Mono/.NET isn't really a game development platform. the more likely scenario for cross-platform games is that 3D games would be written for OpenGL rather than DirectX.

Back in the days where DOS ruled for games people said the same thing about Windows - Windows isn't really a game development platform. Now look what has happened. I've got my bets on Managed DirectX (i.e. .NET game development) being the next *BEST* game development platform for the PC.

  2. Portland schools have no money on Introducing Linux to Joe Average · · Score: 2, Interesting

Don't get me wrong, I am definitely pro Linux and use it on a daily basis, but what this article fails to mention is that Portland public schools have no money. Portland has had to cancel all kinds of extracurricular programs, shorten the school year, layoff teachers, etc. Most of the sports programs require the players to purchase their own equipment (for example). The local economy is hurting big time. Portland and Oregon as a whole has had some of the highest unemployment in the nation in past months. So it makes me wonder if the big Linux push at some of the schools is really because they are so "anti Microsoft", etc. or it is out of desperation because they can't afford anything else. Don't forget, Microsoft is headquartered only 180 miles north of Portland and employs several thousand people. I have many friends that have moved up there to take jobs with them. A lot of the contract tech jobs you can find in Portland are for Microsoft. So I think this whole anti-Microsoft thing is blown way out of proportion by articles such as this. Just my two cents.

So are you comparing a commercial company, Nvidia, with an open source software project? Hmmm, I don't think that is a good comparison at all. Samba does not need to "tweak results" to get people to buy their product, it is free. I think the plain facts are that samba is faster.

"From a geeks perspective, hardware is, or rather should be, boring. Software is where it's at."

What?! You must not hang out with the same geeks that I do. Piecing toghether your own system with carefully selected components is very geeky. Buying a standard Compaq is not. I agree that software is just as important but the hardware makes all the difference in the world. Just take a look at games, which are about as cutting edge as it gets when it comes to software. Try playing Battlefield 1942 or Warcraft III, etc. on a Compaq and then go play it on your home brew system that you have built specifically for games and you tell me which one you get the most enjoyment of the software out of. Hardware is just as important, if not more so, then software.
