    Fibers in a well-made cable that's been properly installed should not go dark unless the entire cable is damaged. I spent 3 years doing nothing but OTDR work and I seldom saw single fibers break; when they did, it was always due to improper installation. Folks do install lots of extra fiber because as additional capacity is needed, it's a pain to dig up streets. Depending on the location, the cost of the fiber cable itslef can sometimes be a fraction of the installation cost.

    Several FTTH transport systems sold in the U.S. do not require replacing coax for basic cable. This includes Optical Solutions Inc. and Wave7 Optics. Typically, a weatherproof box with weather-hardened electronics is mounted on the side of the house where the phone and cable service enter the house. The FTTH box will usually have a coax output, a telephone output and a Cat 5 cable Ethernet output.

    At a meeting in Provo this month of municipal utilities either already building FTTH networks or considering doing so, it was pointed out by more than one attendee that apartment building owners in fact became very interested in having their buildings wired with fiber first (before competing apartment complexes). This was once FTTH became a real offering in their area.
