  1. fiber to the house!!! on Building a Town-Wide LAN? · · Score: 2, Informative

    Specialization Fiber Optic Networks from 417 Megabits/sec - 1.6 Terabits/sec

[1.6 TB That means one reaaallly big pipe for lots of data to fly down]

By the way if they are looking for someone to run the network maintenance I am able to relocate!

Optical networking is generally used as a carrier for what ever type of digital data is being sent. For example say you have an Optical Carrier Signial uhhh lets say about an OC3 (3 T3's in optical format) All of the data that the OC3 is carrying is considered a payload; Electrical siginals like T3 to multiplexed with other peoples T3 (or 2 more from your facility). This would constitute a very basic and crude example of optical networking in the realm of todays technology.

For a clearer definition of this example go to a search engine and try SONET

First of all the logistics of spam etc. is an issue left to the individual. I would imagine that considering current Local Loop technologies, that the badnwidth to the home would be limited. This is easily done now with various types of high end optical routers (go dig through Cisco's web site if you can afford the time). Also see companies like Cox Communications (they use a cable network version of fiber to the neighborhood!) or any other Cable internet access carrier.

Second Many small cities around the US have went to Fiber-to-the-House. Not any more work than adding new copper to the same community (actually considerbly less).

3rd Hell YES bury the fiber and get it going on!!!!!

    Everyone will benefit.

Finally the fiber to the house would requrie an interface somewhere between your equipment and the Optical signal, since I am sure that there are not too many tv's and PC's in the hood that can accomodate a direct optical connection?

  2. Look at the Facts on Man Jailed for Selling Modchips · · Score: 1
This guy was hosting an FTP repository of Copywrited software CD images. That is what got his butt in trouble. The case sited the fact that not only was isonews selling modchips, but also hosted an ftp server filled with CD Images of games for the XBOX.

Can't openly host a piriating web server and sell the hardware to use those images.

I am not defending the DMCA (Digital Melinium Control Act) but you must realize that this individual could have been convicted under standard copywrite laws either way he was toast!

I work out of one office where I am billed for my printing costs to the Savin Copier @ $0.10 per page. Not too mention that it is Black and White. The guy that owns/leases the machine was too cheap to get colour!(I am a contractor with that company)

My other JOB well I work in the Kitchen, serve people their dinner. Not too much reason to print there eh!

By the way the kitchen job is where out of work Geeks go when there are no geek jobs to be had in your hood and your too broke to move to another location to hopefully get a geek job!

If there happens to be a Best Buy in your hood just buy a service plan with your printer. Keep taking it back and complain about it. Eventually they will give you a new one. This is what I do with the other heavily used household electronics. Then they will either repair it to your satisfaction or replace it with the new similar item.

Yes a good firewall appliance indeed, if you can attach a cd-rom, have a couple nic cards and a copy of Sentry Firewall CD. Would make a nice cheap little firewall that would be much more secure than those crappy little boxes sold for home use. ie; netgear, D-Link and Linksys. All for about the same price, maybe a little more but it is your setup then not theirs.

See the specs on the cd at www.sentryfirewall.com
