  4. Re:3D-GUI on Ask Slashdot: Comparing the GUIs · · Score: 1

    That is true..
the 3D is added by the brain - the slight seperation on our faces of the eyes give the brain enough info to triangluate and calc the depth or distance away of objects. Pretty amazing seeing as we can calc the rought distance of an oncoming car only using extremely slight angles. A bit of old fashioned trigonometry using the distance between your pupils as a baseline will prove that the difference between 100m away and 200m away is a very small angle. Pretty powerful old brain we have.
You can create the impression of 3d as well by slowing down one image - like with the red and blue glasses or in the Imax theaters.
I really cant see the usefullness of navigating a 3d desktop because it sounds like too much brain work. I reckon you would be able to comprhend and solve more difficult real world problems easier ( - no need for isometric views now) but for most current computing applications 3d interfaces would confuse you i reckon.
2d is quicker as well - no depth means minimal travel to get to objects - so it is faster.
1d would be even faster as well i spose but has some spacial constraints that may be fatal to its usefullness.

for ICQ to work stably i had to play a bit with the firewall settings. Tweaking the timout value a fair bit and now it is quite stable - i used to go on and off line alot but now it works fine.

The only thing we havnt been able to work with is PPTP and VPN stuff - if anyone has a painless way to get it to work behind a firewall on redhat 6 that would be great. I also have a webserver on this NT box that would be nice if we had outside access.

  6. Office2000 - OL2K on Ask Slashdot: Open Source Calendaring · · Score: 2

From the OL2K MS support Article ID Q196484 :

Internet Free/Busy (IFB) is a feature of Microsoft Outlook that allows users to see when others are free or busy and thus to more efficiently schedule meetings. Internet Mail Only (IMO) users have the option to publish their free/busy information to a user-specified Uniform Resource Locator (URL) file server. One can share this URL file server with all users or limit it to a specific set of users.

An Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standard called iCal, is the basis for IFB. IFB uses a part of the iCal standard called iCalendar, an emerging standard for the format and storage of schedule information. iCalendar defines a structure for representing free-busy information in a standardized way.

    ___________________________________

I have been using OL2K for a while now (beta) and the internet free/busy info is pretty good. A bettere way to share information between distributed workers is the Net Folders feature.
Tis easy to just coordinate Calendaer, Contact and Notes info with my remote business partner, we can assign tasks to each other and every so often it automagically coordinates our contact, shared tasks and Calendar items. It is pretty useful, if there was a Linux equivalent that would rock, but i havnt heard of one.

  7. Some info from the paent itself on Audiohighway awarded patent on digital audio players · · Score: 1

The invention provides a device that is in part a digital replacement for an analog audio tape recorder. The device can record audio programming digitally and can play back audio programming, where such programming has been digitized and stored in data files using a variety of compression/decompression algorithms. Audio programming is stored digitally on a non-volatile medium, such as a hard drive, or in a flash EPROM, or other solid state non-volatile memory.

In contrast to such digital audio systems as Digital Audio Tape (DAT), the device herein uses a different storage medium, provides random access search ability, and stores information in accordance with various data compression algorithms. It contrast to such writeable audio storage devices as the Sony recordable mini-CD, the device herein uses a different storage medium, such as a hard drive, has intentionally limited audio bandwidth, i.e. it does not provide stereo full fidelity, and includes a novel integrated data communications protocol and data exchange port, including a modem, for automatic program material acquisition.

The invention provides two methods for a person using the device to obtain program material:

    Through a digital data storage cartridge, which is the digital equivalent of a tape cassette, and in one preferred embodiment of the invention is a removable cartridge;

Through an electronic data transfer from a variety of sources such as a cable TV broadcasting system having an appropriate data transmission system.

The device uniquely combines the remote data access capability resident in a personal computer with a set of tailored, streamlined control functions to simplify, automate, and render seamless the process of selecting audio program material; ordering the program material from a service; receiving acknowledgment of the order and receiving the program material via automatic download for storage in a hard drive; playback of the program material when and where the user desires, with fully streamlined control functions; and control of the user interface functionality on the keyboard through a setup mode of operation.
