People care less and less to understand the inner working for any given tech. They just want it to work. That being said you also have to take into account the pillars... Good, fast, and cheap. Pick two. Our industry is very like that of the nursing industry. Yes we get paid, but the conditions are rarely healthy. When you treat peogle like a commodity and pay them to just make the magic boxes work you will get what you pay for.
Depending on the relative frame of reference the two ideas are neither mutually exclusive nor exactly identical. The are complementary parts of a whole.
Like light as a wave or light as particles. Depending on what standard you use to measure you will find the opposites are both true. The exclusion of one idea over the other as truth is a mistake. Both truths are equally true and complementary.
Thus opens the door to quantum computing.
I think your main objective is to in as simple terms as possible relay the costs to the company of NOT employing you. Compare your SLA/OLA with vendors. Find 3 that are as similar as possible and average the cost of their service. Figure down time cost to the company, response times of you versus a vendor etc.
Beyond that you might consider a weekly report that details your major expenditures of time. Use a ticketing type system or log all of your projects/time sinks. Detail everything you do that is more than a few minutes out of your day and present the reports weekly to management.
We all laugh at the people that cringe around a computer. After reading all these responses I see our community has it's own fears... Modifying an NDA is not alchemy, wizardry, or even hard. For the most part the HR geek will frown and refer to legal, who will say, "Yeah no biggie and actually make the change FOR you. I did that at the company I work for now. I mean a lawyer is always a smart investment, but don't get all bound up over it.
Instead of trying to genetically engineer them out of existance they ought to get with the California Windmill Co. Look what id did for their bird problem.
We have been using HelpSTAR for a couple of years. I have found it fairly simple and easy to tailor. It tracks problems and solutions and has either a client side or WEB entry. Also it will auto respod to users when you close tickets. The version we are on now tells you before you even look at the ticket if there are attachments.
Don't get me wrong it's not heaven, but support has been almost instantaneous as well.
The biggest difficulty is persuading your boss to buy into a Canadian company with Cayman bank accounts...
I haven't seen anything about the effect this would have on the Earths rotation. To continue with their analogy of a ball on a string, the weight moving OUT in the string slows the speed of rotation. Conversely, as a weight is brought closer to the Earth it would increase the speed of rotation. AND, if onle 1 elevator went up wouldn't it change the balance of the rotation?
