were around?
Every idiot under the sun used to ask (on IRC no less) Win 95/98 users "what's UR IP, yo."
Course running under Red Hat 5.2 at the time was a good laugh... hard to have your system rebooted when the service to receive said malformed packet wasn't present in the first place, and neither was the OS vulnerability. (Having spent hours coming up with a good ipchains ruleset helped keep the rest of the gaming rigs actually RUNNING Windows 95/98 safe behind the firewall:)
Crying? Ahhh, I see, I'm supposed to care about my fellow man? I'm supposed to worry that you people gave up your rights? You really take me for being some kind of bleeding heart? Whenever did I give that impression?
Forcing a religious individual to witness what they dub "sacrilege"? Buddy, you've never been around religious types. I mean the real religious types. They take this shit seriously. When someone literally lives their religion... until something shatters that farce, its life... getting to heaven and avoiding hell are their prime goals and fears. The shit we look at as a farce, to them, its the only purpose of life itself.
You talk about "justice" or "good", but at the same time asking that the same level of treatment be using on "my kind" and "your kind" is "making shit up"... but treating "their kind" that way is "barely the level of a college prank"?
Is the hypocrisy endemic to slashdot, geeks or what? I've yet to find a single "group" to "belong to" because every single one I've found has the same problem. Excessive hypocrisy... treatments are fine when used on others, but total lack of acceptance of equal treatment of those doing the original treatment.
Guess the new rule is "do unto others everything that you would never want them doing unto you." Hot damn that's some messed up "justice".
Flush a book down the toilet... party life... hmmm.... and its all voluntary, like a college kids party life??
Flush a Bible down the toilet while forcing a Christian to watch, or piss on a makeshift Nativity Scene, or do the same with the Torah... or force a Jew to eat Pork.
Set a flaming cross in a black man's yard, have a Neo Nazi march down a Jewish street... a Ku Klux Klan meeting at the local "equal rights" movement...
Is this basically what you're saying is okay and not some form of torment?
Force a Christian or Jewish man or woman to give a blow job to a captor... or to each other at gun point... yep... no torture, all "party life", right?
Party life in college = choice... applied techniques in a prison != choice... someone else chose for you... the only choice you made in that aspect is not using equal or greater force to resist, or at least get away from those who would arrest and torment you. A free man would be tazed or shot until dead before giving up to his would be slave masters. Not many free men in America, or the world at large.
Same thing in the USA, not always cheaper but always better service, better customer support, they all speak the language native to the area (be it english OR spanish OR german OR russian) as well as plain "murken" english. The only thing to remember is that they may actually cost a little bit more at the onset, because they don't have the resources to charge less for installs. They're little mom and pop shops. But they choose their terms and are generally very open about goings on at the ISP.
I was referring more to the age of the contents, rather than the contents themselves. We used to eat every part of a chicken but the intestines where I grew up. But then again, ours was fresh from the coop... not something a city type in America would have any experience with anymore:(
A doctor in upstate New York (who happened to have a carry permit) was issued a "warrant" by the locals, which was served by SWAT... one of the SWAT boys was a bit trigger happy (he was cleared of course) and mistook the doctor reaching into his coat to get his ID with him reaching for his weapon... (which he wasn't even carrying at the time). Shot him dead. The warrant in question?? A warrant in DEBT... no reason for SWAT... whatsoever.
A bouncer at a club in Virginia Beach (I was going to college nearby so I heard about it the day after) was murdered by cops for refusing to surrender his weapon. He had NO reason to surrender his weapon as he was not the one guilty, or the one the cops were there to arrest.
Many other such situations occur that I would be bored reading to you as you will find an equal number of your own reasons to keep buying and drinking the collective Kool Aid.
Also, recall that there is a CONSTITUTION that has this second ammendment, which, by both the writings of those that lobbied for it, and the standing doctrines of the time, can be interpreted as only NOONE will be debarred the USE or possession of arms.
This basically says that these people would be committing high treason against the highest law of this land the moment such a gun prohibition law passes.
As a "citizen" are you ready to do YOUR duty if such a law is passed in your neck of the woods? I doubt it, hence your ignorant comment.
Ok, Now I understand the problem. Well, wake up alice, this isn't wonderland. You live in the real world. And if what you just said is even remotely true, do you understand the amount of people that would have to be lieing to you in order to keep it secrete enough to be effective? I mean you would have to have everyone in the program keeping it a secrete, anyone in the government or military who comes across them keeping it a secrete, what would happen if just one of them told? The jig would be up. So maybe they kill them so they cannot tell, where are all the missing bodies? Why are the soldiers killing them right now and dieing from it too.
Actually it is. The difference is simple. Only person that needs to be in the know in any organization is someone who can direct the flow of information and another scant few to direct the flow of evidence (as in "disappear"). Regular Joes simply feed off the need for power, cash, comfort, safety. You really must have seen too much of the way tyranny perpetuates, if you are still willing to believe that jack booted thugs and their ilk only existed in soviet nations and in nazi germany. Those were trial runs. This here is the real deal. Better equipped, with more experience and "data" as Marxist Hacker would say.
This is visible daily, accountants and some CEO's work together to defraud countless investors in companies, and the masses working there never see it. Enron is a PRIME example.
You don't think it will be used on American civilians sooner or later? Kicking doors in and oppressive military tactics have come back to roost, look at abusive SWAT and cops... tazer usage is going out of hand, being used in the western work to nail kids (when I was a kid we used to get our ears boxed, not blasted with a tazer, and it worked better).
If you're an American, and you hang out at the range, and the local scumbags decide to make that illegal, suddenly, having gone plinking or hunting is a crime... and suddenly, practicing your own rights for your own pleasure, without harming a single other man or woman, can get you shot or raided by the local jack booted thugs, all because some spray sells you out.
I can guarantee they won't catch a single damn terrorist. Terrorists aren't the targets. They spent too much money training the real ones to kill them now.
Go to the range and put a dozen rounds downrange through a semiauto... that'll put enough nitrogen compounds on your hands... I believe the compound they're talking about may well be the same version used in modern gunpowder, but I'll have to check on it later.
What stops you from using encryption? Encrypt all your traffic. Go through a little trouble and some processing and less headaches will be there from snooping, theft, lies, fraud or other crimes committed by those pretending to serve you.
If we used encryption for everything, in all our endeavors, it would be hard for them to declare something mainstream illegal. They tried it with alcohol, remember what happened? Mafia was an example of the free market prevailing, everyone wanted alcohol, and they got it, regardless of whether the government said it was bad, or even ammended the Constitution to ban alcohol... Even after being driven underground, the actual free market prevailed... alcohol remained available, despite ALL of the efforts of the government to deny people to buy and use what it was they desired. Of course, afterwards it was "allowed" again, merely because the state wanted to tax it... and it was allowed to do so, because the masses were just that... ignorant.
Odd... you presume that every individual gets a "tingle on the tongue" from "hot" coffee. For me it just causes numbness and pain. I have yet to sue the coffee maker for making it "hotter than the industry average". Is there an actual temperature you can measure as the EXACT industry average, and then sue anyone that sells it hotter or colder? Who sets the industry average?
Are you also the kind of individual who needs a sign next to a hole in an ice sheet saying "caution, water is freezing cold, thus much colder than the industry average of holes in the ice" to keep you from diving in?
Are you aware that at liquid nitrogen temperatures, that ice cream would be a solid block of ice due to the impurities in it and it would be VERY hard to serve without an industrial grade cutting tool?
Lets get real, suing for profit is fine, if you admit to it, but blaming some company for having a policy you disagree with is bullshit. Either don't go there, or don't buy their product if you don't like it. Most people can feel through the cup if the coffee is too hot. 7-11 has the same practice on the east coast. Maybe you should head over there, burn your crotch with some of their coffee and sue them.
Used to be a time when every family had a few dishes they did a "certain way" in the family and dating a girl who knew some unusual recipes was a treat indeed.
Same thing for a girl who knew how to sail (yep, no lie, I learned the basics from a woman, and damn proud of it too:) It is sad that so many people are no longer able to even stay alive WITHIN society, nevermind outside of it, without a lot of help and hand holding.
Plant seeds? Cut+sew leather to make moccasins? Sewing that favorite shirt back together? Orienteering while out hiking, because the GPS just failed and the cellphone is out of range? (Besides how many hikers call for help when lost?)
Its a set of empowering experiences that help you cement who you are and what you believe. There are many others, but self reliance is an important one, and very seldom even practiced, nevermind adopted as a mindset.
Speaking of which, when I lived in the big metropolitan center nearby, it was amazing to me how many GIRLS I dated which had NO idea how to cook! I understand that a large portion of American men have stopped being men anyways, but there used to be a time when men had some class and so did women. I mean, how hard is it to make a soup, or bake a cake? Or fillet/bake/spice fish? Yet we've all been completely brain damaged by the school and entertainment system. Those of us that escape, do so by our own mere resistance to outside control. I stopped dating when I found that I had to cook for THEM if we wanted a "romantic dinner" (or just a plain good one in a nice pleasant atmosphere that didn't cost 200.00 bucks).
Ever live on a farm? Kill a chicken? Kill a rabbit? Kill a pig? Kill a deer in the woods? Kill varmints in the field? The first one breaks your heart ONLY if you're young and have been watching Disney movies all your life. If you grew up on a farm, the first one says "food", and that's all there is to it.
Experienced killers don't get emotional... do the comparisons... ever kill a fly, or a mosquito? Did you get a rush?
Exactly the same point I'm making here... professionals who've been at it for a long time, plus a few deranged types, will be completely calm when they slit your throat, garrote you, snipe you, or kill you in some other method of their choosing.
Hunters that actually eat what they kill don't get as excited as city dwellers who kill for sport and then donate deer or waste them, some of whom haven't even seen a deer except the one that jumped in front of grandma's Buick.
Do I really have to explain the "j/k" in my post? I was adding a joke that killing is probably as foreign as sex to what I believe to be a vast number of slashdotters:)
Masturbation aside... do you think my criterion for a joke is inaccurate?
Thankfully, the professional who would really be trying to whack high end politicos and cops would not be a slashdotter like us, but a real trained killer (ironically these guys are usually government trained). He would make the chicks from Noir (anime) seem emotional. He would calmly blast the target, wrap up his gear and get out of town as quietly and unobserved as he slinked in.
The real "bad guys", the professional killers, the educated suicidal terrorists are individuals that aren't moved by fear or emotional rage... those things make them less effective, so they cannot possibly allow emotion into the picture.
These devices are aimed at a terrorized or rebellious populace at home, not abroad... (one will follow the other at some point, the people are only compressible so far before the spring tension results in blowback). I don't think I want to be NEAR a big city in the West afterwards.
I think your "dark ages" may well be referring exactly to what has transpired several times before in history. Sometimes I wonder if our ancestors hadn't already witnessed some technological revolution which went awry.
Ironically, it was the conformists that never left a "mark" upon the world... at least not as big as the nonconformists. American revolution... 5% nonconformists managed to pull off a successful rebellion with a little bit of outside help. Protestant revolution... christian nonconformists pulled that one off. The whole Jesus debacle... Jewish nonconformists pulled that one off. Mohammed, Ishmael, etc... eventually Islam... hmmm, more Jewish nonconformists...
Shall I go on? Exactly. Everything that happens that shocks the world is those nonconformists effecting change. Everything static, prosperous or plain boring, is those conformists "fitting in".
The original freeman was a slave who could afford three things... his own cloak (and clothing, thus freedom), home, and a weapon... and the home wasn't that important.
The career dad should remember that boys should go through scout camp and learn to shoot straight, kill and cook wild fauna and flora, know how to treat a woman... and learn to be a tough SOB (not necessarily rude, mind you, but tough definitely)... in good times and bad.
The worst that can happen is that you'll come out of it a man. The better prospects is that you'll develop the internal freedom necessary to strengthen the external one.
D.H. Lawrence once stated, "Men fight for liberty and win it with hard knocks. Their children, brought up easy, let it slip away again, poor fools. And their grandchildren are once more slaves."

Masterful... lacking inventivity as is typical of slashdot hostility. Guess the next step is a geek slapfight?

You should definitely be more upset about the contents of chicken nuggets and the restocking period on their mayonnaise. Oops, said too much :)
:) It is sad that so many people are no longer able to even stay alive WITHIN society, nevermind outside of it, without a lot of help and hand holding.
Same thing for a girl who knew how to sail (yep, no lie, I learned the basics from a woman, and damn proud of it too
Plant seeds?
I was adding a joke that killing is probably as foreign as sex to what I believe to be a vast number of slashdotters :)
