I don't see any so-called 'orwellian possibilities' simply because there are none.
If you aren't capable of posting a fun, light geek article without artifically cramming some hysterical YRO slant into the copy, do us a favor and simply abstain.
Is Internet2 a separate network? Will Internet2 replace the current commercial Internet?
Internet2 is not a separate physical network and will not replace the Internet.
[emphasis mine]
So, for the purposes of building another alternative to the internet; internet two is VARY irrelevant.
Do I get paid if I spend all night thinking about how to build a better model, or implement a more efficient algorithm?
If you come in to work drowsy, wiped out, and only wanting to read/. because you spent the previous night doing some walter middy daydreaming, why should I pay you?
So you blame the people for finding easier and cheaper ways to get music and not the recording industry. I blame the people for the waste of bandwidth, when it is a corporate resource. I blame people for the loss of jobs, when they are due to declining profits -sometimes due to low productivity, other times due directly to the theft of intellectual property.
It is up to the employees to be responsible members of a productive workplace, or to stop being a drain on much needed resources.
Music is a resoure, an infinite one at that. Music does not get made without studio time, equipment, expertise and salaries. All of those, and the money that purchases them, are finite resources.
Just ask your wedding singer what he'd be willing to do unpaid and you'll quickly get my point.
Finding ways to get that music to everyone cheaper, faster, and with better quality means more. More? To whom? Not to the people who have made signifigant investment in the viability of an acts' career only to see that investment go up in smoke due to peer-to-peer pirating.
Where did you come up with this? Terrorists need music downloading networks to communicate? Anarchists? What do they have to do with music besides the fact that they will always be breaking some sort of law? Nothing to do with music; it's the technology I'm concerned with; as I outlined here
Downloading isn't a crime. Actually, it could be said that in light of recent legislation, it is, in fact, a crime. At least with regards to illegal IP and technologies (such as the DVD decryption flap a while back).
Question everything I question why so many intelligent people would have such a glaring blindspot just because the object being discussed is intangible. If I opened up a store where people brought me in copyrighted works to redistribute to other people -sometimes for a fee- (ala' new napster) how long would I stay in business?
The RIAA has numbers, but people are quick to dismiss them, just as they were too quick to dismiss my points under the heading of 'flamebait'.
Since you're reasonable, let me try to explain one of the more important points I was trying to make.
Because of illegal filesharing, decentralised technologies were developed. This was done with the theory that without a central hub (a central point of attack, if you will), the networks would be less vulnerable to being shut down.
And they're correct.
What scares me is the potential application of this. Given the open source nature of most of these projects, I can easily see al quaeda (sp?) getting ahold of this idea and having a distributed network of terror computers, all attempting to DOS the whitehouse while sharing tips and techniques on how to make bombs or realtime locations of illecit chemicals of [mass] distruction.
That is not a thought that makes *me* sleep any easier, I'll tell you that.

Your links are very educational for showing the pro-UN bias of the media; however they do nothing to support your original allegations I was making. Namely:
This wouldn't be the same 'news' channel that has so little journalistic integrity that they're currently whoring themselves out to the current administration as nothing more than an unofficially recognized propaganda ministry, would it?
In other words, you're alleging that Fox is an untrust worthy news agency. A 'propaganda ministry' you put it. You may have your opinion, if you so wish; but those links do nothing to support that specific allegation.
Their case was based on the idea that there was no specific law saying that the press had to tell the truth. Which is true, if you stop to think about it. There isn't such a law.
The court, regrettably, agreed with them.
Agreeing that there is no such law is a far different issue than arguing that they had lied, and to the best of my knowlege Journalistic ethics are not legally binding.
The truth is quite irrelevent to that case and its' outcome, as far as I am able to tell.
This is all hypothetical, of course, as I have no hard evidence that such a case took place. Again, it wasn't on CNN, and I believe I've made my opinion of indymedia quite clear.;)
Drained our corporate resources (bandwidth, lost productivity)
Drained BILLIONS of dollars out of our economy (not just the profits of the copyright holders, but also the profits of the distributors and the salary of the sales people as well, and this isn't even touching on the millions of jobs lost)
Caused the spawning of underground networks that are undoubtably being used by terrorists cells as well as anti-corporate music leeching anarchists.
How is it he can sleep knowing that is who he represents?
No small amount of people would consider setting slashdot.org to 127.0.0.1 to be fixing, not breaking things
And if you believe that doing eight hours worth of work for eight hours worth of pay is a "fast food" mentality, then look around at the economic prosperity that your mindset has gotten us.
Oh, wait, what's that? we're in a recession? Could it be because people didn't want to do the work they were paid for? [sarcasm]Nawwww.... [/sarcasm]
Quality, not quantity. Why force people to be there if it's not needed. This just reduces morale. I agree 110%. If they're not needed, they shouldn't be loitering around burning through the payroll.
Why not pay by job and get it done. Then, let the employees do what they want.
Ah, you mean the nerfgun dot-com attitude? Look at how well that went for reasons why we don't just wank around on the clock
Mandatory 8 hours a day starts to sound like a prison term.
Correct me if I'm wrong; but people don't get paid $15/hr in prison these days, do they?
My employees'/etc/hosts so that slashdot resolves to 127.0.0.1

Most of the times that I hear that attack being made, it's by people who are so caught up in their hatred of America that they cannot make a rational attack on our policies (policies such as giving financial and military aid to other countries -out of our own pockets, I might add!).
IMHO such attacks are little better than saying "I know you are but what am I".
You know... the 'news' channel that's been caught in repeated misstatements about the current US military action
No I don't know. To the best of my knowledge misstatements have not been made to be caught IN. and has in fact recently won a court case stating that there was nothing explicitly illegal about knowingly lying to their viewers?
The fact they won the case obviously would over ride any spacious allegations of 'lying'.
Again, I keep up on the news, but this story hasn't appeared on FOX, CNN or Slashdot, so I tend to doubt the varacity of it. I tend to highly doubt it.

Having a few more laws in place to manage the out of control scripting activities in place on the www is a long way from violating our countries ideals. lastly, there's the economic factor. Anyone who has watched the yo-yo that is the stock market over the last few quarters knows that stability is prerequisite for a functioning free market. and you cannot provide that stability without both laws, and the necessary (and sometimes necessarily covert) officers in place to enforce them.
I do agree with you, however. Homeland Security IS a joke; one that has the enemies of America in stitches...at your expense, and mine.
Without more resources (such as funding, equipment and legislation), we may find that homeland security has gone from being a joke to become a useless token gesture.
Quite likely we'll find that out by watching the muslim flag fly over the whitehouse!
Your attitude. Capone was highly amused and derisive about the tax laws that they finally managed to arrest him for, that's pretty well documented.
It's not the criminals who should give a damn; it's the officer who now has one more tool in his belt to use in the war on terror; and it's god fearing citizens such as you and I who get to feel a bit safe. quite a bit safer, in my opinion.
Unless 'ceren' was some geek's daughter, I think you should re-think the possibility that she did that 'gratis'. I think that is HIGHLY unlikely.
So, that being said BOTH M$ and BSD have to PAY women to associate themselves with their products. Maybe because women don't have penises to prove the size of? *shrugs*
I think that the only people this will effect are spammers, domian name squatters and terrorists. In other words, criminals and criminals. It's a well-known fact that such scripts are traded in the secret spammer forums (with the original purpose of finding open SMTP ports), and are later modified by domain name 'bounty hunters' to find unused IPs.
As much as I hate to say something good could come out of the whole DMCA debacle, if enforcing this patent can stop one piece of spam or one terrorist act, I have a hard time objecting!
