  1. Re:You miss the point on Asimov's "I, Robot" Gets Movie Treatment · · Score: 2, Interesting

Sorry, I just heard Bush on the TV and the way he pronounces it made me think it was spelled that way. My nibble on alternatives:

    • read more non-north american writing, esp. culture critique
    • watch some foreign films (acquire new perspectives)
    • complement techie reading with other kinds of lit (sociology, anthropology, philosophy)

I find these guys very interesting because they write about the intersections between culture and technology in a pretty through way. All their books are copyleft and available there in pdf format.

    What do you suggest?

You miss the point. Hollywood whore does not care. It commodifies race issues and converts them into money (asses in the seats). Commodification of "important" issues substract substance, converting them into objects for sale. Will Smith non-existent acting skillz will not help regular (i.e. non-movie-acting) people with racial issues.

At the same time, that warm feeling of wellness you get from watching your racially diverse actors on screen and thinking to yourself (we're making some real progress here with racial issues in Americuh) leads to complacency which leads to inaction towards really changing things in your country.

Will Smith is as trendy as untalented, as you may see in any of his movies. Now, if you say, Samuel Jackson, maybe Denzel Washington... different stroke.

Asimov does not make any mention of black characters in I Robot. Why does film-whore-house need to include a black character? Is it because of it's long-enduring concern of black people's representation in movies?

I think any discourse of pretended racial-equality is diluted (thus detrimental to the original cause) by this win-win positioning by a corporation whose clear intents is to get as many asses into the movie theather as possible. Read-up.

This here is definitely Nobel Prize material. Brilliant. Who else could she work for?

My current line of research and design follows from a simple observation: Most of what we do with our computers has to do with communication, and communication is about people, but if you look at our computers, people are hardly there. At best they're buried in alphabetical lists that are different in each application. By putting people first in the interface, we can provide an experience that better fits how we communicate. In a phrase, "It's about people, stupid."

  11. Re:The benefits of abolishing copyright on Music Industry Develops Centralized File-Sharing System · · Score: 1

I think that currently the important difference, in regards to copyright, between "physical" content media (e.g. dead tree flake binders or plastic-aluminum discs) and digitized content media (for example the medium used for the dissemination of this reply-content) is that content authors cannot as easily slow down the unauthorized dissemination on the latter.

Copyright law allows unauthorized copying of content without the consent of the author for what it deems "fair use" (i.e. copying of content for criticism, study, sharing (sharing your LOTR dead tree flake binder with a friend for instance)). Instruments like the DMCA (pdf), in this respect, threaten this provision thus making copyright law an even bigger absurdity than it currently is (pointing out flaws in an insecure DRM system becomes a felony.)

My opinion is that content producers are mere performers of acts of recombination (pdf) rather than the mythical creators consumer society (since the rise of the burgueois) make most believe. Freedom (as in cost) of access to these bits is imperative for the continued production of knowledge.

If you're interested in the technology-society-culture intersection, you might also be insterested in this content (copyleft pdf's):

Those who actually do some work on the biz know that this kind of reply is overly simplistic. A score and half of times the client simply does not want anything but Microsoft, period. It's a support issue.

Of course, you say: buy RedHat or SuSe + support. But who will offer 24/7 support for MySQL, Apache, JAVA JRE, etc. when the application's deployed?

At other times, Microsoft is the one to find the deal and offer it to you as a partner, no need to guess a Microsoft-based solution will be required. Unless of course, you're rich and don't need the business or you work on imaginary text-book solutions from your dorm.

    Peace.

  14. More detail please. on Can .NET Really Scale? · · Score: 1

    Hello Cliff.

Maybe you could offer more detail on the data volume, complexity of queries and overall complexity of the solution you're planning to offer. The .NET Framework (far, far from perfect) and MS SQL Server (far, far from perfect also) offer offer a wide variety of ways to enhance performance (in-memory caching, all depending on what you want to do. It's not the same to offer a single-one-parameter-off-a-single-field-web-servic e for consumption than to offer a plethora of web services sending over pre-processed serialized BLOBS on request.

Your client *might* be able to pull these off on his 20K budget. It will all depend on what he/she wants to move and how much you need to process it before you do.

    Tell us all about it.
