  1. Plural of Venus is Veneres, not Venera on Photos from the Surface of Venus · · Score: 1

The plural of Venus is Veneres, not Venera. Genus, generis is neuter, and thus has an -a ending for the nominative plural. Venus is not. Thus Venus follows the regular 3rd declension, and has a plural of Veneres.

All neuter plural nominatives in Latin end in -a. This is not the case for any other gender, if I remember correctly.

I believe that section 62 of Allen and Greenough's gives a full description of the declension of such nouns.

  2. Water? on DoCoMo Will Launch Fuel-Cell Mobile Phones By 2005 · · Score: 2, Interesting

The article here did not give very much technical information. What type of fuel cell is being used? Hydrogen? If so, what do they plan to do with the water created? Batteries in cell phones are nice because they don't create any waste products when used. I don't see how a cell phone would be able to use a fuel cell without it being very bulky - it would have to have space for the water, and space for the hydrogen. Furthermore, the user would have to remember to empty it.

  4. 6000 times faster!? on Fast TCP To Increase Speed Of File Transfers? · · Score: 1

When the researchers tested 10 Fast TCP systems together it boosted the speed to more than 6,000 times the capacity of the ordinary broadband links.

Does that mean that when absolutely no packets are ever dropped, and the computers are connected directly to each other, etc., that it will be 6000 times faster? This certainly sounds like an absurd number. I wouldn't think that error checking would cause so much of a delay. Does anyone have any comments on whether such a large increase is possible?

  5. Re:Pre-emptive strike on Violent Video Game Restriction Struck Down · · Score: 1

A minor is not really a person in the USA. For example, a minor is not considered capable of entering into a contract. Furthermore, I do not believe that a minor has freedom of speech either, since their speech can be restricted by their parents. When I tried to open a checking account at a bank, I was told that I could not do so because, due to my age, I was incompetent. In California, teenagers are not allowed to drive between 11pm and 5am (if I remember correctly). So in the end, censorship of anything for minors does not infringe upon the freedoms of any citizen.

  6. Re:iBook on What Kind Of Computer To Bring To College? · · Score: 1

A laptop would be best, yes, but if you are planning on using it for a while (ie more than a year), and in rather rough conditions, which might be the case at a university, I would not purchase an Ibook. I bought one for academic use a little over a year ago , and have had significant amounts of trouble with it:

    1) When put in a briefcase between books, the keyboard eventually creates marks on the screen which are difficult or impossible to remove.

    2) My hard drive went bad about 11 months after I started using my Ibook. This is probably from being frequently bumped, etc.

    3) The Ibook sometimes seems to have mysterious motherboard problems as well, such as beeping at random times, and emitting high-pitched, loud noises after being run for about one or two weeks.

Overall, the Ibook looks nice, and is a nice computer, but just isn't durable enough to use for a while. I am now looking at the laptops by Los Alamos Computers, which seem to be more durable, and seem have better support: Apple refuses to consider giving technical support, even for warranty support, without you first giving them a credit card number.

  7. Re:Laptops/PDAs/Cell Phones in checked baggage on Wireless Computing and Airplanes? · · Score: 1

Even without people stealing things from bags, handling of checked baggage seems to be abysmal - have you ever watched baggage handlers throwing baggage onto conveyer belts? If you check your laptop, you probably will end up with a broken screen even if it is still there.

If airlines will not allow people to bring fragile items with them, they need to handle baggage better.
