I understand this was supposed to be funny...but the "pennies-per-hour" phrase is a popular misconception about the prevailing wages for software development jobs in India (not generalizing to China, since hardware development may be considered more blue collar work involving more physical labor than software development).
As far as the current wages for "IT" professionals in India go, they are among the top paid people in the white-collar industry. They can afford to live a lifestyle that may be at the very least considered as upper middle class in most societies.
When most Americans hear about "pennies-per-hour" salaries (which in itself is an exaggeration), software professionals are being exploited as "slave labor" in "sweat shops". This view couldn't be further from the truth.
The truth is that "IT" professionals are being paid princely salaries by Indian standards (similar to how it was during the boom in the Silicon Valley). The cost of living in India is *way* low compared to the US. For comparison, a loaf of bread costs about 10 Indian Rupees or about 25 US cents. A large pizza at Pizza Hut/Dominos would cost about 100-300 INR, which is about 2.00 to 6.00 US Dollars. A low-cost meal in an average fast-food type restaurant would run you about 25 INR or less than 1.00 USD.
That's about all I have to say in this rant. Comparing wages without taking in the cost of living into account is crazy, but I guess it's convenient to ignore making misinformed arguments against "outsourcing" (which the corporations are responsible for, btw and not Indians who're "stealing our jaabs") and dissing Indians for being ready to work at lower wages.
hen using your iCopulate at the campgrounds, always practice safety.
Surround your iCopulate (bought at ThinkGeek (TG is owned by OSTG, the parent company of Slashdot, so activate all conspiracy theories now)) with rocks to keep the fire from spreading. Be sure when
you're done with your iCopulateto put it out with a bucket of water and make
sure it has stopped smoking before you leave the area.
Remember what Smokey the Bear says. Only you can prevent your iCopulate from starting a forest fire.
1. The alarm clock rings, and an arm attached to the winder knocks over a CD case.
22. As the string breaks, a second cube suspended beneath the poster falls, opening out the paper for the finale.
Just as soon as I figure out how to make the second cube turn the alarm clock back by a few seconds.
That, and a way to make my neighbors not make a fuss about the infinitely looping racket.
GNOME and its apparent lack of interest on user feedback
GNOME seems to respond to my mouse gestures and keypresses pretty effectively.
Granted, I haven't been able to train it yet to respond to my thought signals and verbal commands, but I would hardly attribute it to GNOME's lack of interest to obey me.
pooping is good for you, because it gets rid of all the bad toxins from the body.
Sure, it feels awful while you're in there, suffocating in the ensuing stink. But sooner than you think, the job is done, the filth is flushed away into the drain, and you emerge from the bathroom...a better, improved you.
I'll listen to 1 whole Brittany Spears song for 5 cents. I'll drive around the block with my windows down playing one of Brittany's songs for 5 dollars.
It may sound like a strange question but people do actually eat penguins. In Antarctica there are research stations where scientists live for months or even years so for them having a penguin for dinner is much like us having a Sunday roast. From their experiences we have been told that they taste like duck and that they also have a high oil content, due to all the fish that they eat.
Guano miners also eat penguins whilst they are working near to Humboldt colonies; this however is bad news, as the Humboldt penguin is now a critically endangered species. Guano is old piles of penguin poo and it is mined for as it makes a good fertiliser, this practice is also detrimental to the wild Humboldt penguin population.
Clearly, these people are trying to undermine Linux by spreading the word that penguin meat is tasty and nutritious.
Lucovsky wrote positively about Amazon.com's model for delivering new software bits to its customers.
Yeah, I admire Amazon's FREE Super Saver Shipping (TM) model of delivery too. But I still prefer to use the Intarweb(TM) model for receiving my software bits.
A great read and strong comparison piece for anyone interested in DVR technology. Would love to see Ed or someone else expand on this piece and incorporate the current HDTV DirecTV TiVo, Comcast's Foundation box being rolled out in a pilot program in Washington State and MythTV.
I think "DVR Technology" is overrated...atleast to anyone who has a TV Tuner Card in the PC and a decent set of drivers and TV Tuner software (Hauppauge's WinTV for xawtv/bttv for Linux). I got a basic one for $20.00 and it does the job satisfactorily. If I'd more dough, I could've bought a higher end one for $60.00, with it's own remote control.
I have 180Gb of diskspace at my disposal, the ability to skip, timeshift, record, picture-in-picture, channel scan etc that most TiVo users gloat about, with the performance being limited only by my CPU/Graphics/RAM, all of which I'd rather update than buy a new TiVo/DVR device. And to those who hate watching TV on their monitor...that's where an S-Video cable comes in.
Some of the best days of my Software Engineering class were spent doing an Xtreme Programming assignment with a cute female chick as my partner.
We earnestly spent days with her looking over my shoulder while I showed off my l3tt c0ding skills.
She even thanked me for the 95 we got in that assignment.
Aah, eXtreme programming....the best software engineering methodology for geeks.

Long Answer: Yes.
Sorry to mess up your planet.
Appreciate their (the editors') special effort today though...had my bellyfool of laughs through the day.
Hope the whiny comment posters would STFU though. Lighten up folks.
(PS: posted this comment in last article, but a new story was posted by the time I hit submit).

"OMG they're eating Tux. You Bastards!"
And OMFG!!!1!! I deprived poor poor Richard Branson's dog of his diamond studded collar.
I feel so guilty.
