Also check out jedit. IIRC it has what you're looking for. Actually, I discovered it right after I bought BBEdit and was SO angry with myself. It's my editor of choice on Windows as well.
<div id="container"> <span class="headline">large verdana</span><br/> small verdana </div>
This is a simplistic example but it's easy to see the underlying principle of not having to specify the font twice. I would argue that because CSS allows us to nest divs and spans this way, it *does* permit inheritance.
Things like Firefox and Gaim are pretty well-done, but they aren't replacements for commercial software; they are replacements for shitty free software like Internet Explorer and AIM.
Internet Explorer is only "free" in the most ethereal sense. Unless you're on a Mac you've paid a hefty sum for the privelege of being able to run it. If you could replace the majority of your most useful applications with versions that run on other (free) operating systems, Microsoft's entire model becomes obsolete.
Besides, Firefox's success shouldn't be overlooked as an example of what COULD happen in a commercial area. It's an exercise in possibilities: Free, multi-platform open-source software with a fantastic GUI.
$10/hour is insane. i made $9/hour for that job... when i was a student, part-time intern. seriously... the people who are replying to your comment are not making fun of you, we are angry because you are getting SCREWED. when i told my contractor i'd like to make at least $10/hour for a full-time webdev position, he LAUGHED. $10/hour is not even a living wage. if you know php/mysql/asp, you should be making way more. WAY more.
Finally, scientific evidence. I can't even begin to count how many hours I've wasted having to stop typing to warm up my hands. I once had a job where the office was so cold that I spent every lunch hour sitting out in my car in the middle of summer, defrosting. I know it helps people stay awake, but if I'm too cold to work, what's the point?
At first I thought wow, Dean from Gilmore Girls would be the perfect Superman! Then I realized Roush plays Jess, the scrawny little New Joisey trailer trash. Bad call.

hey, my script doesn't crash either, and it's only one line! of course, the caveat is that it only displays GOOD tags about as well as IE, too...
unfortunately there's no magic way around a lifetime of cultural conditioning and lossy translation... my only suggestion is to make sure you let *them* close the conversation. if they really get it, they'll probably thank you and walk away. if they don't, they might just stand and look pensive. if you wait, they might ask for clarification. alternatively, just keep re-explaining until they close the conversation. explanations in a secondary language are not something to be rushed. they may not understand your explanation, or they may just be unfamiliar with a word or two. it's hard to tell sometimes.
another solution is to ask questions to reaffirm their understanding, as mentioned above.
disclaimer: sorry for referring to japanese people as "they" and generalizing:) i was the "they" when i studied over there though.
in japan, they say "i understand" (wakarimashita) constantly during conversation; the meaning is pretty much synonymous with "i am listening." this is called aizuchi and is required to show you are paying attention. it is why japanese people might make "hmm" and "ah" noises and nod a lot while you are speaking. it's just a custom of politeness.
unfortunately, i think it causes the expression to lose meaning to them when translated to english. they use it much more loosely.
I think Apple is doing an amazing thing here... they have to eat the cost of the entire logic board, which is no small repair (even if they are able to get them at cost). PLUS reimbursing for previous repairs... I'm not sure how that is going to work out, but lots of people on the Apple discussion boards and here have had the logic board replaced multiple times.
I couldn't afford the $400 fix, so I live in a world where black=green. Slashdot looks really nice with a luminescent green background, I must say. My website has a certain shade of gray that actually has gyrating green pixels. It's pretty psychadelic.
Unfortunately for me, I was an iBook early adopter and bought one of the first ones out (May 2001) and they are not covered. Neither are more recent iBooks exhibiting the same problems. If you own one of these machines, please call Apple at 1-800-275-2273 and ask to register a comment/complaint on this issue. You can also go to the discussion boards and add your voice.
And I agree, there is no way this topic shouldn't have made the front page. It's huge news. Luckily a friend noticed it on Yahoo and let me know, but isn't this what I read Slashdot for?!
