Yes. We'll be expecting results within a week. Send us a clear message.

No, not at all: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X11.app And this really isn't the first time that MS fucked up. Not by a long shot.

In that vein of thought, there are plenty of places to pick up Creative Commons music. You (not the parent) don't have to listen to the music that RIAA members are pushing. I'm personally loving JT Bruce's Dreamers' Paradox.

But it IS being used as Heinlein used it. i.e. "Grok" means to have a complete and utter understanding. Groklaw is the place where you go in order to increase your understanding of these events, for you to "grok" them, if you can.

  6. Re:again, seriously - so? on AMD's New DRM · · Score: 1

Because this is yet another instance in which the drive to restrict copying and improve DRM is hampering the use of the hardware for other, non-related purposes. It's a fairly established pattern now that whenever a new restriction comes along to "protect" content, something unrelated is taken as a casualty.

For the record, heads rolled after the data compromises of yesteryear and security has become the driving concern in its wake. (As well it should!) Even if incompetence abounded before, I should think that now that the university is the target of so much negative press, things will get much better year after year.

At least Copeland is fairly well managed from a tech standpoint. (That's the College of Business for non-OU readers.)

  9. Re:How much support do you need, honestly? on Steve Ballmer's Thoughts On Free Software · · Score: 1

And for them, whole companies exist solely to offer support (for a fee, of course). That is, after all, what Red Hat's business model is based around. Aside from these big players there are loads of smaller outfits willing to help for a fee. Failing that, I'm sure that a developer, if offered money, would be perfectly willing to turn consultant and fix the problem. Support exists. It's just a separate product and not bundled in. From a business perspective, this is great. The organization only needs to buy what support it requires.

  10. Wonderful opportunity on Making IT Visible to Management? · · Score: 1

Don't undermine your immediate superior. That's just a disaster waiting to happen. Instead, make it generally known to upper management that you're going above and beyond your current job description for the good of the company. Carefully avoid casting your immediate superior in a bad while you're doing it, instead focusing on yourself and how you're contributing to the company's bottom line and strategic objectives. Pretty soon, upper management should notice your contributions and promote you, perhaps into your boss's position.

  11. Be careful. (from a psych major) on Working with ADHD? · · Score: 1

Take care to thoroughly research any substances that you are considering as an alternative. The drugs that are prescribed have been through extensive testing to ensure that side-effects are minimal, and that the medication has significant effects upon what it is meant to treat. If you take something else, there is the good chance that it won't work, or if it does, then only negligibly, and/or that it will have harmful side-effects. Read up on something before taking it, and if you can't find very many articles on a given item in a PROFESSIONAL journal, don't take it. Also, if you are adverse to taking pills, you may wish to consider persuing Cognitive-Behavioral therapy. It has been shown to be at least as effective in the treatment of similar disorders, such as OCD, and I would not be surprised if it were effective with ADHD as well. The only catch is that you have to be willing to do it, and recognize that most of the effort is client-side. After all, you can only lead a horse to water....

  12. Re:umm.. on Paying for Volunteers? · · Score: 1

You could offer the $100/month as a prize to the most helpful person. That would get more effort coming out of more people for less. Of course, you would need to do something about the occasional belief that may arise that certain people can't compete.

  13. Genus? No. on Chimps Belong in Human Genus? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Creatures even more closely related to humans, actually our ancestors, are also classified in a seperate genus. The Australopithicines are our earliest ancestors following the divergence of chimps from our lineage. They, though closer, are in a seperate genus, so it makes little sense to classify chimps into the same genus as we are.
