This reviewer failed to mention he was playing on the "Affluent Western" Shard. Often people in this Shard fail to realise there are other shards, and that in them there are fewer career advancement options, fewer options generally and gameplay is much less fun.
The admins created only a potentially fair system, the nature of the player created "nation-states" and trade has disadvantaged many players on the server.
Do the Western Shard players care? Doesn't really look like it when they deal weapons they have created to other shards, and despite some charity demand interest on loans that they have given the others which is greater than the amount they give in charity.
Some commentators have accused the West shard players of becoming TOO hardcore in their roleplaying in relation to "national security"- it is believed when Saddam learned of the invasion he said "Bloddy hell, this is only a game dudes.". Indeed many commentators have labeled recent actions as "just too unrealistic... as if the most powerful clan would become so paranoid and try and destory everything... IMO the america clan is abusing the game and not playing properly".
It is claimed the feared, loved, hated and ignored "America" clan has been going on regular bashings to gain experience and consolidate their powerful position.
Everyone is praying the admins will step in before the game comes to a premature end due to the antics of the "America" clan.
Some whisper of rebellion in the ranks of the Western shard.
No doubt it will be interesting to see how the game unfolds... just remember our accounts may be at stake.
It won't become a reality until they can build a site that delivers text/pictures that can survive a slashdotting.
Seriously, this technology occupies the same realm as Flash. Used by webdesigners who do not consider the fact that some people can not, and others will not, get broadband.
i.e. it will get used by entertainment companies selling entertainment to those audiences from which can can extract a fee - those rich enough. This technology has little or no bearing on useful information transfer to mass populations in the near future, and yes that is a political statement.
I also remember hearing about this ages ago related to mpeg-4, but more than this, audiio/visual material unlike text has no effective way of being scanned. Sure you might develop a language to label the content (and thus make is searchable) but being able to search material does not allow you to "skim-read" as it were. Text will never die because it is the least linear format we have available. It also argueably presents the most information with the least preproduction.
You won't see interactive video on the bleeding edge of news, because (like flash) no matter how much you refine the production process it will still take much longer to prepare information in that format.
That said, there are some interesting applications for more "static" information.
But you won't be hearing about them anymore due to the fact I have a patent pending on releasing news (periodical informational updates) on pending patents.
You will be hearing from a dentist (lawyer) shorty.
"First, OpenBSD is probably one of the LEAST innovative software projects. It has to be -- innovative means untested, which usually means insecure. Hardly appropriate for a system which strives for the ultimate in security."
And there you put your foot in it. OpenBSD IS innovative, amazing cryptographic things on hardware and software levels, memory access changes, why do you think DARPA was going to fund them until politics got in the way? You failed to rebutt any of his points about OpenBSD. And untested? Which OSS project not only fixes bugs as they arrise, but has people dedicated to auditing code currently used - looking for potential future security flaws. Which operating system has the least remote vulnerabilities over its history?
"Third, nobody wants "innovative" software, if innovative simply means "different"."
No, innovation is p2p, innovation is bittorrent, innovation is all the things that have sprung from OSS, and from open standards and from creative minds. I'd like to see you say "nobody wants 'innovative' software" in a job interview. People want new ways to connect, they want new ways to conserve/use resources - OSS offers these things. If you can't see that, or refuse to see that, there is little I can do. But I can tell you I will be modded higher, and so should "the teenage troll".
You have failed to make any point, you are the one trolling.
First of all a big fuck you to all the ignorant comments that failed to differentiate between the government of Egypt and the people of Egypt.
Yes they have a repressive system of government, but what the hell is slagging it off going to do? And it's not like we are free from governmental control, it is just (we think) we are freeER.
I'd liken our role to that of morpheus, there is little to no use is trash-talking the agents. We just have to move against them, through spreading a philosophy that promotes freedom.
But isn't that what the movie itself is doing? I don't know, the movie can be viewed in that way, sure. Another way to "read" the movie would be to see it as a huge American/Western wank that manages to dumb down and remove two ribs from philosophy so it can suck it's own dick. That's not philosophy, that's propaganda from a certain point of view. And you have to figure that into their reaction.
If you have had, from your perspective, your land stolen (or the land of your freinds) and the people who stole it are proped up by American funding and military hardware - and then a movie comes out that is virtually incomprehensible to your way of reading things... a movie which has loads of "saviour" imagery and talks about saving zion.... of course you are going to look harshly upon it.
We don't see much fundementalist islamic or arab nationalist movies or presentations in western democracies. What makes you think that the Matrix is any different, to them?
I am no condoning the ban, I am just saying there is a reason for it. And in our opposition to the said ban, the best course of action is not to slag people off. Sure, make your discontent known (don't go easy on them or ignore it)... but mindlessly slagging off governments AND the people does not construct anything: it only destroys.
Many of the responses here are so typical of the current dumbed down, two ribs removed, political climate that exists in the US. Be constructive, don't think you are better, because YOUR government is censoring things and applying rules and regulations to what you can and can't see - and to who owns the airwaves and who has access to government officials. We are very much under control, albeit a different form of control. This does not mean we are better - "only human".
No, it's not just SCO. I think all corporations that use legal action in such a sinister way are crap.
If you bring a suit against someone, and just make a whole heap of claims without backing it up you have damaged their business whether you win the case or not.
That, my freind, is shitty lawyer tricks peddled by most major corporations. This isn't entirely corporate v corporate - it's corporate v community because there is a community behind linux.
We all know how powerful linux is, so much so that even *if* the SCO code is in the linux kernerl that linux is still more powerful and functional than most OSs. So all the claims like "linux was the software equivelent of a bicycle", get people pissed of. And rightfully so.
And yes the CEO of SCO is a slimy fucking hoe. I don't care whether he is right, his method for pursuing it, and his rhetoric, stinks.
can't skip commercials? guess I'll have to skip buying their product.
time-shift would still let you fastforward through - just start watching your program 30mintues later so you have an ad buffer.
These days whenever I hear anything about macintosh I imagine a room full of BSD developers with wine saying - "prior to BSD involvement Apple operating systems were the software equivelent of a bicycle, muha, muhaha,,muhahahah"
They then toast to their sucess and the linux v SCO problems.
Or I could just have an over-active imagination.
