But far less crimes in Europe involves or ends up in shooting.

And I've actually looked up the web for some numbers to show up too, except I found way too many documents, clearly showing *both* trends.

Heck, this debate is just too passionate. Truth is, we just don't know for real how and how much crimes and guns and homeland security and soforth are related.

Anyway, I'd like to quote the actual source for your stats :
Warning: These statistics cannot be used as a basis for comparison between different countries. They do not take into account:
    • national differences in the legal definitions of punishable acts
    • the diversity of statistical methods used
    • changes which may occur during the reference period affecting the data collected.

AND, those stats are not limited to guncrimes.

I think you're right, and this point should be stressed out much more often.

One gotta wonder where does those estimation come from. Imagine if every business had the same twisted point of view over the world. The chiken industry would estimate billions $ of loss against the beef industry each day, pointing how unfair this is, and bitching around and stating that they certainly know better what's good for the people. And it's chicken, damnit.

Is there really a point in comparing those product ? Especially from performance point of view. I mean, Thunderbird is a light mail client, whereas mozilla is a browser/mail client/editor/... and Outlook is, well, a lot of thing really. We're using Outlook in the corporate environment, and I gotta say there's a lot of features pretty useful (calendar management, and all related tasks). Do you have that with thunderbird ? (seriously, I'm asking, never used it). I say that's cheap MS bashing. I've seen better around :)

By the way sentient i.e. "having a faculty, or faculties, of sensation and perception" is a rather low bar. There's a huge number of sentient creatures on Earth. If you're going for self aware, dolphins, gorillas, chimpanzees, elephants, dogs, and probably several other animals have demonstrated self-awareness.

Uh, I dunno for other species, but it has never been clearly established that dogs are actually self aware IIRC.

As for statistical consideration, no matter how small the chances are that there's another Earth somewhere, I believe the universe is definelty big enough to make those chances real.

And on a side note, this topic remember me of The Andromeda Strain, an early book of Crichton, definetly a page turner.
