The sad thing is that what really matters is gas prices right now. The sheeple go to the pump and get mad that gas is high and they will say the President/Congress/government under the current party is doing poorly. Gas prices go down a bit, approval ratings rise in accordance.
There is no 'logic' in these elections, it is akin to one big high school popularity contest and how people place the blame for their problems. ("I had to pay $100 to fill my Canyonero, I hate Bush!")
It is much easier to just buy the Compaq on sale at Best Buy rather than build your own computer too. Some people are willing to invest the time to get what they want, however.
Slow down there chief. I am fully aware of the effect that urban areas have on swaying the vote their way. Look at California. What is generally considered to be a solidly 'blue' state is geographically quite 'red', it is only the liberal urban areas which skew the results in favor of the left. This is why the electoral college is critical on a national scale, and last I heard it was the Dems crying about removing the electoral college when they lost the election in 2000 but kept repeating that it was 'stolen' because of the popular vote. Now we're supposed to believe that the Republicans have fabricated well over 100,000 votes in Ohio to 'rig' the election there.
The Democrats will be complaining about 'stolen' elections until they win one, apparently.
Companies set prices by margins. You pay X for your supply, mark it up Y% margin, and profit Z when you sell it. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that when the price of X goes through the roof, Y% stays the same (which it did in the oil business, margin was around 10% which is actually lower than many industries), then Z goes up as well.
People who complain about this are either ignorant or anti-capitalist. Just be honest about which one it is.
Exxon Mobil made record profits because of record oil prices. Their profit margin has stayed the same. This is a simple case of raw numbers. Exxon Mobil does not set the price of oil, OPEC and the free market do that. Speculators analyze factors (Katrina was but one of many) and set futures on the price they expect to pay. What would a hearing accomplish? To prove that Exxon Mobil's business strategy is exactly the same as it was in the 90s when gas was less than $1/gal and Exxon Mobile was losing money? Oil prices shot up, some refinery capacity was lost, etc, and thus the price of gasoline goes up. The supply and demand are stabilizing now and it's back under $2/gal in some parts of the country. Conspiracy theorists are disappointed I'm sure.
Here's a tidbit to chew on: The government profited more via gas taxes than Exxon Mobil did from their end. This is even more true in Europe where taxes drive the price several dollars per gallon higher.
Doesn't really help the Dems that they cry that the election was stolen every election year now. Especially given that there's at least as much conspiracy surrounding the Dems actively registering illegal immigrants to sway the vote in their direction.
I'm no fan of Bush, but this election stealing conspiracy is getting almost as tired as the 9/11 'inside job' stuff. Oops I probably sturred up the Slashdot believers.
Their lobbying efforts have pushed these laws while politicians and *most* Americans don't really know what's going on. The fact that most of these corporations develop heavily in countries like the US would make it appear that the country and not the corporations are the source, but don't be fooled.

If you have nothing to hide, then you have nothing to worry about!
Add that to the blacklist; I don't want to hear that music again!
That you enjoy living in a police state. Just don't be one of those people that pretends it's anything less than that.
Pssh, overtime? Try creating the whole thing in seven days and not getting paid!
You it?
Maybe this too far...

A Perl zealot calling PHP a 'hack-job'? Consider THAT source. ;)

"How do I install software on this?"
"./configure, make, make install"
"Hmm okay it gave me an error during the configure"
"Well duh you're missing a library, go install that"
"How do I install the library?"
"./configure, make, make install"

The left would ban it for both. See Tipper Gore.
