  1. Re:But will it work? on Planetside Beta Analysed As Release Approaches · · Score: 1

WWIIOline is FPS with a much smaller niche than Planetside will have, and despite the rocky start and initial skepticism, it's still going "strong".

With the marketing power of Sony, the resources for online development of Sony Online, and with Planetside's near-monopoly of the MMOFPS marketspace, it's hard to believe Planetisde will flounder.

Yes, the game borrows a lot from Tribes, but expands upon so much that the experience isn't at all the same. Putting the incredible graphics engine aside, the gameplay is simply amazing; with 3000 people on a server, you're never far from action. And unlike tribes, the map is persistant and territorial, so the player feels accomplishment when gaining ground in enemy territory. With this comes a greater sense of urgency and ferociousness in player defenses, making both sides of combat intense.

The game seems to be a mix of WWIIOnline in scope and tactics, and Tribes & Battlefield 1942 in gameplay. Oh, and I cannot stress this enough - if you don't use Voice over IP to play the game with squadmates, then you're throwing away at least 50 percent of the experience. :)

Personally I was disapponted with Tribes 2. It felt like I was playing Tribes 1 with a prettier environment... *shrug* but with Planetside beeing MM, it's able to deliver exactly where the other games couldn't.

Oh I'd like to note that this is the FIRST mainstream MMOG where gameplay isn't all about the ubiquitous leveling treadmill.

If you have a console I highly recommend check out GameFly which is like Netflix for games.
For 20 bucks a month you can rent all the games you want ( having 2 out at a time ) for any of the 3 consoles. It's a great way to weed through the over hyped crap that comes out. And if you happen to like the game you can keep it "out" indefinitely, or even purchase it and GameFly will mail you the box, manuals, etc.

Note that I really don't recommend GoVoJo. They have awful turnaround times and their site isn't quite as nice to navigate.

Although they're not exlusive to the Xbox, these games shine especially on the Xbox. NFL2k3 for the Xbox is un freakin' believable in terms of graphics and gameplay. Shines considerably brighter over my friend's Playstation 2 version.

Plus, the Xbox controller offers a better rumble experience, something key in a hard hitting football game.

  5. Re:Halo for PC on New Halo 2 Details · · Score: 1

It seems the when Bungie wrote Halo for the Xbox, they compiled-in the textures for each polygon for the levels.

When they started on the PC port they realized that the PC community (rightfully) wanted to Mod the heck out of the game, so they've had to rewrite a considerable amount of the engine to allow for the dynamics of user-created levels. Since it's a completely seperate company doing the port, the Port is progressing a bit slower than people would expect.

Honestly, I think a PC port of Halo is going to miss something considerable - the rumble effect of the X-Box controller which, being so large, throws your hands around when it wants to. There are so many events in Halo that 'cause various degrees of controller rumble that it's definitely going to take away from the game's immerision when played with a mouse.

Hopefully the user generated content will make up for this.

Well, there is a *bit* more to it. You have ot understand the range benefits of your weapons and those of your target, and position your range accordingly. Since you're flying around and about during combat, this *could* have been a challenge.

Unfortunately even *this* is oversimplified with the option of "Keep target at range x". Understandably the future technology of these space ships would take care of this for you, but it doesn't make for interesting gameplay.

I'm almost certain that every weapon that you mount on your ship has a full sphercial firing arc. Also your ship's shield and hull don't have sides, just an overall value. Both of elements remove any need for true tactical maneuvering that would have brought something new to MMORG combat.

Instead, it's the same old Evercrack "turn on attack" and sit back.

  7. More than I thought, but still tastes like cheese on Max Payne Live-Action Short Movie Completed · · Score: 3, Informative

Not too bad. Fight scene is better then you'd see on a Showtime 3:00am movie, can't really comment on the "acting" Its a short, so the fact that there's not much story to it isn't so bad. The music.. whatever. It was a short. Basically takes the element of Max Payne that was cool ( slow motion shoot out ) and makes a live action version of JUST that. I've put it on Kazaa, but I don't know how long I'll keep it there. Do a search for maxpaynehero.zip Grinn.

  8. Has anyone ever had an Adventure in this game? on EVE Online Beta Reviews · · Score: 1

I've been in the beta for a while, but I'm still can't quite get past this -

So you set up shop trading. What exactly do the people do with the stuff they buy from you? They either shoot something out in space, or mine something out in space?

It seems that the game still only has 2 ways to interact with the environment. On top of this is the promised free-roaming universe where players can do anything they want. This has boiled down to a universe where you're either (a) Mining (b) Killing something near space that's meant for mining or (c) facilitating better ways for players to do (a) or (b). I *could* also opt for (d) exploring, but nothing really differentiates one system from another except for color of the planets and stars, and the number of asteroid belts and stations.

Eve seems to have a lot of tools to let players gather into corporations, which is the mechanism to drive player driven interdependency and conflict. Cool. Nothing like a good ole fashioned syndicate war. The problem is that any mark that a corporation makes on the world is never fully protrayed within the game. There are no maps charting Corporation position and boundaries.

There's no lasting presence. Regardless if you're on on a station or in a ship miles away, communciation is still through this limiting chat client. It's hard to set up lasting relationships if it feels like the person you're talking to could be really anywhere.

Sure you can build stations, but they don't ALTER
the environment much; they're just pre-modeled giant hulks of metal that float out in another non-descript star system. No player driven style, no atmosphere.

Your character's presence within a station doesn't have any lasting context either. I don't really go into the offices of Corpation X to "Talk Turkey" about my cargo of medical supplies. Instead I dock and find the highest bidder within that station's market. This could be a player corp, might be an NPC corp, who knows? *shrug* I click "sell now" and that's it... That was my entire interaction with the corp. *wipes hands* Sure, that ore could help a player produce some new lasers... but I'll never know. As a miner, I never feel like I'm doing business with a *person*.

Off I go again into space
to mine or freight some more.

No poltical intrigue. No real adventures or subterfuge. Just me, a rock floating in space, some pirates, and a station interface that's a spreadsheet.

    *yawn*

Now I *so* want Eve to be a great game. Of all MMOG out there, this one has the most potential in breaking that god-forsaken, turn-based-combat, leveling treadmill, no player-skill game design that's been beating a dead horse for YEARS now. So please tell me, what part of the game am I missing?

Someone please tell a tale of an adventure they've had in Eve.

    Please,
    Grinn.
