I've got clients that use Hyper-V to host their MS Server VMs. We have it so scheduled backups will backup the VMs and data nightly using the built in Windows Backup. While Backup Exec would be the prefered solution, it's really expensive (but so is data loss, but some people never listen)! Being that 350+GB worth of data gets transfered nightly, I'm hoping that dropping in a USB3 card along with complementary external drives will cut down on transfer time significantly.

eSATA sucks ass. Seriously. It works half the time, and they're not even hot-swapable in most cases (depends on the controller). Worst yet, you must boot your PC/Laptop with the drive attached before it will be recognized. I know this because I have Geologiest looking to get the fastest access to SEG Y data from removable storage. When possible, they prefer Firewire 800. Perhaps USB3 is now worth looking into. But sure hell, I'll never recommend eSATA. Eff that!

If you worked for a cable co such as TWC (I'm an ex-employee), this is nothing new. In-fighting between your local Cable Co and the broadcasters is an age old non-stop holy war. Both the providers and the conduit want a cut of the profit. The only thing new is that you guys on Slashdot are just now figuring this out. So the next time your sporting event gets blacked out, or your rates change, it's quite possible that your local Cable Co is passing the costs down to you along with other inflationary expenditures such as fuel and electricity.

  5. I support Blackberry's all the time. RIM has a great business model in how they cater to their corporate base users. Their OS however leaves much to be desired. 1. There's money to be made of a scarce resource.
    2. It cost money to upgrade equipment and implement IPv6.
    3. Because of #2, it no longer makes #1 reliant, and thus will not drive a higher profit margin.
    4. They'll double NAT home user accounts to free up IPv4, and charge extra for a real public IP.
    5. Implementing #4 causes havoc with P2P and other server-side applications. They want to download anyways, not upload.

In order for IPv6 to be rolled out, I fear the FCC will need to get involved (as with HDTV). And that's just for the US.

You *must* understand that there are two primary groups (with some shades of gray) in which people are poor.

    1. The disabled and/or politically and socially oppressed. These are the people that need help. These are the people that have the capacity to want the assistance to help them help themselves out of poverty and into prosperity. Public services and assistance provides where the free market does not. But when possible, the free market is a much more dynamic path to choose. Such examples include rural China and India. Oppression by the Chine government, and oppression by the social caste system of India culture.

    2. Those that have all the western assistance possible, but remain poor because of CULTURE. The culture of victim-hood, the culture of entitlements, the culture of anti-enlightenment. A culture that pro-actively seeks a rebellious lifestyle that's self-destructive to themselves and the people around them. A culture of being lazy. Such a culture wields a vast amount of political power and influence for what little effort is put into maintaining its perpetuity.

For reason #2, those people can rot in hell. In fact, they out-right piss me off and deserve to be poor. Good riddance. Bunch of parasites! They will NOT be getting any cake from me.

I'm sure they enjoy it based on their actions. Or should I say inaction in this case.

Oh, and if you truly feel sorry for the children, then why don't you confront their parents directly. They're a great deal of the problem holding back their potential. Unless you smash the family unit and take their kids away, you're not going to be pro-active about it. Only reactive.

I'm wondering what to replace my Radeon 3850 with. Is there anything newer that's faster and can run with a passive heatsink? I put an Accelero X1 heatsink on my 3850 and the temperatures are just fine. With all the recent cards though, it seems impossible to go silent with anything but liquid cooling, which would be a lot of work to install.

Most, if not all mid to high range cards require an external power source. With that kind of heat dissipation, active cooling is required. When you start looking into semi-mid to low range, they'll usually only need power from PCIe slot. At those levels, you can get away with passive cooling.

If you're serious about gaming and bleeding edge graphic technologies, unfortunatly silent isn't really an option from a stock video card. Modding will be required at those levels to keep them both cook and silent.

But before you go down that road, you might want enable V-Sync on all your games. This way, you still get that silky-smooth frame rate without processing graphics to infinity. Honestly, there's no need to do that unless your a benchmark queen. At most, you'll save 50 to 100 watts of unnecessary consumption, and thus less heat and noise being generated.
