Can multiple computers access the same drives through this?
I work for one of the first companies that is implementing Oracle RAC (2 and 4 node systems) over iSCSI to a Network Appliance. I gotta tell you, it works great.
Because it takes time for the lawyers to prepare (read Cover Their A**) for something like this. I would bet this has been in the works for at least a month, maybe several, before this was announced.
Our shop is running 9i RAC. It's hard to set up, (for a newbie at clustering). Now that I have, it's pretty cool and quite stable. We've tested transparent failover a few times (once due to an instance failure) and nobody notices. Amazing.
In my opinion, it's worth the cost. We'll have to agree to disagree with open source solutions. For those that can't afford it, I suppose the alternative is the better solution.
How is this insightful? Ok, Mr. Engineer, let's see you make something like this work.
I have a sneaking suspicion that the engineers back in the Apollo days were brighter than most of us. They didn't dress very well, but they were otherwise pretty smart guys.

Nah, they'd be too heavy and pull the branches down...
