Why would OEM x ship Red Hat on their box when the customer is: a) Probably not going to be swayed by the convenience factor, since convenience and ease-of-use ranks 47th or lower on a *nix user's priority list (or so the perception goes)
The main reason I would be swayed would be testing. It reassures me that a company would verify an OS runs on their systems. I know it is not perfect, but it is close. For the last system I ordered, I had to check around to make sure all the parts were supported by FreeBSD.
Actually, I had the bat actually kill the dragon I was in. He had carried him into the sword. The bat then takes the sword and leaves you inside a dead dragon. I can't recall exactly, but I think another dragon wanted to eat me from inside the other dragon. It was pretty gross.:)
And that damn bat would come and take the bridge. That was a fun game. It was more fun watching my brother run for his life from "catchup, mustard, and pickle relish".
I use either Netscape-4.73 or w3m-ssl. w3m is a necessity since Netscape (FreeBSD or BSDi versions) will die on slashdot without. It is that document.write("..." + tail + "..."); call that hurts the BSD versions of Netscape.
I must state that I have no problem with either free or non-free as long as it is Unix. I only use Wintendo at home for games.
As far as e-mail clients, Pine all the way. I love Pine but dislike Pico. For editors, I currently use vim, but most vi clones will do. Anything but Emacs!!! <-- Poor attempt at a flame war.:)
Motif still cannot be part of a free operating system, and combining or linking someone else's GPL-covered code with Motif is still a violation of the GPL except in very special circumstances.
I don't quite understand this quote from him. Why can't I link GPL'd software against Motif? Why am I not allowed this freedom?
Look for material that identifies a person or an entity.
Check.
The material identifies a person or entity.
Check.
Is any identified person dead?
Nope.
If material identifies a living person, is it:
Private individuals.
Would the material negatively influence a reasonable reader's opinion of the person or entity identified?
Looks like a & b.
If the material might reflect badly on character and/or harm reputation, would the harm be the result of:
Since I have not read his site, I can only guess from the article that it was several explicit statements.
Check one of the following defenses only if you are fairly certain it would apply.
Neither, unless he has proof.
No one could reasonably interpret the statement or image to be an assertion of actual fact about the person or entity.
His assertions sound like they may be viable. None were ludicrous.
The statement or image can be characterized as mere words of abuse, indicating dislike for the person or entity, but does not suggest any specific charge.
It might have shown dislike, but also contains specific charges.
The subject of the statement or image has given consent to or approved the material.
Nope.
I am sorry, but it looks like he has successfully committed libel.
I don't think we'll see Java open-sourced under the GPL anytime soon just because the Apache Software Foundation has a seat on the Executive Committee.
I think they would be more likely to ask for an Apache-style license.:) Now that would be sweet!
I like to play devil's advocate.:) Except for flex and ncurses.
I just hope that ncurses keeps the BSD-style license after the five year agreement to keep that license is up. If it stays with the current license, I can see it becoming standard on more OS's (of course I thought it would at least a couple of years ago).
given a choice between a license that is friendly to big companies and a license that is friendly to me, I'll go with option #2. That is the GPL,...
I just want to point out that the BSD license is friendly to big companies, small companies, GPL software, and you.
The rest of your trolling about competition?
His points about many different distributions of Linux are valid. The BSD's all share the same design in the sense of configurating the OS and placing files. This makes it much easier to design software for all BSD's at the same time.
Competition is good, but the Linux companies should have a little more cooperation in the layout of the system.
I just switched to FreeBSD last year from Linux. I first tried Linux when there was a 0.7? version--I think. I then used Linux from 0.99.14[a-z] (SLS distribution) on to Linux 2.2.12. I had to be careful during software installation since some software was designed for RedHat while my system more closely followed Debian and Slackware. I don't miss these problems a bit. 'make install' can be your friend too.
how all the 'religious' companies are little more than commercial entities.
ROFL. Uh...companies usually are commercial entities. They might be non-profit or profit, but they still are commercial.
BTW, being Catholic, I am always amused by atheists referring to anyone believing in any religion as "sheep". They usually call people names like this because they cannot justify their belief (!god) over another person's belief (god+). This upsets them.
What would you consider a retailer then?
From Merriam-Webster :
1. to sell in small quantities directly to the ultimate consumer
He did not specify major corporation. Has anyone asked Compaq? I know they have those test servers running many different OS's include FreeBSD.

BSDi offers systems with FreeBSD on them. BSDi or Linux are optional.
This all due to the acquisition of Telenet by BSDi.
Altruism is all very well, and many geeks will happily code for free, but would you like
...
to explain it to my landlord and my catfood supplier too ?
Forget about catfood supplier; try explaining it (or anything) to a cat:
"Sorry kitty. I am out of food for you."
Meow.
"Really. I have no money to buy you food."
Meow.
"Stop looking at me like that. It won't get you any food."
Meow. Meow.
"I said stop it!!! I was not able to make enough money to buy both of us food, so
you will just have to catch a mouse or something."
MEOW. MEOW. MEOW. MEOW. MEOW.
Never tried that. I must see if I can play it again with MAME or some other emulator.
It is funny how easily entertained I was when I was younger. Now I need AOK on my Wintendo to keep my interests on a game for a longer time.

He said combination. I think he meant Windows/QuickTime or MacOS/QuickTime.
I might give it a whirl. Thanks.

FreeBSD's Netscape dies because of some bug which is tickled by a 1x1 image in the JavaScript SlashDot uses.
Even 4.73 still dies on me. It is sad that Netscape won't compile an ELF version. Anyone know why they won't?
The audacity of some American institutions...
I don't think the U.S. has a monopoly on audacity. You should drop 'American' from that sentence.
Speaking as a Purdue Alumni, I thought it was to hire a few more vice presidents. ;)
I would use my real name, but the Alumni Association would be after me for money.

Most of the comments I read are based on a lack of facts.
Questions:
1) How was the individual being attacked? His site? His account?
2) How was the account suspended? IP traffic blocked at router? Account (as in shell) renamed?
3) How did they know which account was being attacked? If it was the whole ISP experiencing the DoS attack, how could they tell which account?
4) How long was it suspended? 3 seconds? 3 hours? 3 days?
5) Is there any reference to this?

No HOWTO's, but many resources do exist. Here are the resources for FreeBSD:

I believe you are one of only a few people who noticed that this was standard trademark law and not the UCITA.
I blame it on too much caffeine in their diets. It has made them edgy.

I personally use FreeBSD. I definitely agree: IP Filter is the way to go.
As far as jail, huh? I am unfamiliar with this. I assume this is different than the jail() function call. Correct?
