Well, in 1999 they got about 14 bil for the year but invested it in dot-coms and made a killing. Well, they started spending and spending thinking they had 500+ billion in the bank and before they knew it, the bubble burst and they were stuck with a shit load of bills and no way to cover the tab. Obviously embarrassed they bet it all on pets.com and toys.com, they tried to cover it up in hopes they could maybe make it back on the World Tour of Poker, but they quickly realized the 1 million dollar pot just wouldn't cut it. So here we are, 500+ billion in debt and not even a pack of Astronaut Ice Cream to show for it. And that sock puppet was so damn cool, you *knew* that stock had to be a winner.
Simply outsource the work to cheaper markets. I've heard China has really good aerospace engineers and programmers that will work at disproportional wages for the products market.
As long as these cable companies own the infrastructure of cables throughout Americas cities they will NEVER allow ANYONE to hook up and recieve reception for free.
I agree for the most part but cable companies could really benefit from this. If everyone has their signal coming through, at least for regular TV, then the cable company has automatic access to that persons TV and can use this access to send out free channels, such as shopping channels etc. where they will only profit. Charge for entertainment etc, but use this new power as provider of standard TV to also hook on profitable stations as well as previews of cable to entice people to order it and use it to rent movies. This is an opportunity I think any cable company would jump at. It would cost them next to none, and in fact could/would get government subsides to cover the cost of growing the network and hooking up cables to people who don't have them in their homes. I think this would be a win-win situation because tons of bandwidth (and bandwidth that is particularly good in that its frequencies propagate very well in urban environments) would be freed and cable companies would now be able to have access to everyone and provide them with movie rentals and all other types of media services they could profit from. They could even sell cable by the day to people at inflated prices, like $7.00 if nothing was on regular TV and this person really wanted to catch something and then eventually just start buying cable.
Perhaps we are getting to the stage where the whole allotment of bandwidth is reorganized to me more dynamic and more efficiently used. Maybe in the future, everything could use any bandwidth that is available by modulating everything into a code the receiver will be prompted to listen on. I know this technique is used in the military, sending data over a functional set of frequencies to make it harder to intercept and/or jam signals. But if the whole spectrum is used as well designed highway of communication, with each device made ready to apply this technique, then bandwidth can be partitioned as needed.
Obviously, this would be a huge undertaking and would take years of standardizing before the "switch is flipped" to start it, but the wireless needs of what's currently important could be more effectively used.
TV and such should eventually be sent through cable lines as this would free up a decent chunk of bandwidth. I understand not everyone has cable or even wants it, but it could be a "responsibility" of cable companies to send these signals through cable to anyone who wants it, for free, and as a benefit the cable company can easily offer free cable for a few days to people to try and get them hooked, etc. Or even through satellite, which of course uses bandwidth, but I digress.
I guess my whole point is, perhaps one day we can design a system that uses dynamic allocation of bandwidth and systems that benefit more from a wireless signal can get a priority. I have no idea on where to start with it, or even if it's feasible at all as I have limited knowledge of wireless communications beyond a typical networks class at a university, but maybe some advanced algorithms can be designed to make this work.
Whatever you do, don't eat the fish. I live by Lake Michigan, in Milwaukee, and I'm skeptical about even going swimming in that lake. Not that it looks too dirty, but you know the Mercury levels are still high and it is proven by all the dead fish that wash up on shore way too often. Smells bad too.
You have to be a stupid loser to commit crime, no matter what crime it is.
Actually, many smart people who would be considered winners are criminals. I'm not advocating crime, but many clever scams and conspiracys are put together by rather smart people who have found an angle and choose to exploit it for personal gain. Most crime is never caught and many types of crime are not priortized. Keep it non violant and discrete. coupled with a great plan, and you're on your way to brilliant thievry. You have to have respect for people that really could give a shit about the rules and find ways to make a living and then some by exploiting ill defined laws and policy. Wait, I hate lawers too.
Don't worry, Bush even said he was going to "catch" all these terrorists. I feel a lot better now, how about you?
Oh, and don't forget, these people being filled with rage also have childeren (many of them in many cases) that will witness all this so we can look forward to at least another 60 years of this fun! Yay!
"But, it is damned cold here though. Supposed to snow tonight, goddammit!"
I know what you mean. During winter here in Wisconsin, it's one thing when they say a cold stream is coming in, but when they say a cold stream is coming in from, eeek!, CANADA!!!, that's when all of a sudden that lame scarf your aunt gave you isn't so lame anymore.
Such as reminding the world, time and time again, that they should probably not trust the USA, just in case they were starting to trust the USA. So yes, they really do, do a lot for the world in this regard.
"I hope that you realize the cold can neither be created nor destroyed"
The have no regard for thermo dynamics in Canada, just so you know. In Canada, they can make things colder with their custom inverse molecular energy transfer machines. I've seen them.
To me, money is money. If I make 50K US and the equal is something like 35K (give or take a few K) then this leaves me with 50K to invest in other business, so I have more capital. Cost of living is one thing, to be sure, but it's not the only thing. So, after you factor out the cost of living, you are left with a sum that you can do what you want with, such as investing. So, if wages and cost of living are linear (lets say it takes 4/5 of your income to live), then I would be left with 10K US from working in the USA and 7K US while working in Canada, while doing the same job. So, in effect, you are more wealthy earning US dollars at US rates.
But, it's not like this is the only thing either. You could argue that it's worth 3K US to be able to travel safely and not have the stigma attached that you're American. I mean, who doesn't love Canaians? Wayne Gretzky was my idol growing up and who didn't watch "You Can't Do That On Television"!:)
In Canada, they don't really use computers. They only have one industry, well two if you want to seperate them, but those are creating snow and creating cold. You see, they just sit up there in their cold factories creating snow all day and then they turn on their giant fans and blow it into places like Wisconsin, etc. They take great pride in this however, because without them people like me might actually be able to walk around more than 4 months out of the year without being wrapped in 5 shirts, a coat, an under-coat, 3 hats, gloves with mittins over them, 5 pairs of socks, furry boots and 15 scarfs wrapped around my entire body. Hey Canada, thanks a lot!
You will probably make less and are paid in Canadian dollars, so that 60K a year isn't as nice as it sounds. You will also pay higher taxes. But, you also gain free health care as well and have more public facilitties. Also, you can take pride in the fact that your tax dollars don't go to humiliating and tortuing Iraqi POW's. Also, it's really, really, really cold in Canada. Hope you like Hockey! Keep in mind, your boss will still suck.
Well, Gehry actually made a building in Spain, an art museum in fact, that used Titanium when it was built, mainly because it was in the 1980's and Titanium was rather cheap at this moment when the decision was built. Maybe he is a one-trick pony but all his curves and lack of right angels have to be proven to be stable and up to code, which they are. This is no easy task designing like this. As for uniqueness, well, I can list over 1000 cities that don't have one of his buildings or anything that resembles one, so he was able to develop a concept and go with it. Are they expensive? Very. Are they unneeded? Perhaps, but so much is unneeded but art serves a purpose to make things beautiful, to make things human and to explore ideas that create results we would have never thought of. It's proof that there is not just one way to do something. Not everything needs to be a single function with a single result. We are not ants. We should embrace our ability to think differently, to try new things and to do things for the sake of doing them.
Architecture serves the public, but the only responsibility the architect really has to the people is that his design is safe, reliable, on budget and beautiful. The ones that can fulfill all 4 of these qualities are the great ones. Also, this building in particular was built using mainly private funds so the public actually has no say in anything about it except for it's safety and zoning considerations.
But alas, art is subjective and one persons masterpiece is anothers eye sore and with someone like Gehry I can see how many people could be turned off by his designs. then again, I'm sure he doesn't care as he's walking to the bank with a nice little check because he dared to be different and do something others haven't thought of or thought were too expensive or unneeded even.
Find me a Piccasso that doesn't contain complicated curves, lack or right angels and excessive paint.
it's function over form, which is a direct violation of both the history and the nature of MIT.
I think you meant form over function and that MIT has a history of putting function over form. Also, I would imagine that uses of the old building were considered when designing this one, as the article notes that the new building is rather modular, another one of MIT's principals I would imagine.
I guess my question to you is; do Gehry's building have a history of needing refactoring? Can you site any specific examples?
He's one of the great modern archetects and now the Boston area is blessed with another fabtastic looking building. They have a really cool I.M. Pei building around there as well I believe and now they just need a Calatrava.
Gehry is rather unique in his designs as you can probably see. Let's see if form and function are one with this building, heh. Gehry actually paved his kitchen with asphault, to get an idea of this mans madness/greatness.
Sorry to hurt your feelins modder, but it's the truth. It's how the medium operates. It's the "magic" of TV. My comment was in no way intended to start a fight, but simply express the way things work. Oh well, it's Slashdot....
Ok, here's how it works. If you're smart enough to get a pirate copy of Windows, you're smart enough to get the update the same way. Why would you go through Microsoft to get their updates if you "pirated" their software? Go through the regular sources, right? I'm actually supised MS doesn't install a "patch" on systems without a key that make the system unusable. Seems to me like a good way to keep users that don't pay on the edge to the point where some of them will break down and pay. Then again, that's why I use Linux. I thought this was a Linux based site anyways?...

People may become even more complacent about sex than they are now
If you're concerned about that, you must not be getting laid.
That had to be one of the passionate posts I've ever seen. Cheers, man.
Well, at least all the Slashdot trolls have a road map of their next location to troll up. Excuse me while I go incognito.
"Gee, I wonder if a Canadian's head comes off as easily as that of a citizen of the USA"
Probably, as I would assume a Canadian head is made of the same things as an Americans head.
"You could ask some Iraqis."
I'd actually prefer me head remain where it is.
"7 out of 150,000"
I bet that's accurate too. But hey, all is fair in love and war.
"Idiot..."
Brainiac...
"That's right, up here we don't use computers"
Duh, all you use is the tools in the cold/snow factory.
"The various auto plants up here are not automated, instead of robots we have sticks on strings"
You're mistaken, Canada soesn't have auto plants. Just cold/snow factories.
"Right..."
Right.
